This year marks the 40th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. When the festival began in April 1970 it was known as the Louisiana Heritage Fair. Mahalia Jackson, often deemed as the greatest gospel singer, returned to her hometown of New Orleans to appear at the premier festival. Also in atten-dance was one of the most influ-ential jazz figures of all time, Duke Ellington. As Ellington and Jacks min-gled among the festival crowd, they came across the Eureka Brass Band as it marched through the festival grounds. George Wein, the festival producer, noticed the duo and handed Jackson a micro-phone. She began to sing along with the band and proceeded to join the parade. It was then that New Or-leans jazz and heritage collided and the spirit of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was born.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a 10-day cultural event. It is held each spring and welcomes more than 400,000 visitors every year. Held at the Fair Grounds Race Course, the festival features numerous musical talents, offers authentic New Orleans cuisine and showcases arts and crafts from the Cajun region and around the world.
