town, town of Salento, and we could link it with many other adjectives. Situated 15 km away from Brindisi, along the ancient Via Appia, Mesagne

is one of the biggest and most populated towns of Salento. Il nome "Mesagne" indica la posizione strategica della città situata a metà strada tra Oria, uno dei

maggiori centri del Salento del XV secolo, e Brindisi, unica via di comunicazione marittima dell'epoca.

Conosciuta come centro messapico, la cittadina fiorisce realmente tra il 1500 e il 1600 grazie a feudatari, nobili e clero. La caratteristica di questa città è che all'epoca era circondata da mura e vi si poteva accedere tramite due porte, "Porta Grande" detta anche "Porta Napoli" e "Porta Piccola", a cui successivamente fu aggiunta una terza porta, che prese il nome di "Porta Nuova".

The name “Mesagne” shows the strategic position of the town situated between Oria, one of the

major centres of Salento during the XVth century, and Brindisi, the only mean of maritime communication of the

time. Known as a messapic centre, the small town actually flourishes between 1500 and 1600 thanks to feudal lords, nobles and clergy. The characteristic of this town is the fact that, at the time, it was surrounded by walls and it was accessible by means of two gates, “Porta Grande” also called “Porta Napoli” and “Porta Piccola”, to whom a third gate, called “Porta Nuova”, was added later.Mesagne knew the post-unitarian brigandage, too;

Anche Mesagne ha conosciuto il brigantaggio post-unitario, ne sono testimonianza le numerose masserie dove i briganti trovavano ricovero. Passeggiando per il centro storico, è possibile ritrovare tracce di quel periodo: ad esempio, simbolo di Piazza Criscuolo è la mano che mantiene una croce stretta in un pugno che veniva utilizzata per appendere le teste dei briganti catturati e condannati a morte.

Walking along the old town, it is possible to find some tracks of that time: for example, the icon of Piazza Criscuolo is the hand that holds tight a cross in a fist, which was used to hang the brigands’ heads, caught and sentenced to death.

Mesagne è conosciuta anche come la “città delle 50 chiese”, nome attribuitole per le

numerose chiese presenti, simbolo di una forte religiosità.Nel cuore dell’antica città, sorge imponente la chiesa matrice, dedicata a tutti i Santi. Questo prestigioso pezzo di storia mesagnese è un autentico gioiello barocco che si ispira alla raffinatezza dei dettagli e delle forme architettoniche dell’esperienza leccese. Essa venne edificata su un’altra chiesa bizantina dedicata a San Nicola Vetere e a testimonianza di questo è rimasta la signorile cripta posta al di sotto dell’altare maggiore. A seguito del terremoto avvenuto nel 1743, la chiesa matrice subì seri danni. Una leggenda popolare narra che, proprio durante il terremoto, la punta del campanile si congiunse, per opera della Vergine del Carmelo protettrice della città, con la punta dell’orologio posto sulla biblioteca comunale di fronte alla chiesa e questo fenomeno salvò la cittadina dal crollo totale del centro storico.All’esterno delle antiche mura difensive della città sorgono altri importanti edifici religiosi, meta di numerosi pellegrinaggi provenienti da tutto il mondo. Tra i più importanti possiamo citare la Chiesa di Materdomini che dona alla cittadina l’imponente cupola diventata quasi un simbolo, la Chiesa del Carmine sorta sull’ex convento dei frati carmelitani, attualmente riconosciuta dal Vaticano come Basilica Minore, la Chiesa dell’Immacolata dove i mesagnesi pregavano e supplicavano la Vergine affinché proteggesse la città in tempo di terremoti e castighi divini, ed ancora la Chiesa di Santa Maria in Betlemme, San Giuseppe artigiano, San Pio e numerose chiesette sconsacrate, nonché un ex convento diventato carcere e utilizzato attualmente come centro per la ricerca medica.

Mesagne is also known as the “town of the 50 churches”, name given because of the

numerous present churches, symbol of a strong religiousness.In the heart of the old town, the Mother Church rises impressive, dedicated to all Saints.This prestigious bit of history of Mesagne is an authentic baroque jewel, inspired by the refinement of details and architectural shapes of the experience of Lecce. It was built on another byzantine church devoted to San Nicola Vetere and its proof is the refined crypt placed below the high altar. After the earthquake of 1743, the Mother Church suffered serious damages. A popular myth tells that, during the earthquake, the bell tower top joined the clock top of the town library opposite the church, thanks to the Vergine of Carmelo, patron of the town and this phenomenon saved the small town from the total collapse of the old town.On the outside of the ancient defensive walls of the town, some other important religious buildings rise, destination of numerous pilgrimages from all the world. Among the most important ones, we can cite the Materdomini Church which gives the impressive dome to the small town, nearly a symbol, the Carmine Church risen on the ex monastery of the carmelite monks, currently recognized by the Vatican as Minor Basilica, the Immacolata Church where the city dwellers prayed and implored the Virgin in order to protect the town from the earthquakes and the divine punishments, and the churches of Santa Maria in Betlemme, San Giuseppe Artigiano, San Pio and some other little deconsecrated churches, as well as an ex monastery become a prison and used at the moment as the centre for the medical research.

Almost 4000 hectares of olive trees cover

our countrysides. From the fruit of these trees springs the most vintage oil that is appreciated all around the world for its colour and its intense and strong taste. Thanks to our “green gold”, lots of awards were received, among which the DOP “Terra d’Otranto” certificate and the award of Gran Menzione during the Vinitaly 2011 received by some olive growers of Mesagne for the fruity and light extra virgin

olive oil.

Quando si parla di vino, Mesagne è al primo

posto per la produzione di negramaro e malvasia, vini rossi corposi e strutturati. Due vini, questi, i quali si contendono la scena con il famoso primitivo, prodotto anche nelle nostre campagne ma in minore quantità. Utilizzati come accompagnamento a carni rosse, il negramaro e la malvasia deliziano il palato sia dei migliori intenditori sia di coloro che il vino lo gustano per passione.

When we talk about wine, Mesagne is in the first

place for the production of negramaro and malvasia, full-bodied and structured red wines. These two kinds

of wine are in competition with the well-known primitivo, produced in our countrysides but in a smaller quantity. Used with red meats, negramaro and malvasia delight the palate of the best experts and of those who enjoy the wine just for passion.

Diventato, ormai il simbolo dell’agricoltura della

città, il carciofo non solo viene coltivato a Mesagne, ma viene anche lavorato ed esportato, come prodotto finito, in tutta la penisola. Anche il carciofo ha ricevuto numerose riconoscenze tra cui il riconoscimento europeo IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) che ha permesso l’ascesa di questo prodotto diventato in poco tempo il centro focale dell’economia agricola mesagnese.

Become the symbol of the agriculture of the

town, the artichoke is not just cultivated in Mesagne, but it is also worked and exported, as a finished product, in all the peninsula. The artichoke, too, received lots of awards among which the european award IGP (Geographic Protected Indication) which let the climb of this product, become in little time, the main centre of the agricultural economy of Mesagne.

Oltre ad essere esportati al naturale, senza lavorazioni, le aziende locali si sono specializzate anche nella creazione di confetture e prodotti inscatolati che si fanno spazio attraverso i colossi agricoli quali vino, olio e carciofo ottenendo non pochi apprezzamenti.

of support of the economy of Mesagne, in the small town there has been the development of the food and agriculture industry, specialized in the working of raw materials including the artichoke and some kinds of fruit and vegetables. associata a giovani promesse dello sport, sia in ambito nazionale che internazionale. Il basket mesagnese è riusciuto a raggiungere grandi livelli puntando sempre più sulla forza della scuola basket capace di temprare possibili campioni. Sulla stessa scia ci sono stati lo sviluppo del volley, soprattutto quello femminile, e del tennis. Grande orgoglio hanno portato i giovani del Taekwondo con la loro partecipazione alle Olimpiadi. Tanti sono ancora gli sport che vengono praticati e che presto daranno alla città nuove soddisfazioni.

As in the industrial, in the business and in the research fields, the excellence in Mesagne

is often associated to the promising young sportsmen or sportswomen both in the national and international area. The basketball team of the town has been able to achieve high levels counting, more and more, on the strength of the basketball school, able to toughen some possible champions. On the same wave, there has been the development of volleyball, in particular the women’s one, and that of tennis. The young of Taekwondo have brought great pride with their participation to the Olympics. There are many sports that are played and that will give new satisfactions to the town early.
