BROADBAND Broadband refers to telecommunication in which a wide
band of frequencies is available to transmit information. Because a wide band of frequencies is available, information can be multiplexed and sent on many different frequencies or channels within the band concurrently, allowing more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time (much as more lanes on a highway allow more cars to travel on it at the same time).
GLOSSARY OF TERMS KB (or Kbps, or kilobyte): Kb is an abbreviation of kilobit, which is a
term used to describe internet speeds - you may also so it written as Kbps, or kilobits per second. This was commonly used to measure dial-up internet speeds and still crops up with slower mobile broadband connections and slow uploads and downloads of internet files. There are 1024Kb in a Mb.
Mb (or Mbps, or megabit): Mb is an abbreviation of Megabit. You may also see it written as Mbps, which stands for megabits per second, as Mb is currently the term most often linked with the measurement of internet speeds. A Mb is 1024Kb, while there are 1024Mb in a Gb.
Gb (or gigabit): Gb is short for gigabit, which is a unit used to describe the speed at which data travels across an internet connection (also sometimes seem written as Gbps, or gigabits per second). Current broadband connections are measured in Mb (megabits per second) - there are 1024Mb in 1Gb.
GLOSSARY OF TERMS ISP: ISP stands for internet service provider - basically,
the company responsible for billing you for your internet connection. So, if you get your broadband down a BT line but you pay your bills to O2, O2 is your internet service provider.
TYPES OF BROADBAND
DSL Broadband
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a technology that delivers broadband over your phone line to be used in the home or office.
With DSL technology, large volumes of information are sent over a copper cable at rapid speeds.
DSL allows you to download web pages, text, graphics, music and video in real time.
Wireless Broadband
Wireless broadband is one of the ways in which broadband can be delivered to your PC.
This type of broadband requires an antenna to be installed to get connection to the Internet.
Wireless broadband is particularly suitable for distributing information between buildings and for homes where access to ADSL or cable broadband is unavailable.
Fiber Optic Fiber optic is a very old
technology widely used in today’s world due to the quality of service it offers. Fiber optic provides the highest broadband speed and this explains why it is still relevant today considering how old it is.
Fiber optic is known for its super speed and it is able to download files in gigabytes per second. It is the fastest form of internet connection currently available.
As with all form of wired broadband internet connection fiber optic is also highly secure and you’re always assured of your safety anytime you go online.

As a sole trader in the arts management sector working from a home office with a staff of about 8 to 10 it is important to compare the pricing, speed, data allowance and type of broadband that would have the maximum benefits for running my business efficiently. My arts organisation is largely internet based and high speed internet connection is my main priority in choosing a ISP.
