POWERFUL, MUSICAL V8 ENGINETHE HEART OF A GREAT SPORTS CAR

The V8 Vantage is a very fastsports car. With 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds) and a potentialmaximum speed of 175 mph(280 km/h) its performance figures are as heady as youwould expect of an Aston Martin.

Although there are many reasonsfor this excellent performance –light weight and efficient aerodynamics among them –the key is the engine, the heartof any great sports car. This new V8 has been specificallydesigned and developed for theV8 Vantage. Hand-assembled at Aston Martin’s new, purpose-built engine facility in Cologne,Germany, it is a light, compact,all-alloy unit – high-performance,yet responsive even at the lower

end of the rev range. Its maximumtorque is an impressive 302 lb ft(410 Nm) at 5000 rpm, 75 percent of which is delivered at just1500 rpm – barely more thanidle – making the V8 Vantageextremely tractable and great funto drive. Push harder, and thatV8 engine revs freely, deliveringrefined, exhilarating pace.

True to Aston Martin tradition, it is as musical as it is muscular:an engine that entertains inevery sense. The bore andstroke dimensions are optimisedto provide an excellent balancebetween outright power andtorque, while a resonance induction system improvestractability and performance,and contributes to that inspiredengine note. The inlet camshaft

timing also varies, improvinglow-end throttle response andmid-range torque in particular.The exhaust system is highlyeffective. Each bank of cylindersfeatures a four-into-two-into-onemanifold – an arrangement moreusually found on racing cars –which improves breathing andtherefore performance. Specialbypass valves provide a quieterexhaust note at low speed,opening at higher engine speedsto reduce the pressure in theexhaust system, raise the poweroutput and provide a more rousing accompaniment.

The suspension wishbones arealuminium, as are the dampersto save even more weight. Thesteering rack is solidly mountedforward of the front wheels –common on racing cars butrarely seen on road cars – forbetter control, and to providethe driver with greater feedbackand response.

The light, strong body structureof the V8 Vantage is perfectlymatched to the speciallydesigned fully independent double wishbone suspension,resulting in outstanding handlingand excellent ride quality.Fundamental to its handlingcapabilities is the fact that theV8 Vantage is naturally well balanced. And because it doesnot have to compensate for anexcess of weight over either thefront or the rear of the car, thesuspension is uncompromised –tuned for optimal handling and control.

Improving weight distribution stillfurther, the transmission is mid-rear mounted – forward of therear ‘axle’ line – and connectedto the engine by a rigid, castaluminium torque tube, whichhouses the immensely strongand light carbon-fibre propellershaft. A fast-shifting, six-speedmanual gearbox is standard, itsratios perfectly matched to theperformance of the V8 engine.

If a car is to have natural agility it must also have a low polarmoment of inertia and excellentweight distribution. In order toachieve this, the V8 Vantage isdesigned to concentrate asmuch weight as possible withinthe wheelbase, with minimalfront and rear overhangs. Theengine is positioned ahead of thecabin but well behind the frontaxle line, making the V8 Vantagea front mid-engined car. Drysump lubrication, normally amotorsport application, enablesthe engine to sit lower in the car,which further improves handlingby lowering the centre of gravity.Dry sump lubrication also allowsfor greater cornering speeds, as there is minimal danger of g-forces denying oil supply tothe engine.

Dynamically, the V8 Vantage has enviable credentials: a high-performance, advanced,lightweight V8 engine, one of the most lightweight, rigid body structures available, anadvanced lightweight body, fully independent double wishbonesuspension and optimum weightdistribution. Put them togetherand it’s little wonder that theresult is a supremely agile andentertaining sports car.

On-road communication andfeel are essential to a sports car, for any elasticity betweenthe driver and the contact pointof the tyre diminishes the drivingexperience. The driver needs to know exactly how the car is

behaving. That’s why the bodystructure of the V8 Vantage is so rigid: it ensures maximumcommunication between roadand hand, between tyre andtorso. The car’s behaviour isrelayed faithfully and accurately,ensuring an undiluted drivingexperience, yet it remainstractable and easy to drive – fast or slow.

The flexibility of the engine andthe easy-to-use controls makeeveryday town or city drivingsimple and uncomplicated.Electronic safety controls provide further reassurance.Braking power is awesome, withmassive disc brakes – 355 mmdiameter at the front, 330 mm

at the rear – that are both ventilated and grooved. For theV8 Vantage, grooving is a bettersolution than conventionalcross-drilling of the discs, asthey work more effectively withthe brake pads and do not fillwith brake pad dust. DynamicStability Control, ABS, TractionControl and ElectronicBrakeforce Distribution also feature as standard for addedpeace of mind. There’s a choiceof two alloy wheel styles – 18 inch or 19 inch in diameter –fitted with specially tuned high-performance tyres.

Outside, the V8 Vantage displays beautiful sports car lines, while maintaininga unique identity. Inside, its traditionalcraftsmanship is matched to striking21st century style. Hand-trimmed in thefinest quality materials, the cabin is thatof an authentic sports car. Driver andpassenger sit low, close to the car’s centre of gravity, where they can feel the car reacting to the input of the driver – it’s a special sensation, usuallyonly experienced in racing cars. The long, low bonnet line and two-seater cabin of the V8 Vantage offer an attractivebalance between beauty andpure aggression. The car sitslow and close to the road, whilethe front and rear overhangshave been purposely minimised.

Essentially, it’s a sports car with a simple goal – to providemaximum exhilaration – yet it is also one of the world’s mostbeautiful cars. The side profile is an elegant, simple sweep,creating a curved line rather like a bow under tension, whilethe rear haunches are wide andmuscular, like those of a powerfulanimal. It is a pure, elegantdesign – but, above all, instantlyrecognisable as an Aston Martin.

DESIGN V8 VANTAGE

The design team’s brief was togive the V8 Vantage the look of a well-toned athlete wearing a skin-tight suit. With its taut,almost stretched surfaces, thecar achieves perfectly that muscular, close-cut look.

The V8 Vantage is very much a pure sports car, so the Aston Martin engineers’ priorityfrom the outset was to focus onlight weight, compact size, agilityand power. At just 172.5 inches(4.38 metres) long, not only is it the smallest model in theAston Martin range and one ofthe leanest cars in its class, but it is light, too, and very nimble.Hand-finished body panels provide its delectable shapesand perfect fit, while an all-alloyunderbody structure – derivedfrom aerospace technology –incorporates bonded aluminiumextrusions and castings forsuperb rigidity and minimalweight. The bonnet and roof arealso constructed from lightweightalloy, while the front wings, tailgate and sills are producedfrom advanced composites.

The large single-piece bodysides are hand-finished steelpressings, and include the entire rear three-quarter area –or haunches – of the car. A single pressing means theside and rear three-quarter styleis especially clean, with the minimum of unsightly shut lines.

The V8 Vantage could not be anything else but an Aston Martin. It is a modernshape that bears a direct lineageto some of the great AstonMartin models of the past, suchas the Aston Martin DB2 –praised at the time as ‘one ofthe most beautiful cars in theworld’ by Motor Magazine inApril 1950 – and its successors,the DB2/4 and DB4. They werenot just handsome, but very fast sports cars that were alsoimmensely practical and couldbe used every day. Just like theV8 Vantage.

Hand-assembly also avoidsunsightly solutions to the inflexibility of mass production.For instance, the bonnet of theV8 Vantage has shut lines thattravel all the way to the front ofthe car, without the need for aseparate nose cone, so providinga cleaner, crisper design.Furthermore, the V8 Vantageuses metal mesh grilles andtrims instead of the typical plastic alternatives. From the moment you first sit in the V8 Vantage, you connectwith it. It’s a bond created partlyby the natural agility of the car,but also by the embrace of the authentic sports car cabin.Hand-trimmed in the finest quality materials, it is simple,logical and beautifully designed;everything you and your passenger touch is unique toAston Martin.

The instrument pack is beautifullycrafted from aluminium and has a three-dimensional profilefor easy reading. To create aclear, simple design, most of the warning lights are hidden

behind the aluminium faces,becoming visible only when illuminated. The central messagedisplays, meanwhile, are organic electroluminescent (OEL) – a process pioneered by AstonMartin – making them easier toread than conventional LCDs.

A synthesis of high technologyand hand-crafted elegance, the interior features an optionalpop-up satellite navigationscreen, class-leading audio system and even a glass starter button.

SOUL MATEAN INSPIRING, EXCITINGDRIVING ENVIRONMENT

The V8 Vantage is a pure two-seater, a car dedicated toproviding the most exhilaratingdriving experience possible, but that doesn’t mean it is notpractical. As well as a generousrear shelf, ideal for soft bagsand holdalls, there’s another,surprisingly large, luggage area,easily accessed via a one-piecelightweight composite tailgate.It’s the only sports car of its type today to feature a ‘hatch-back’ – a design first used byAston Martin on the DB2/4 ofthe early 1950s.

BEYOND ANY MACHINE

True, there is a certain cachet to a car being hand-built andmodern – it is rare these daysand getting rarer all the time.But there are a host of sensibleengineering and design reasonswhy Aston Martins are still hand-assembled. Expert craftsmencan perform the complicated,labour-intensive work that robotson production lines cannot. They can craft designs and finishes that defeat machines.Take, for instance, the singleaperture cuts for the headlampsin the front wings of the V8 Vantage. This design can be achieved only because the V8 Vantage is painstakingly built by hand.

Then there is the beautiful stitching of the leather seats.Automated machines can stitchleather, but they cannot do itwith the same lively care, orquality, as craftsmen. The sameis applicable to the finish of thebodies. Mass-produced carsfrequently need plastic finishersto hide awkward production linejoins, but cosmetic make-up isunnecessary at Aston Martin,where each car is expertly hand-finished and tended by craftsmen.

Engines, too, are individuallyhand-assembled, just as they always have been at Aston Martin, although now at a brand-new, dedicated,high-technology facility inCologne, Germany. There is norush with hand-assembly; theover-riding concern is alwaysquality. That is why Aston Martins– all Aston Martins – are built byhand, and it is why all the world’sfinest luxury goods, from suits towatches, are still hand-made.When low volumes are desirable,and exclusivity is demanded, itis quite simply the best way.

At Aston Martin’s headquartersin rural Warwickshire, England,heritage is fused with high technology. Highly trained engineers work alongside mastercraftsmen in a large, open, airyand hushed facility.

A special area is allocated to thehand-crafting of the cabins, andhere you’ll find the many differentmaterials that feature inside theV8 Vantage. There are aluminiumalloys used for switches, instruments and the facia; fabricand leather in myriad coloursand finishes, including many different stitching treatments, as well as optional piano blackwood trim.

All of these come together tomake an interior that is uniqueto Aston Martin. Many of thecabin details are aluminium –such as the instrument packand the door handles – and the coolness of the metal is complemented perfectly by the warm, hand-finished, hand-stitched leather upholstery.

You just have to step inside thecar to know that it is somethingspecial. Sit behind the three-spoke steering wheel and setthe multi-position, electricallyadjustable seats. Put your handson the wheel and immediatelyyou feel the quality of that chunky,hand-stitched leather rim.

Turn the key and watch theglass starter button colourchange from blue to red, as ignition is engaged. Depress the start button and hear the V8 engine burst into life. Moveoff and you’ll be amazed by theprecise gears – and reassuredby the excellent visibility from the generously glazed cabin. Of course, all the switches andcontrols are perfectly placed, for driving enjoyment is the priority in this cabin built around you, the driver.

There is a surprising amount of space inside the two-seatercabin – not just for driver andpassenger, but for luggage too,making the V8 Vantage the perfect ally for a weekend away.The practical shelf behind theseats is easily large enough foreveryday items such as softbags, jackets and a briefcase,but behind that is a more substantial luggage area that’sup to three times larger thanthose of some rivals, with 10.6 cu ft (300 litres) of carryingspace. So you can take a set ofgolf clubs with you too, if youchoose. Skis are no problem,either; there is no partitionbetween cabin and boot, sothey can be loaded through thetailgate. The large fuel tank andefficient engine mean that longstretches between refuelling areeasy: up to 350 miles (560 km)of touring is possible.

The cabin is full of everyday conveniences: as well as thegood stowage space, there’s a satellite navigation option witha 6.25 in (158 mm) screen thatretracts automatically when notin use, traffic messaging to helpavoid delays and an integratedGSM telephone (simply insertyour SIM card into a drawer inthe main instrument console).Everything is in place to ensurethat time spent in the cabin ofthe V8 Vantage is as efficientand pleasurable as possible.

USABILITY V8 VANTAGE

The V8 Vantage is one of thesafest Aston Martin sports carsever made – thanks in part to anarray of electronic safety features,but also to the inherent strengthof the car itself. Its all-alloystructure makes for a verystrong passenger cell and further protection is offered by deformable front and rear crumple zones, which absorbcrash energy so that the driverand passenger do not. Excellentside impact protection is alsoinbuilt, thanks to the large sills,strong roof pillars, door impactbeams, and the substantialdashboard and footwell structures. The fuel cell, meanwhile, is mounted amidships – good not only for safety but also for balance

and handling – and encased inits own aluminium compartment.Both driver and passenger benefit from dual-stage airbags(deployed in one of two stagesdepending on the severity of theaccident) and side airbags.

In addition to all this, the V8 Vantage incorporates a suiteof electronic safety aids to helpkeep it away from accidents.These include Dynamic StabilityControl (DSC) to prevent wheelslippage or loss of traction,Electronic BrakeforceDistribution (EBD) to achieveoptimal braking balance, andEmergency Brake Assist (EBA)which automatically applies fullbraking power in an emergency.Positive Torque Control (PTC)

also acts to help prevent therear wheels from locking in an engine braking situation. Headlamps feature innovativeLED (light emitting diode) indicators and side lights, andoptional xenon dipped beamheadlights are available. The rear lamps employ 360 LEDs for lights, brake and indicators. As a result, they illuminate 200 milliseconds faster than conventional brake lights, providing an additional full carlength of stopping distance at62 mph (100 km/h) for the following car. In real-life situations,that kind of detail can be critical,so it is reassuring to know thatthe V8 Vantage pays as muchattention to safety as it does toperformance and handling.
