The Neuro-intensive Critical Care UnitThis inpatient unit provides special care for patients withneurological and neurosurgicaldisorders. Once the patient’scondition has been stabilized, thephysician teams meet daily to furtherevaluate the diagnosis, management,rehabilitation and prognosis. Nursespecialists, trained in neuro-patientmanagement, provide assistance for patients and their loved onesthrough the entire process ofrecovery.

MEGMagnetoencephalography allows for mapping of brain activity, whichhas many diagnostic and treatmentindications. Patients with epilepsy,arteriovenous malformations orbrain lesions stand to benefit fromthis technology. There are just a fewdozen MEGs currently in the UnitedStates, and Saint Louis UniversityHospital has the only one in a 200-mile radius.

Vagal nerve stimulationSLUCare psychiatrists at Saint LouisUniversity Hospital have beeninvolved in the research anddevelopment of this innovativetherapy for treatment-resistantdepression. A vagal nerve stimulatoris implanted under the collar boneand has leads that run to the vagalnerve in the neck. The device emitselectrical pulses to stimulate thebrain. It has been used for and isFDA-approved to treat epilepsy,as well.

Intraoperative MRIIntraoperative MRI (iMRI), usedduring brain surgery, allowsneurosurgeons to take a completescan of the brain during a procedure.This imaging usually takes placeafter a patient’s surgery is“completed,”to determine whetherall of a tumor was successfullyremoved, or to see if any other braintissue appears abnormal. By allowingthe surgeon to scan the brain whilestill in the operating room, thechance that an entire tumor isremoved increases, helping improvepatient outcomes. This technology isavailable in the St. Louis region onlyat Saint Louis University Hospital.

Angiography suite A third angiography suite at SLU Hospital includes the latesttechnology specifically designed to combine the lowest possibleradiation dose with a high imagingquality for patients with vascularproblems of the brain andsurrounding tissues. The systemoffers sophisticated imagingcapabilities, allowing the physicianto provide faster, more accuratediagnoses. A further benefit of thenew system is its soft-tissue imagingcapability based on the latestinnovation for C-arm angiographysystems. This enables physicians toperform angiographic computedtomography during the procedure.

64-Slice “Time of Flight”Phillips PET/CTSaint Louis University Hospital isone of only two Beta sites in theUnited States for this diagnosticequipment, making it the onlyhospital in a 500-mile radius to own and operate this powerfuldiagnostic technology. By combiningcomputed tomography (CT) andpositron emission tomography, aPT/CT scanner gives physicians away to accurately merge two distinctradiologic images into one image ofa patient’s entire body. This allowsfor greater diagnostic accuracy than is possible with eithertechnology alone.

CyberKnifeSLU Hospital has the onlyCyberKnife in the St. Louis region.The technology applies pinpointradiation to malignant and benignbrain tumors and vascularmalformations. At SLU Hospital,it also is used to treat extracranialtumors and lesions of the spine,lung, liver, prostate and pancreas.Patients have benefited from thesystem’s precision and flexibility,as well as the ease and comfort ofthe treatment process compared to similar modalities.
