MSc. Water Resources Management

(Established under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. F.9-19/95-U-3

dated 5 October 1999 of the Government of India)

The TERI University is a unique institution of higher learning that benefits from the enormous range of objective-oriented research carried out by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). The challenge of improving the environment, both at local and the global levels is an issue that is increasingly engaging the attention of corporate organizations in India and abroad and, of course, governments and civil society in general. The TERI University’s MSc programmes are designed specifically to help organizations, particu-larly in the corporate sector, meet challenges that are emerging throughout the world. These programmes are also of great value to the scientific community, policy-makers, as well as NGOs and representatives of civil society. Given the practical orientation of all the work that TERI carries out,

the programmes are necessarily interdisciplinary in nature and focus on problem solving. Students who graduate would, there-fore, be uniquely qualified to undertake major initiatives in the efficient management of natural resources and the prevention of environmental pollution. The programmes equip students to solve problems in these fields at source rather than through end-of-pipe interventions. This saves costs and results in longer-term benefits for the organization concerned and for society in general.

TERI University

About TERI University Established in 1998 and recognized as a Deemed University in 1999 by the University Grants Com-mission, TERI University has evolved as a reputed education and research university and attracts some of the finest minds to explore new ideas and master the proven ones. The genesis of the TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy and outreach activities of TERI, a not-for-profit, independent research insti-tute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of en-ergy, environment and sustainable development. With this consolidated base, TERI University has an MoUs with Freie University, Berlin, Germany, University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and North Carolina State University. In the past TERI University has had MoUs with School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of Yale University, Nottingham University, UK, University of Iceland. These inter-institutional MoUs are aimed at facilitating mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources and ideas. The University's special relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of its academic units. This relationship is enshrined in an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the University and TERI, wherein the two have agreed on collabo-rative research and programmes; joint studies; and mutual support for seminars, symposia and conferences. TERI also provided an initial corpus to financially support the University's establishment and continues to support several components of the University's capital and revenue expenses. Additionally, TERI's existing infrastructure — state-of-the-art laboratories, well-equipped field sta-tions and highly professional manpower - is available for the TERI University to utilize and gain from. In 2002, the Ford Foundation gave an endowment to the University for setting up the Department of Natural Resources. In 2004, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) gave a grant for setting up the NTPC Chair in the Department of Policy Studies. In the same year, the Department of Personnel Training, Government of India, entered into collaboration with the University for run-ning a master's programme for mid-career civil servants. In 2005, National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) gave a grant for setting up the NHPC chair in the Department of Policy Studies.

Mission The TERI University aspires to contribute globally by serving society as a seat of advanced learn-ing, and promote learning through teaching and creating and sharing knowledge. The University commits itself to academic excellence and an environment, which would encourage personal and intellectual growth. The University provides world-class facilities and resources to its students

and faculty so as to usher in innovative and multi-disciplinary research.

1

Infrastructure

In September 2008, TERI University moved to its new campus in Vasant Kunj. The campus, which has been constructed to include modern pedagogical amenities, showcases green building design. TERI University harnesses the best of modern technology to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of its students and faculty. Well-equipped Geoinformatics (Remote Sensing and GIS), Biotechnology, Envi-ronmental Chemistry, Seed Technology and Ecology laboratories, replete with advanced equipment and facilities, aid and stimulate research. The students have online access to many peer reviewed journals of various fields. For courses such as Geoinformatics, Biodiversity and Soil Conservation, field sur-veys and experiments are carried out. Enabled by information technology tools, the University is fully networked and has an online presence. Some state-of-the-art equipments available include high-end computers (dual processor), digitizers, plotters, digital image processing software like Erdas Imagine 9.3/8.7/2010, LPS 9.3, GIS software like ArcGIS 9.3/2010 Workstation, GMS 6.0, WEAP. In addition, we have a strong network with various research institutions and universities working in the subfields. These facilities support R&D activities in various centers of TERI. TERI has South Asia’s most comprehensive research library on energy and the environment: over 25000 books as well as many other media in digital and printed form.

Academic System

Admission procedure Admission to the M. Sc. Programs is based on a written test conducted by the University. Eligibility criteria involves minimum 60% aggregate in Bachelor’s degree. Evaluation Procedure Evaluation is a continuous process at the University and is done on various parameters and tasks given to the students such as as-signments, tutorials, field survey, classroom participation, laboratory expertise, presentations, tests, minor and major projects. Student’s performance is evaluated by CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average), which is a grade point average of all the com-pleted semesters. The performance for individual semesters is given by SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average). For the award of MSc. (Natural Resources Management), (Water Resources Management), (Environmental Studies), students are required to earn minimum of 95 credits. The semester-wise credit distribution is displayed in the graph below.

Elective Courses

At TERI University, students are given a wide choice of courses to encourage inter-disciplinary approach. Core courses are those which are compulsory for all students. These are common to Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management and Water Re-sources Management. Elective courses are based on choice and interest of students. The students are given flexibility to choose from the electives of programmes other than their own. This enables wider scope of learning and opportunities.

Field Trips

ATERI University, students are not only made to learn vast variety of interdisciplinary courses but also provided with field ex-posure for better understanding. The trips are planned according to course requirement for ES, NRM (as a part of their biodi-versity and Wildlife courses), and for WRM. Visiting the nature and the wild in their natural environment helps them connect to the nature and understand its functioning and importance for society. While the trip to Institutions / Organisations working in relevant fields provides an exposure to ongoing research areas.

Biodiversity Trip - Palni Hills, Tamil Nadu This year, a group of 33 students went with Dr. Joachim Schmer-beck to the Palni Hills, Tamil Nadu, for the assessment of biodiversity in the area. In groups of three students each they worked on various tasks such as agricultural and landscape diver-sity, fire regime and its impact on biodiversity, plant diversity and grade of human disturbance in Shola forest, human diversity, hu-man-Bison conflict etc. The students worked themselves and made hands on experience on the contents taught in the class room. Additional field trips to the upper Palnis introduced them to the unique grassland/Shola mosaic landscape and its ecological background.

Trip to Tehri and Dehradun Another trip went to Tehri dam where students saw the struc-ture and functioning of one of the most technically-challenging Hydro-electric projects in India. In a session, students also got a chance to discuss and express their views about the pros and cons of large developmental projects like Tehri, in India. Students also got a chance to see some hydrologic structures like super passage and aqua duct near Roorkee. The visit to Central Soil and Water Conservation and Research Institute (CSWCRTI), Dehradun was a learning experience where students could see various soil and water conservation structures and get a better understanding about updated technologies in soil and water conservation, water-shed development and its management from a repository of infor-mation.
