BroadSoft, IBM and Datatrend transform carrier-grade VoIPBroadSoft extends advanced telephony options and real-time collaboration with the Datatrend UCC appliance and IBM Sametime

In today’s rapidly expanding voice-over-IP (VoIP) marketplace, telecommunications service providers of all sizes are under increasing pressure to deliver enhanced and personalized communication and collaboration services to business and residential subscribers. Facilitating mobility for workforce interaction alone presents a growing challenge, as subscribers are beginning to recognize that evolving communication trends such as instant messaging, texting and using Facebook, Twitter, blogs, Skype and Google+ have become a vital part of doing business in the twenty-first century.

To offer advanced features to enterprise and residential customers, fixed and mobile service providers alike need to deploy a complete platform for VoIP-enabled collaboration that satisfies each subscriber’s IT, voice, data, collaboration and network integration requirements. Soon, it will no longer be enough to offer voice-only services in a rapidly changing communications landscape where sophisticated users are not only increasingly mobile, but increasingly exposed to multimedia services. To stay competitive, telecommunications providers must offer their subscribers instant messaging, video conferencing, click-to-call, mobility, web meeting, telephony presence and other capabilities within a single, integrated solution. And whether the solution is hosted or on-premise, service providers know their customers expect 99.999 percent uptime and the right resources to always be available.

However, offering a seamless solution that includes a variety of separate applications and social media tools can sometimes create a major disconnect. Challenges can occur when the voice platform solution and the underlying IT infrastructure are acquired independently, resulting in a mix-and-match solution that complicates deployment, slows coordination of cutting-edge features and adds additional cost.

BroadSoft, IBM and Datatrend Technologies—an IBM Industry Solutions Integrator (ISI)—provide a cost-effective and scalable unified communications (UC) solution, featuring tight integration between the BroadSoft® carrier-grade UC platform and the IBM hardware in an appliance-like bundle. This bundle enables telecommunications providers to rapidly roll out unified communication and collaboration tools to a highly varied subscriber base while keeping costs low. In both hosted and on-premise models, the simplified ordering and installation process for the bundle means it is easier to deploy, operate and maintain than competing solutions.

Deploy a simple, off-the-shelf bundle for market-leading UC functionalityBroadSoft is a leading developer of innovative communication and collaboration services delivered over broadband IP networks, helping to advance the convergence of voice, video and data. The company’s flagship product, BroadWorks®, is the market-leading telephony application server that supports hundreds of PBX features, as well as other UC services. “The BroadWorks UC platform enables business and residential service providers to offer a comprehensive portfolio of communications and value-added applications from a common network platform,” says Joe Harsch, Director of UC Solutions at BroadSoft. “Thanks to our partnership with IBM and Datatrend, we’re able to offer the platform and hardware as an off-the-shelf bundle that dramatically lowers total cost of ownership and licensing expenses.”

BroadWorks delivers communication solutions that facilitate call control and integrate video, fax and voice for businesses and residences worldwide whether through hosted PBX/IP Centrex, mobile PBX, business lines, SIP trunking or residential broadband. BroadWorks also offers next-generation UC services such as full high-definition (HD) voice and video, unified messaging and a full-featured contact center.

It’s more than just talk—using the right combination of software and hardware can make carrier-grade VoIP and UC cost-effective. BroadSoft UC solutions on IBM hardware are deployed as an appliance-like bundle, enabling telecommunications providers to roll out unified communication and collaboration tools to a highly varied subscriber base while keeping costs low. In both hosted and on-premise situations, the simplified ordering and installation process for the bundle means it is easier to deploy, operate and maintain than other competitive solutions.

Satisfy small business and enterprise needs with the BroadSoft portfolioOffering carrier-grade interoperability, the BroadWorks platform fully integrates with other BroadSoft products, giving service providers a number of choices for how they deliver hosted communications services to their enterprise subscribers.

For example, BroadSoft’s BroadCloud™ service delivery platform offers a cloud-based, hosted infrastructure model that lets service providers reduce both up-front investment and time to market for both consumer and business UC services, which are completely brandable by the service provider.

As a multitenant carrier–hosted solution, BroadWorks is TL9000 certified and exceeds the requirement for five-9s reliability, making it ideal for service providers that are increasingly looking to outsource noncore business functions such as IT and telephony without sacrificing overall performance. BroadWorks-hosted PBX functionality gives service providers an opportunity to run leaner and enjoy higher margins than businesses that only deploy and manage premises-based PBXs, as well as provide enhanced and integrated UC functionality not available on competing solutions.

“The reliability of IBM technology is paramount in an industry where nothing less than instant communication and real-time collaboration will do.”

—JoeHarsch,DirectorofUCSolutions,BroadSoft

Additionally, the BroadTouch™ product line provides compelling end-user applications, bringing together the power of BroadWorks and BroadCloud services. With BroadTouch, service providers can offer their users one familiar app with which to access all their UC services, supported across desktops, smartphones and tablets, and again branded with the provider’s own logo and messaging.

Extend collaboration options with Datatrend UCC Appliance and IBM SametimeThe unique aspect of the BroadSoft, Datatrend and IBM partnership is a seamless convergence of technology. For example, the Datatrend unified communications and collaboration (UCC) appliance is specifically designed to enable new communication functionality and efficiency gains for the BroadWorks UC platform.

The UCC appliance extends the features of the BroadWorks solution by providing a gateway to VoIP-enabled collaboration through the IBM® Sametime® client. This end-to-end deployment allows service providers to offer their subscribers instant messaging, presence-awareness features and web conferencing in a solution that is independent of an email system. The solution includes:

• IBMSametime—Capitalize on the industry-leading IBM unified communications and collaboration platform, enabled for real-time chats, telephony presence and click-to-call capabilities, which can be integrated into any messaging platform.

• BroadWorksConnectorforIBMSametime—Access BroadSoft market-leading IP telephony and unified communications capabilities as part of an integrated collaboration platform.

• IBMServerPlatform—Use world-class IBM technology in a blade form factor (rack or tower versions also available), which is specifically configured and workload optimized.

Fully integrated with BroadWorks-based voice and video services, the Datatrend UCC appliance allows subscribers to extend their instant messaging and presence (IM&P) sessions with “click to call” using their BroadWorks-based desk or mobile phones. Similarly, BroadWorks shares the telephony “presence” with the IBM Sametime environment, so that all the workers in a group or enterprise can see the augmented presence status of their coworkers and choose the best communications method based on that status. This joint solution is delivered from the service provider’s network, or cloud, providing an additional savings on operating costs compared with traditional on-premise deployments.

IBM hardware simplifies management of BroadSoft UC platformIBM hardware plays a key role in delivering the overall performance and reliability of the BroadWorks solution. The solution is optimized for IBM BladeCenter® HT, H and E servers (with H22 blades), IBM System x® servers and IBM System Storage® DS3500 storage (usually DS3524, available in both AC or DC power versions). The strong, highly flexible IBM BladeCenter, System x and System Storage foundation allows BroadSoft to deliver a preconfigured and pretested telecommunications solution for UC services on a best-in-class appliance that is easy to set up, configure, manage and support.

It should come as no surprise that the initial BroadSoft work with IBM on combining BroadWorks with IBM System x and BladeCenter earned the 2007 IBM Beacon Award for Best System x Solution. “We have deployed IBM-based solutions now for eight years running, so evolving our offerings on the IBM platform with integration expertise from Datatrend gives us great confidence,” says Harsch. “Also, Datatrend keeps us continuously up to date on the latest IBM technology, so our sales and engineering teams are able to provide expert support to service providers 24x7.”

The combined expertise of BroadSoft, IBM and Datatrend results in a fully integrated software and hardware solution that offers industry-leading unified communication and collaboration. BroadSoft is a member of the IBM Industry Solution Reseller (ISR) program, an innovative and business-enabling program designed to combine the complementary strengths of application solution providers and IBM systems integrators. Datatrend worked with both BroadSoft and IBM to help ensure the tight interoperability of the BroadSoft product portfolio on the powerful and highly flexible IBM System x and IBM Storage platform.

Choose pay-as-you-grow scalability to reduce time to marketBecause telecommunications is a dynamic, fast-paced industry, it is critical for any UC solution to be easy to install, manage and scale. The solution from BroadSoft, Datatrend and IBM is designed to offer service providers pay-as-you-grow scalability, which cuts time to market for new subscriber features and accelerates new revenue opportunities. Specifically, BroadSoft makes it easy to roll out cutting-edge features quickly and cost-effectively as needed, eliminating the requirement to purchase separate components and then integrate them on-site as new functionality hits the market.

Lower total cost of ownership and reduce operational costsDeploying the BroadSoft solution as an integrated software and hardware bundle provides an attractive cost savings over competitors’ hybrid solutions that are not designed to interoperate from the ground up. BroadSoft’s ability to deliver an all-in-one solution helps significantly reduce acquisition, deployment and management costs, while accelerating overall performance through the best-in-class appliance building and integration services of Datatrend with the powerful, flexible IBM BladeCenter, System x and Storage platforms.

For example, IBM Enterprise X-Architecture® (eX5) allows System x and BladeCenter systems to boost performance and reduce licensing costs by decoupling memory from the processor. Business service providers can add memory as needed without necessarily adding servers. IBM eX5 systems also deliver extraordinary value, reliability and investment protection for enterprise-level virtualization, database and transaction processing, which further lower TCO.
