SciTech DiploHub, the Barcelona Science and Technology Diplomacy Hub, andIBEI, a leading academic and research institution on global affairs from Barcelona,have partnered to offer unique training on Science and Technology Diplomacy. Itwill train the next cohort of leaders of a field that is increasingly essential to tacklehumanity’s global challenges, which require effective multi-stakeholderpartnerships between the science and technology community and public andforeign policy practitioners.

Lectures are organized following 5 different themes:

• Introduction to Science Diplomacy

• Science Diplomacy in Europe

• Science Diplomacy in the Mediterranean Area

• Technology Diplomacy

• The role of Global Cities and Sustainable Development

This comprehensive, unique course in Science & Technology Diplomacy will takeplace 1st-5th July 2019 in one of world’s innovation hotspots: Barcelona. Withworld-class research institutions, facilities such as the BarcelonaSupercomputing Center, the ALBA Synchrotron or the National Genome AnalysisCenter, the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean, the UN-HABITATCity Resilience Profiling Programme (UN-HABITAT/CRPP) and United Cities andLocal Governments (UCLG), Barcelona is among the top innovation hubsworldwide, the 3rd non-capital city in consular representation and one of theleading cities in global municipalism. The ideal place for science and technologydiplomacy.

BARCELONA: A HOTSPOT FOR SCIENCE AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS

WHO WILL ATTENDAimed at mid-career scientists, technology experts, diplomats and professionalsin international relations and public policy, the Summer School covers the mostpressing issues on Science and Technology Diplomacy.

Participants should have a graduate degree in any branch of science,technology, engineering, international affairs, public policy or politicalscience. Ideally participants will have at least 3 years of related workexperience in research, international organizations or project management.

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe school combines academics with professional development and soft skillsactivities and on-the-field lectures to learn from Science Diplomacy projects first-hand.

CAPSTONE PROJECT AND SOFT SKILLS / Put all your knowledge intopractice with a capstone project. The capstone project, together with softskills training -science communication sessions-, will make participants applytheir knowledge to developing Science Diplomacy projects for their career.

VISITS AND NETWORKING / Visit world-class institutions based inBarcelona and network with Science Diplomacy practitioners. Visitsinclude the Union for the Mediterranean and the Barcelona SupercomputingCenter, among others. In an exclusive event at Gaudi’s La Pedrera, you will beable to meet diplomats and science diplomacy practitioners from Barcelonaand the world.

1/ ONLINE PLARFORM / Start meeting other participants and acquiringintroductory knowledge to Science Diplomacy. The online platform mayinclude interesting lectures and guidelines for the school.

LECTURES / Dig into the emerging concepts surrounding sciencediplomacy. Lectures will be organized in different modules, coveringEuropean and Mediterranean issues, as well as the impact of technology,sustainable development and global cities in global governance.

TUITION / The full School fee is 800 euros, covering application, tuition, visits,

welcome dinner and other activities. Accommodation, visa, airfare and any other items

not specifically mentioned are not included in the program fees.

research coordinator, the following documents: curriculum vitae, motivation letter and

a recommendation letter (only in case to apply for scholarships).

SCHOLARSHIPS / A number of scholarships to cover full or half course fees are

available. In addition to the application requirements, to apply for a scholarship,

interested persons must send to IBEI before 15th May 2019 a recommendation letter.

Scholarships will be communicated before 15st June.

FINAL DEADLINE / Interested candidates should apply before 15th June.

ABOUT US

The School is a joint initiative by the pioneer organization SciTech DiploHub, first city-based science and technology diplomacy strategy in the world, and a world-

class graduate school on international affairs, the IBEI-Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals. This Summer School is a non-profit project. All fees will be

used to cover the school expenses and fund scholarships for those interested but unable to afford it.

SciTech DiploHub, the Barcelona Science and Technology Diplomacy Hub, is the nonprofit public-

private partnership in charge of implementing Barcelona’s science diplomacy strategy. Backed by

Barcelona’s research centers, universities, non-profits, corporations, startups and public institutions,

SciTech DiploHub has the global mandate to make Barcelona an influential global player through

science, technology and innovation and its contribution to tackling humanity’s greatest challenges.

IBEI is an inter-university institute created in 2004 as a joint effort of all five public universities in the

Barcelona metropolitan area and CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) to

promote training and research in politics and international relations and global challenges. It has

become a consolidated and highly recognized academic and research center at both European and

international level.
