https://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/196228/wtlc-indianapolis-asks-fcc-for-ok-to-test-all-digi WTLC/Indianapolis Asks FCC For OK To Test All-Digital AM Multicast, May 5 2020 at 5:19 AM (PT). AM All-Digital RADIO ONE OF INDIANA, LLC has applied for experimental authority to operate Urban AC WTLC-A/INDIANAPOLIS in all-digital mode for one year beginning on or before June 1st. The station wants to test the MA3 mode of HD RADIO with a main channel and a digital multicast channel, the latter feature described as the "next step" in testing after the MA3 mode was tested in single-channel fashion at WWFD-A/FREDERICK, MD. "WTLC will introduce an HD RADIO MA3 multicast feature into a top 50 NIELSEN radio market with consequent publicity to gauge listener interest in the purchase of AM multicast receivers," the filing states. "Each of the multicast channels will be carried on in-market analog FM translators to encourage listeners to seek out AM multicast receivers." The station simulcasts on W236CR and W224DI.

Mike Sanburn of Bellflower CA sends along the following from Paul Walker Jr of Laramie WY and Martin Foltz of Mission Viejo CA via the IRCA IO Groups dated 5/7/20:

Both stations are owned by Compass Broadcasting which also owns Stockton's 105.9 The bull, KSTN 1420. KGED had been on 1680 and has been leased by the afternoon host and his mother. Regional Mexican music is now on 1680: https://radioinsight.com/headlines/186958/fresno-conservative-talker-moves-to-new-frequency/?fbclid=IwAR2eWICedcRxKH8dsHqyU3wtoZImnHo561k1tRLLRkVizeGez-nvbhmwUfo Fresno Conservative Talker Moves To New Frequency, By Lance Venta On May 7 2020 Talk Radio 1550 KXEX 1680 KGED Fresno Conservative Talk 1680 KGED Fresno moved its programming to 1550 KXEX Fresno on May 1. Both stations are owned by Compass Broadcasting with the Talk station LMA’d to afternoon host Guillermo Moreno and his mother Lisa Moreno. The Morenos began operating the brand in November 2018 after it was previously operating as “1680 The Answer” under a different operator. The station features Guillermo Moreno from 4-7 pm surrounded by a syndicated lineup of mostly Salem Radio Network hosts. The move drops the Conservative Talk format from the 10kW day/1kW night 1680 signal to the 5 kW day/2.5 kW night 1550 facility. KXEX most recently carried Spanish Catholic programming, while local observers noted Regional Mexican music currently airing on 1680. Subject: 1680 KGED Fresno Talk Moves To 1550 KXEX (from Martin Foltz-ye ed) I worked until midnight last night and tuned across the band after 1 AM and noticed 1680 was Spanish. That explains it.

May 8 2020 at 6:26 AM (PT) Testing. Another AM station is proposing to run testing of all-digital broadcasting, with Brian R Walsh filing an STA request to operate Oldies WIOE-A/Fort Wayne in full-time HD Radio MA3 mode with an additional multicasting channel beginning on or before May 22nd. The station also simulcasts on W282CH/Fort Wayne. In other filings with the FCC, Miguel Rodriguez’ Radio Rodriguez LLC is selling W238BY/Crisfield MD to Roger Waters' Kingdom Media Partners LLC for $30,000. The translator's primary station is listed as Birach Broadcasting's WGOP-A/Pocomoke City MD. Peninsula Communications Inc is selling Silent KABN-A/Kenai AK and K253CQ/Kenai-Soldotna AK to Alaska Broadcast Television Inc. for $200,000. Eschaton Foundation has filed for an STA to take KBCD/Santa Cruz CA silent due to losing its transmitter site; the application was filed as STA request rather than a Silent STA request. Requesting silent STAs the traditional way were Light of Life Ministries Inc (WRNM/Ellsworth ME, silent while preparing to switch back to primary transmitter); New Orleans Community Radio (WXNO-LP/Marrero LA, lost transmitter site); and Intelli LLC (KSPA-A/Ontario CA, lost transmitter site). Ted Tucker's Cochise Media Licenses LLC has closed on the sale of Classic Rock KDVK/Dove Creek CO to Tom Troland and Michael Mallace's Desert Explorer Communications LLC for $40,000. Center of the World Festival Inc. has closed on the transfer of KCPK-LP/Frazier Park CA to California Family Counseling Network Inc for no consideration. Redrock Radio Group LLC has closed on the sale of Classic Hits KBDX (Redrock 92.7)/Blanding UT and K252FH/Moab UT to San Juan Record Inc. And Radio Sound Company LLC has closed on the sale of Silent WRSA-A-W262DH/St Albans VT to Radio Broadcasting Services Inc (Champlain Media Group) for $1 and assumption of liabilities.

Mike Sanburn and John Pearkins send along the following from Paul Walker Jr via the IRCA IO Groups dated 5/8/20:

The license for KIYU 910 Galena, Alaska has been officially handed in and deleted. Big River Public Broadcasting has largely had it off much of the last 12 years or so. You can apply for Class D FM licenses in Alaska at anytime without waiting for a filing window and that's what big River did because KIYU 910 was not on the power grid and fuel was $6-7 a gallon for the generator to power the AM transmitter. They'd spent many years trying to economically find ways to revive it and keep it on the air, but even with a financially responsible and technically capable GM, they weren't able to do it. I was a small part of the team that tried to help revive it. The AM covered 30-40 miles by day and maybe a bit farther at night. Now they have 11 Class D FM licenses. To give you an example of how small some of these villages are, 50 Watts at -387 feet more then covers the village the transmitter is in. The FM transmitter sites are at health clinics, fire departments, town halls, etc with an fm transmitter, a box specifically made to receive an internet feed and satellite internet. I credit former GM Brian Landrum with helping get KIYU into the sound technical and financial shape it’s in today. He was my boss while I was there and that was one of my most rewarding and challenging jobs I ever had while also being a fun learning experience.

Tim Hall of Chula Vista CA sends along the following via the IRCA IO Groups dated 5/10/20:

XECSCGU 1620 AM Guachochi, Chih signed on Thursday afternoon 7 May 2020. They are a religious station, based in a drug rehab ministry, but the music I have heard on their live stream this afternoon sounded like standard regional Mexican fare. Their Facebook page says they are raising money to buy a 2kW transmitter, so the current power must be lower than that. FCC Report 5/10: Pair of Stations Attempt To Use Pandemic To Increase Power Fails https://radioinsight.com/headlines/187058/fcc-report-5-10-pair-of-stations-attempt-to-use-pandemic-to-increase-power-fails/ FCC Report 5/10: Pair of Stations Attempt to Use Pandemic to Increase Power Fails, By Lance Venta, On May 10 2020. Dismissals 101.5 KZYQ Eudora Larry Fuss Delta Radio. A pair of stations that sought to use the CoronaVirus to temporarily increase power saw their applications quickly dismissed. Larry Fuss’ Contemporary Communications sought to increase 101.5 KZYQ Eudora AR from 6kW to 14kW, while Damon Collins’ Blackbelt Broadcasting proposed increasing 96.3 WLYB Livingston AL from 3.4kW to 8kW both from their current towers. The stations both sought waivers for auxiliary licenses with the higher power to “improve reception inside houses, where more listening is now occurring due to people working from home in response to Covid-19″ on an indefinite or permanent basis, unless it causes actual interference with a neighboring station, in which case the Station would “return to its original licensed parameters.” The waiver request stated that any station that operated with less than 25,000 watts should be approved with LPFM’s the lesser of 250 watts or a 7.1 km 60 dBu contour, translators 500 watts, and Class A, B1 and C3 stations the lesser of 25,000 watts or a 39.1 km 60dBu contour.

Martin Foltz of Mission Viejo CA sends along the following dated 5/12/20:

Another station to report that's off the air. Found this on Wikipedia "As of May 4 2020, The station lost access to its tower site and knock the station off the air." 1510 KSPA Ontario CA first noted off the air on 5/8.

Mike Sanburn and Dennis Gibson of Salinas CA send along the following dated 5/13/20 re KLIV-1590 San Jose CA:

Today Pham Radio Communication LLC, the proposed licensee of KLIV has, with the authorization of Empire Broadcasting, filed an application for a CP to diplex at the KVVN-1430 site. Pham is the licensee of KVVN. The assignment of the license has been granted but hasn’t been consummated so Empire is still technically the licensee. The nondirectional daytime power will increase from 5 kW to 6.2 kW because the KVVN towers are 87 feet shorter than the tower used for nondirectional daytime at the old site. Daytime coverage will be virtually identical. Nighttime power will remain at 5 kW. The northwest and southeast nulls will be a bit deeper. https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS_Attachment/getattachment.jsp?appn=101816012&qnum=5120&copynum=1&exhcnum=1

710 KXMR Bismarck, ND new slogan: “Fox Sports 7-10”. Heard several times in a 3-4 minute break last night, and their web site is now foxsports710.iheart.com

Tim Hall of Chula Vista CA sends along the following via the ABDX Groups dated 5/16/20:

Grupo Radio Centro in Mexico has gone bankrupt. Their operations had already been pretty volatile for the last 5 or 6 years. In Mexico City, XEQR-1030, which had just recently returned to the air after being silent for several years, has ceased operations and all staff were terminated. XERC-FM 97.7, which supplied the programming for XEDKR-700 and XESTN-1540, was sold to Grupo MVS earlier this week, so I'm unsure what programming XEDKR and XESTN are running at this time (the most likely scenario prior to today would have been that they would have relayed XEQR). I would assume additional sales, and additional stations going silent, will likely occur in the upcoming weeks and months.

Middle of May now, I’m starting to work 12-hour shifts dayshift training on my new job, so getting into the swing of things. Weather is gorgeous here in the 80s and sunny most of the time in Albuquerque, can get a bit windy sometimes. DX slowing down now as we approach the June solstice, then days start getting shorter again. New Mexico “opened up” Saturday 5/16 from COVID-19, so some stores can open up again, but still no casinos, movie theaters or barber shops (boy do I need a haircut!), maybe I’ll buy a Flowbee and do it myself, heh. Hope your DX isn’t hair-raising. 73’s Bob Wien

CANADIAN RADIO NEWS –Jon Pearkins Email: [email protected]

With a double Canadian postage stamp available May 20th, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Radio in Canada, a look-back at Canadian broadcasting events that occurred 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago is being introduced at the end of this column. The Facebook page Canadian Radio News by Dan Sys provides much of the information for this column.

580 AB Edmonton CHAH-cp Advertising for a full range of staff, including Hindi and Punjabi announcers, was suspended in mid-March due to government COVID-19 guidelines that hindered the face-to-face nature of Hiring and Training. Owner 1811258 Alberta Ltd. currently has a license requiring that they be on the air by Jan 21 2021, sharing CBX-740's towers with 10KW full-time.

1450 QC Montreal CHOU Still Arabic language programming under the new "Middle East Radio" branding shared with CHOU-1-FM Montreal and CHHU-FM Halifax NS. Previously, they had used the French equivalent, "Radio Moyen-Orient". Their web site is now meradio.ca

100 Years Ago – on May 20 1920, a live concert was performed in Montreal QC at Marconi's XWA (later CFCF) for an audience in Ottawa ON, marking the official beginning of Radio in Canada. 75 Years Ago – on May 1 1945, CKUA-580 Edmonton AB avoided losing its license by transferring control to Alberta Government Telephones from the University of Alberta, to avoid a federal government ruling that would stop provinces from owning radio stations. 50 Years Ago – on May 1 1970, CHNL-610 Kamloops BC first signed on, with a strong focus on local News, quickly building a mostly simulcast network with new licenses for CJNL-1230 Merritt BC, CINL-1400 Princeton BC, CHNL-1 1400 Clearwater BC, CHNL-2 1340 Ashcroft BC, and CHNL-3-FM Sorrento BC. 25 Years Ago – on May 1 1995, CBC's English and French language AM networks resumed 24 hour broadcasting, before being renamed CBC Radio One and Première chaîne, respectively, in 1997, to reflect the reality of some of the networks' major stations moving from AM to FM.

The Shelter-in-Place order for St Louis County MO expired on May 18 2020 at 0100 ELT. Just before the orders took effect, KQQZ 1190 and KZQZ 1430 signed off for good, clearing two more frequencies in my area. I DXed primarily AM and shortwave during the eight-week order due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I logged 113 AM stations during the order; 17 of which were new logs. The first new log of the lockdown was WDLB 1450 Marshfield WI, heard March 24 at 2257 ELT with a Classic Hits format and “1450 WDLB” ID. I noted a fair to poor signal, mixing with KMRY, WASK and other stations. KFLN 960 Baker MT heard at 0230 ELT March 25 with a mention of “Online at KFLN-dot-com” into Country music. A fair to poor signal was noted; judging from the signal strength, KFLN was probably on day power. KEBC 1560 Del City OK was heard March 31 at 0725 ELT with NBC Sports Radio programming and Oklahoma City ads. I noted this with a fair to poor signal, mixing with WGLB. I also noted this as KWCO Chickasha on a January 16 1994 DX Test. WMPL 920 Hancock MI noted April 2 at 0258 ELT with local ads and “WMPL” ID in promo. I noted a fair to poor signal, mixing with KARN and KDHL. KWDF 840 Ball LA heard at 0459 ELT on April 3 with an “AM 840 KWDF” ID, weather forecast and legal ID. A fair signal was noted through WHAS; this was apparently left on overnight. KROL 1430 Carrollton MO poked through at 0431 ELT April 5 with mention of 101.3 FM into a local ad. A poor signal was noted, mixing with other stations; this is the 130th AM station heard at my location from the Show-Me State. I should have noted this long ago, but WIJR 880 Highland IL was noted in the log for a call letter change at 0618 ELT on April 5 with local ads in Spanish; they were being pummeled at times by WCBS. WIIN 780 Ridgeland MS noted at 0610 ELT April 9 with Blues music, “Blues 93.1” ID and a local announcement. A fair signal was noted in a WBBM null. WKPR 1440 Kalamazoo MI noted at 0859 ELT April 11 with a mention of 105.1 FM, weather forecast, legal ID into a Christian teaching program. A fair signal was noted, mixing with WGEM; the station is the 50th Michigander heard on AM. WIGM 1490 Medford WI poked through at 0500 ELT April 18 with a “WIGM” ID. A fair to poor signal was noted, mixing with WOSH and other stations; this is not only the 75th AM heard from Wisconsin, but also completes America’s Dairyland on 1490. WLVJ 1020 Boynton Beach FL noted at 0601 ELT on April 22 with a “Radio Actualidad” ID, a brief promo into a newscast in Spanish. A fair to poor signal was noted, mixing with KMMQ in a KDKA null. WLVJ is the 40th Florida AM I’ve heard at my present location; I also noted this one as WYFX on 1040 on April 5 1996. WGLM 1380 Greenville MI heard April 25 at 0527 ELT with local ad and “WGLM-FM 106.3” ID before fading out. A fair to poor signal was noted, mixing with KLIZ, WLRM and other stations; local KXFN was off for maintenance. XEMP 710 Mexico City DF heard April 25 at 0645 ELT with a mix of Mariachi and classic Mexican music, “Radio 710” ID in Spanish into the Mexican national anthem at 0700. A fair to poor signal was heard in a WOR null with no sign of Cuba or WAQI. XELRDA 580 Piedras Negras CL noted for a call letter change at 0650 ELT April 30 with a “La Rancherita del Aire” ID in promo, local ads in Spanish into Ranchera music; faded before 0700. A fair to poor signal was heard with ACI from KFNS 590. WACC 830 Hialeah FL heard May 1 at 0324 ELT with a Catholic teaching program, mention of “Radio Paz” in a promo and local underwriting in Spanish. A fair signal was noted in a WCCO null; I’m guessing they were testing their 4.1 kW daytime CP. WKRO 1490 Cairo IL finally poked through on May 12 at 0720 ELT with mention of 103.3 FM and AOR. A poor signal was noted, mixing with other stations; this is the 140th AM heard from Illinois and completes 1490 from the Land of Lincoln. All I need is WRLL 1450 to complete the GYs in Illinois. The last new station logged during the lockdown was KLEX 1570 Lexington MO at 0737 ELT May 12; echoing behind KBCV with the “Grace to You” teaching program from the Bott Radio Network. A fair to poor signal was noted, mixing with KBCV and WFRL in a WBGZ null. Getting back the four St Louis area stations that lost their licenses: the loss of 1490 has made KTTR the daytime regular; at night, KDMO, KDRS, KTTR, KXLQ, WOSH and WZOE trade places dominating. 1510 is now just WCAZ during the daytime. 1190 and 1430 are pretty much clear during the daytime. At night, KDMR and WOWO battle it out on 1190, while WBEV, WXNT, WYMC and KRGI duke it out on 1430. If another Shelter-in-Place order happens, I’ll be at the dials, God willing. As of 0100 ELT May 18 2020, 1,839 stations are in the logbook. 73, stay safe, stay healthy and good DX from the Florissant Valley Dial Twister.

Greetings. All times and dates strictly UT. Receivers: IC-R75 with E-W longwire; DX-398 with internal antenna only or PL-880; NRD-545 with ALA-330S inside E-W or inside random wire N-S; Nissan stock caradio as specified. This report covers May 11-24. Extracted from my daily all-band log reports as archived here: http://www.worldofradio.com/Hauserlogs.html CANADA. 248-MCW kHz, May 13 at 0552, ND beacon dash and WG, i.e. 1000 watts from Winnipeg; no other Canadians audible and very little from USA on beacon band, yet a good signal here from our closest contact to Canada almost due north 1503 km = one sesquimegameter. Nearest storms along the TX Gulf coast. USA. 380-MCW kHz, May 12 at 0628, ND beacon OEL, JBA under much stronger 379-MCW RUE in Arkansas. Both are 25 watts, OEL in Oakley, Kansas, which is just SE of Colby by I-70. OEL is also closer, 401 km vs 445 from Russellville. USA. 417-MCW kHz, May 19 at 0540, ND beacon IY, which is 25 watts from Charles CItY, Iowa. I was tuned to 418-USB. Storm noise level not too bad now with closest lightnings over Montana and South Carolina. So look for more: 400-MCW kHz, May 19 at 0541, NDB AHQ, which is 25 watts from Wahoo, Nebraska. 379-MCW kHz, May 19 at 0544, NDB RUE, 25 watts from Russellville, Arkansas. I was tuned to 380-USB [or was it LSB?]. ITALY [and non]. {This SW log leads in inexorably to MW 594 log:} 7290, May 20 at 1759, I'm checking IRRS via secret unknown site, via UTwente Holland SDR, whether today there be any breakups in modulation feed like there were on Monday during WORLD OF RADIO. "Aïda" theme is already playing, very good signal and not too much ACI either, 1800 IRRS sign-on from "Milano" without any frequency or mode details, right into 'Feature Story News', not just headlines but 5 minutes' worth leading with Pompeo vs China; 1805 into 'News in Brief from the United Nations', which also seems current; 1809 to music, folk/rock ballad in English followed by a song in Chinese(?). 1819 starts 'Astronomy Cast', woman and man informally chatting, first 4 minutes about how they are coping with COVID-19, then not about astronomy but satellite repair in orbit and other space travel, not the same thing. So far so good, no interruptions, until 1845 dumps off to dead air except for the ute-warble background and ACI splat presumably from 7280 VoV German as there is nothing on first-adjacents 7285 or 7295. I let it run whether it will ever resume by 1900*? Yes, but not until 1857 when rock music fill is playing, 1859 standard sign off with another opera tune, chopped off at 1900* before it finish. 594, May 20 at 1837, meanwhile, I check for the publicized IRRS MW frequency during this hour only, and indeed there it is with same unsynchronized show plus some hum-buzz via KiwiSDR near Venezia. 594 is 1 kW Challenger Radio from Villa Estense, which is only 60 km = 37 miles away on opposite sides of Padova. Meanwhile, 'Astronomy Cast' is news to us since NEXUS/IBA schedule https://www.nexus.org/member-services/radio-and-tv/schedules/wednesday-program-schedule/ for Wednesday merely shows in MESZ of+2: "20:00 Streaming + 7290+594 English EGR Hope For Today 20:15 Streaming + 7290+594 English News and features from our studio" So there was no Hope for Today, and generic info for 1815z could include what we heard, but is it on every week? Here it is: http://www.astronomycast.com/about-us/ It looks like this be episode #567 from a month(?) ago: http://www.astronomycast.com/2020/04/ep-567-when-satellites-need-a-house-call/ but the podcast with video starts as if already in progress, not where I heard it start on IRRS; it's 61 minutes long originally. UnID. Trans-Atlantic just-barely-audible MW carrier search May 13; must do this earlier now with earlier sunrises; at 0439: none lower than 837, 891=where first noticed, 936(2), 999, 1089, 1107, 1125, 1152, 1305(2), 1566. Nearest storms are along TX Gulf coast down from Houston. USA. 1190, May 16 at 0611, dominant signal is 'Clair de Lune' on piano, very nice to hear some classical on MW; but whence? 0613 ends with EWTN ID and into 'Stories from the Heart'. The lovely piece is only 5+ minutes long, so I hope they played the whole thing. My opinion of EWTN has just ascended a notch. This is of course KDMR Kansas City MO, U2 5/0.5 kW. USA [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2034 monitoring: confirmed Sun May 17 at 0328 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, about 6 minutes into so started circa 0322. USA [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2035 monitoring: confirmed Sun May 24 starting way late at 0357 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, vs storm noise from IN/IL picked up by IN SDR. UnID. 2097.3-CW, May 19 at 0551, single-letter beacon, A, every dekasecond JBA vs noise level, as it has been almost every recent night checked, for the record; from anywhere but Quartzsite AZ.

UnID. 5005, May 9 at 0100, very poor carrier, much like we get from EQUATORIAL GUINEA after 0500; could that transmitter be on-stuck? USA. 5050, Sat May 23 at 2307, Jim Roland, PO Box in Tullahoma TN 37388 repeatedly spelling out this and website address. (How many other ways are there to spell Tullahoma?). S9+10/20, no ID, but certainly WWRB Manchester TN, active weekends only and belatedly for A-season ex 3215/3195; first reported last week by Bob Butterfield. Beware: pirates have also appeared on 5050, and WWRB has been known to fill with jazz. USA. 5085, May 17 at 0607 as I am falling asleep, realize that WTWW-2 is playing the Star Spangled Banner in a piano version, but keeps cutting out toward the end before transmitter off 0609*; of course also with the spurs 5072.1 and 5097.9. Strange that hardly anyone else take note of such a long-standing defect. You can't miss them on 1-kHz BFO step tuning. USA. 5085, Wednesday May 20 at 0107, WTWW-2 with rock music instead of competing QSO ham show. USA. 5072.005 and 5097.993, May 23 at 0556, very weak parasitic spurs out of 5085 WTWW-2 with rock music still on at S9+40/50! measured at slightly different offsets than before, which were approximately. 12.9 kHz above and below, now much closer to 13.0. Did Ted touch them up? USA. (5085), Sunday May 24 between 00 and 02, numerous spot-checks of WTWW-2 stream hear nothing but hamgab, TONITO no-show [Theatre Organ NOT In The Ozarks] NORTH AMERICA. 5100.0, May 24 at 0615, JBA rock music, mushy audio, better in USB tuning, but trace of a wobbly reduced carrier? Or part of the music. 0621 unreadable announcement, peaks S8 in OK storm noise level, past 0627 but just too weak. This frequency could be harmonic of MW 1700 or 1020, but no matches there. 5085 WTWW is off already so not a spur from that. One report from Tom Quinn, west of Cleveland OH, says Sycko Radio was on 5100 earlier, testing in PSK at 0530, switching to RTTY at 0537 with texts as copied: https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,67472.0.html USA. 5130, Wednesday May 20 at 0101, no signal from this WBCQ where W5KUB's Amateur Radio Roundtable is supposed to run; but it's on poorly in noise at 0108 check. Until the next, Best of DX and 73 de Glenn!
