Dear Friends of Montini Catholic,

A few weeks ago we held our annual Spring Fling Benefit. Over 500 members of our school community were in attendance; all coming to the event knowing

that the primary focus of the Spring Fling is to raise funds for the academic and extracurricular programs of the school. Throughout the evening, I was truly moved by the enthusiasm and willingness to help that our guests displayed. It once again made me realize how blessed we are at Montini Catholic. For a school our size and age, the support and generosity shown to our students and faculty and staff is truly outstanding.

I know I continually ask all of you for support throughout the school year . These are still not great economic times but many of you still find a way to support our students and our academic and extracurricular programs through donations of time,

talents and treasures. So I wanted to use this opportunity to sincerely thank you, the members of the Montini Catholic school community, who found it in their heart to make a financial donation or provided time and their talents to help with an event, serve on a committee or promote Montini Catholic in the community.

The focus of this issue of Bronco Express is also to say thank you to all of you for your continual support and generosity to our school as well as to give you a glimpse of how learning, curriculum and instructional techniques will change and improve as we meet the needs of our present and future students. Without the support and generosity provided by many members of our school community, our future plans in utilizing technology in classroom instruction and realigning our curriculum to meet the Common Core standards would not be happening. Very simply, because of your help, support and generosity, we can dream and makes future plans to advance the Lasallian mission of education at Montini Catholic. And if you have not been involved

in supporting Montini Catholic, in some way or fashion, I ask that you consider the various ways that you can provide support to our school community. As our school programs grow in the future we also need future growth in our support system and donor base.

So, as we approach our 50th anniversary of education at Montini Catholic in the 2016-17 school year, we are excited about what classroom instruction and curriculum will look like at Montini Catholic in the very near future. But most importantly we want to once again say thank you for your support and generosity which has made it possible for us to dream and plan for the future.

All my best to you and your loved ones.

“May Jesus Live in Your Hearts...Forever.”

Sincerely,

James F. SegredoPresident

Did you know there are four easy ways for you to remember Montini Catholic High School,

as well as any other charitable non-profit with which you may have a relationship?

1. Specific Bequest-You can designate a certain amount of cash OR specific assets to Montini.

2. Residual Bequest-You can plan for Montini Catholic to receive all OR a portion of your estate after other specific bequests have been distributed.

3. Percentage Bequest-You can designate a certain percentage of your estate to go to Montini Catholic.

4. Contingent Bequest-Make Montini Catholic the recipient of a bequest IF others

name in your own will are NOT living at the time of your death.

No matter how you do decide to remember Montini Catholic High School, a gift from your own will accomplishes several key benefits:

A. It sends a strong message to your heirs that Montini Catholic played an important role in your life and the life of your own family.

B. It guarantees that your own generosity to Montini Catholic will continue even after you’re gone.

C. It does provide important support to Montini and its programs and services for its present students.

D.It does provide certain tax benefits to your heirs!

So, as you look ahead and plan, do speak with your lawyer and/or financial counselor about the BEST way for you to remember Montini Catholic High School in your own will.

AND, if you already have made such a provision for Montini Catholic High School in your estate plans, then please do let us know so we in turn can plan for long-term needs and provide you recognition now in our own Legacy Society. In order to learn more about how to create such a bequest, or any other estate-planning vehicle, please call: Brother Thomas Harding, fsc at 630-627-6930 ex # 179, or [email protected]. You may also want to visit www.montini.org and review our Support Montini page, and consult the tab, Planned Giving/Estate Plans.

Thank you!

Montini Catholic High School is proud to announce that Fine Arts Department Chairperson

Wanda Drabik has reached her 20th year at the school. She began her career at Montini Catholic in the 1993-1994 academic school year as the sole member of the art department. Over the past 2 decades she has witnessed changes in the Art Department and has now sustained a consistent offering in faculty and facilities for the better part of the past 10 years.

“When I started I was the only member of the Art department.”

“We now have myself and Mrs. Jen Voogd as full-time Art teachers, an array of fine art offerings (over 10 art-related classes), extracurricular activities, large & luxurious Art Studio classrooms, 8 display cases including our large gallery window that allow us to proudly

display student work to current students & parents as well as visitors and prospective families,” commented Mrs. Drabik.

Wanda Drabik holds a Bachelor’s of Science from Northern Illinois

University. She began her career in the arts as a freelance graphic artist in the city of Chicago. She then took a teaching job at St. Joan of Arc in Lisle and then Notre Dame Grade School in Clarendon Hills before coming to Montini Catholic. This past fall at the Montini Catholic fall fundraiser, Mrs. Drabik was part of the gallery exhibit

with her fine collection of hand-made jewelry. She is the Moderator for the school’s Baking Club and

she is also a parent of two Montini Catholic graduates - Steve ‘00 & Joanna ‘02. The entire Montini Catholic

community would like to congratulate Wanda Drabik on her 20th anniversary.

The Drama Department ushered in the Spring Season with its presentation of Anything Goes.

This year, over 45 Montini Catholic students from 15 cities and towns put on 5 performances from Thursday, March 7 - Sunday, March 11. With over 12 weeks of preparation, the culminating performance weekend was filled with nerves, excitement, laughs and of course - song & dance. With grandiose music numbers, tap-dancing, precise set design and stunning lighting arrangements, the performances were conducted in tremendous fashion, showcasing the dynamic range of all those who applied their creative energies to the production (above: Junior, Julia Luka - daughter of John Luka ‘81 plays Reno Sweeny).

MONTINI CATHOLIC MARCHES ON

On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, thirty-seven Montini Catholic High School students and three

theology teachers (Dr. Joseph Mordente, Mrs. Barbara Caruso and Ms. Joanna Spence) set forth on a 4-day pilgrimage to the Annual March for Life in Washington, DC. The students’ mission was to give a voice to the unborn and bear witness to what Catholics believe, while also exercising their constitutional rights as citizens to bring those beliefs into public space. The Montini group, the largest contingent in school history, prayed prior to every meal

and recited part of the Church’s official Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours each night before going to bed. Each and every year, people gather for this March up Constitution Avenue. The demonstration lasts three and a half hours from start to finish. The majority of the crowd was comprised of young people – both teenagers and young adults.

Under the guidance and direction of Campus Minister, Mr. Michael Blanchette and Mrs. Kelly Davis,

the Montini Catholic student body and community helped make the Easter season a little brighter for over 50 children throughout the Chicagoland Area. With the help of Catholic Charities and Children and Family Connection, the student body collected toys, candy and Easter baskets. Baskets were then assembled by students and faculty the week prior to spring break. Over 75% of the student body helped by providing donations.

In summer of 2011, Stefan Shover spent three weeks in Costa Rica to help renovate a town meeting

hall. This past summer he spent three weeks in Guatemala and helped renovate a school. He participated in these summer Service Learning projects through an organization called Walking Tree Travel. Stefan found out about this program through a former Montini Catholic Spanish Instructor Katie Laird who participated in the program as a student at Notre Dame University.

“The trips demonstrated the true value of what we deem significant or insignificant. For instance, there was never warm water to shower with in Costa Rica and in Guatemala, you couldn’t drink any of the water from the sink because it was not purified; so we drank bagged water,” said Stefan.

Stefan Shover is a high honor student from Downers Grove. He is a member of the Boys’ Lacrosse Team, Lasallian Youth, Chess Club, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

Funding the FUTURE

Transforming the 3 R’s into 3 E’s: Explore, Engage, Excel Montini Catholic was founded on the ideas and educational vision of St. John Baptist de la Salle, patron saint of educators. John Baptist charged the LaSallian institutions that follow in his footsteps with the task of touching hearts, building leaders, and transforming lives. Here at Montini Catholic, we have been living the mission since 1966. In anticipation of the 50th Anniversary of Montini Catholic, the introduction of the State wide Common Core Curriculum Standards, and the need to prepare students for career competency, civic responsibility and Christian spirit as John Baptist envisioned, Montini Catholic is moving forward with several initiatives that we’d like to tell everyone about.

By exploring new ways of teaching critical thinking, evaluating and assessing learning, and collaborating between departments, we will maximize how we engage and prepare our students for both college and the careers of the future, and enhance the potential of each student to excel.

In October 2012, President Jim Segredo invited two Board Members, alumni parent Ed Mack and graduate Dr. Janis Orlowski ’74, to lead the efforts in creating a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Alumni Advisory Council. What has been less

talked about externally, but just as immediate and important internally, are the two faculty committees that have been established to facilitate implementation of the Common Core Curriculum (CCC) and the Digital Learning Initiatives spearheaded by the Technology Advisory Committee (TAC). While students at Montini Catholic have consistently achieved a 98% college acceptance rate throughout the history of the school, the CCC is causing everyone to review and possibly rethink teaching methods, to better prepare our current students for a complex, connected, and globally interactive world. Critical thinking, information and technological literacy, collaboration, and a variety of assessment methods are meant to reinforce the content and skills focus of previous state and national standards.

TAC, which began meeting last April, has been mandated to consider how the current infrastructure, software, and hardware available at Montini Catholic might be enhanced to support the move to the Common Core Standards and how technology could further support the teaching that happens day in and day out here at Montini. From reviewing the bandwidth and access points, to investigating which tools would be best to put in the hands of students on a daily basis, TAC’s goal is to consistently provide the tools and training our teachers need to improve the educational experiences of the young men and women who walk through our doors.

We will keep you posted on these exciting developments at Montini Catholic via our electronic newsletters and the quarterly Bronco Express, but if any alumni, current or past parent, or friend of Montini Catholic would like more information or to get involved, please contact Jim Segredo at 630-627-6930 ext. 174 or Janet Cobb at ext. 187.

Academic HIGHLIGHTS

During a recent visit with an alumna from the Class of 2005, Director of Development Janet

Cobb discovered that the alum did not know the school hallways no longer have carpeting. So much as changed through the efforts of so many! Again, thank you and if you haven’t been on campus lately – please stop in for a visit to see the many great things happening.

The Fund-a-Need call for cash during the Spring Fling focused on continuing with Technology Integration which began with the SMARTBoards and Netbooks of previous years, and supports the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives we are proposing through the STEM Alumni Advisory Committee. We are excited to say that we have raised just over $26,000 thus far. Raising $40,000 this academic year would position us well for the coming 2013-2014 year as we continue to prepare students for career competency, civic responsibility, and the Christian Spirit. You can donate directly to Fund-a-Need by following the links at www.montini.org.

In addition to our STEM initiatives, other efforts of the development office include the formation of a Young

Alumni Advisory Board, establishing Giving Circles for the young alum to support and mentor current students, the development and launch of a Montini Catholic Mobile App for all the latest news and information, continued efforts to secure donations to pay-off the Duffy Memorial Stadium, and the annual appeal which supports every day operations like keeping the lights and heat on in the buildings while attempting to keep tuition as low as possible.

In an effort to get to know the Montini Catholic family a bit better, Janet Cobb will be reaching out to many of you asking to chat over breakfast, lunch, coffee; at your office or on campus. Please contact her directly if you can at 630-627-6930 ext. 187 or [email protected]

37 SENIORS NAMED ILLINOIS STATE SCHOLARS 37 Montini Catholic students have been recognized as 2013-14 Illinois State Scholars. The prestigious award, given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), recognized 18,863 high school students from across the state as this year’s State Scholars. Since 1979, over 582,000 Illinois students have been honored as State Scholars. Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors from 749 different high schools across the state. Selection

is based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. High school guidance counselors work in conjunction with ISAC to determine the winners.

“We are very proud of each of these students,” says Maryann O’Neill. “We are proud that approximately 23% of the class has been recognized.”

Senior Rebekah Ernat has been named a Finalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. As a junior,
