Bagnaia is in the very heart of Tuscany, few steps from Siena, Florence and the Mediterranean sea.

The most recent history of La Bagnaia started on March 11th 1445, when Mr. Jacopo di Galgano Bichi purchased the land and the village Bagnaia for 1200

florins. He built the Villa there and did a lot of efforts for the artistic and economic re-birth of this place, making the agriculture vocation of the village

slowly come back to life.

The Bagnaia village dates back to the 13th century when it was a relevant agricultural compound and the country residence of the Bonico family.

In the first year of the 13th century Bico Bonico was among the government leaders of Siena, and one of his descendants, the merchant Guccio, filled very

important posts during the very first years of the 14th century – the golden period for Siena, when the town acquired the beautiful appearance we all still

admire today. It was probably Guccio, a member of the political group know as “Nove” (the Nine), who ensured the definitive fortune to his family, as he

remained member of the Siena government longer than anyone else.

The nearby older villages of Filletta and Frontignano contributed with their beauties:

Filetta – a famous thermal centre – is well-known also for being the favourite thermal place of Emperor Arrigo VII and Frontignano is a fortified village with

a castle.

In 1568 Bagnaia joined the vicariate of Sovicille.

During the decades, Bagnaia attracted more and more Siena Nobles, who invested in its land and enriched the countryside.

Today, the past and the present live together at the Bagnaia. Together, they create a beautiful combination which honours the ancient origins and generates

something new and modern.

And the best is yet to come…

History

Page 12: Brochure La Bagnaia 30.12.2011

Peace and tranquility reign supreme over the 1,100 hectare estate of La Bagnaia Luxury Resort & Golf, just twelve kilometers

southwest of Siena, where nature and history meet in perfect harmony. An enchanting place, immersed in scenery reminiscent of a

Renaissance style fresco where, from the windows of the luxurious bedrooms, guests can follow the flight of swallows and the running

of the deer.

Until recently, the Borgo La Bagnaia Estate, set in the peaceful Tuscan countryside, the charm of which has not been tainted by the

passing of time, was known primarily as the site of an international equestrian event which has acquired an almost cult-like following

amongst the International Jet Set.

The property, which has been transformed into a high level luxury resort and golf and events venue, now opens its gates to the

connoisseurs of elegance.

The restyling of this extraordinary medieval estate has not altered, but rather highlighted, the history and traditions of the property

with the object of creating a multi-functional center catering for an elite clientele.

THE SURROUNDINGS

Constructed on three ridges, with green fingers of cultivation indented between, Siena seems brighter than the nearby Florence, its

historic rival. From all over the city, there are fabulous vistas of the Tuscan hills, the valleys, and the city's most famous

monuments: the Torre del Mangia, Palazzo Pubblico and the Cathedral.

From the ancient gateways in the city walls, paved roadways lead through towering “palazzos” to the centre and to the Piazza del

Campo, where the famous, bareback horse race, the Palio, takes place on the 2nd of July and 16th of August each year.

Visible from many corners of the city, the cathedral, the 14th century Duomo, with its humbug stripes and glittering façade, dominates

the hill on which it stands. Magical pavements and artworks lie within.

There are many art galleries to choose from – the Museo Civico, the Pinacoteca Nazionale, the Museo dell’ Opera, the Santa Maria della

Scala – all housing brightly coloured, detailed, beautiful works of Medieval and Early Renaissance art.

But Siena is not sleeping in the past, it is also a modern city. There is much more than the treasures of the medieval world for the visitor

to discover, such as the gallery of modern art, fabulous patisseries, buzzing markets, designer shops, and the Enoteca housed in the

vaults beneath the fortress, where to find a superb collection of Italian wines.

Siena

Chiusdino is located in a defensive position, overlooking the Merse valley and

the Metalliferous hills of the Maremma. This fortified, hill-top town was once

governed by the Bishops of Volterra before being taken over by the Sienese

Republic in the 15th century. Here, within the medieval walls are the churches of

San Martino, San Michele and San Galgano, in this last there is a beautiful 15th

century bas-relief of San Galgano plunging his sword into the stone.

A detour to visit the nearby 11th century village of Castello di Frosini, the

ancient castle of the Gherardesca counts is well worthwhile.

Val di Merse - Chiusdino

As you approach Monticiano from the Grosseto road you come upon San Lorenzo a

Merse, with its ancient castle and Romanesque church and the little hamlet of Tocchi.

Travelling onwards you reach Monticiano, high up in the heart of a beautiful area, in a

valley between the River Merse and the River Farma.

There are breathtaking views over the valley of the Merse. In the Church of San’

Agostino, one of the Augustinian’s oldest hermitages, there are frescos by Bartolo di

Fredi, Guidoriccio Cozzarelli and Giovanni di Paolo.

An enchanting walk leads through chestnut and oak woods to the Abbey of San

Galgano, offering magical views of the abbey as you approach through the fields.

Val di Merse - Monticiano

Page 77: Brochure La Bagnaia 30.12.2011

Just south of Vescovado di Murlo, on a small hill overlooking the Merse valley, the

pastures of the Arbia Valley, and the wooded ravine of the Crevole river is the perfect

little medieval gem – Murlo.

Despite the internal modernisation and new car parks, to step through one the ancient

gateways to this tiny borgo is to enter history in a capsule. The ring of houses form a

defensive wall around the Castello, originally the home of the bishops of Siena.

This is the oldest settlement in the area, of Etruscan origin. Remains of Etruscan

settlements were found around nearby Poggia Civitato and Poggia Aguzzo. The

Castello now houses a fascinating museum.

Val di Merse - Murlo

The town has the typical elliptical shape of many of the towns of the area. The historic

centre is little changed fro the 14th century when it was owned by the Sienese Republic.

In the 17th century the palace was the seat of local government.

The whole of the area around Sovicille is full of prehistoric, Etruscan and

Roman remains. There are many medieval castles, palaces, churches, tower houses and

historic settlements amidst the beautiful scenery which surrounds the town.

The Villas of Cetinale and Celsa are also close by. The 17th century Cetinale, designed by

Fontana, belonged to the powerful Chigi family and was famous throughout Europe for

its magnificent gardens with their gorgeous fountains.

Val di Merse - Sovicille

Page 78: Brochure La Bagnaia 30.12.2011

On a hill above the river Merse lies the little village of Orgia. It is here that you will find, in

a converted haybarn, the interesting Museum of the Wood. The skills of the woodsman and

charcoal-burner were until fifty years ago of prime importance to the economy of this

area.

The museum gives an insight into the history, tools and techniques employed in the

ancient crafts of the woodlands.

The museum also organises themed excursions with subjects such as, ‘Man’s Interaction

with the Woodland’ and ‘Woodland as a Laboratory’, this later deals with botany, geology,

ecology and the wildlife of the woods. In the museum’s guide you will find a description of

the environment and also of the five planned walks which start out from the museum.

Val di Merse - Orgia

San Galgano lies ruined, amidst fields of sunflowers, a haunted and special place.

These remains of what was once one of the greatest of Gothic buildings in Italy, one of the

largest of the Cistercian foundations in Italy and the leading monastic power in Tuscany

have now only the sky for a roof and a grass field for a nave, whilst patches of fresco lie

amongst the vegetation.

This was the site of San Galgano’s hermitage and the saint’s life was frescoed in the

chapel here by Ambrogio Lorenzetti between 1334 and 1336. In the circular Cappella,

with its strange striped dome, is a rock in which a sword is buried.
