I would like to give you an overview from an IT department point of view in regards to

satellite broadband communication in general.

• Inmarsat F77 or older systems connected to one „communication PC“ on the bridge

• Remote support nearly impossible. • Difficult to keep the system up-to

date (Software, Antivirus, etc.) • No network infrastructure on board.

Stand alone PC‘s only • E-Mail communication only on

request, no „always on“ / permanent connectivity -> delayed E-Mails transfer

• More and more request for communication

• No privacy for the Crew

• The answer is: No • Broadband is a vehicle to support the Crew on

board the vessels • The communication demand increased already and

will increase in the future even more • More reports to be done, more systems requires

online access • Flat Rate approach of the Ku- and C-Band providers

is an important brick to have the flexibility to increase the data transfer amount and to introduce even more programs on board

Phone call from the Captain: • Captain: It is not possible to open a Excel file. • Support: What have you done as last? • Captain: Installing an update for Sophos (Remark: Antivirus and Application control) • Support: Ah, OK. It could be that the Application control blocks Excel. • Captain: I followed the instructions but it is not possible to find the point, to unblock

the Excel program in the Sophos program. • Support: Please send me a screen shot. • Captain: I will do, but you know this will cost a lot of money. • Support: It’s OK, please send. On shore: The support is analyzing the screen shot and find’s out that the last Sophos

wasn’t done correctly. Write an E-Mail how to update Sophos again! Ongoing communication either via phone or per E-Mail between the Support and the

Captain: • Captain: I updated Sophos again, but I see still the same problem. He sends some

new screen shot. • Support: On the screen shot is nothing important to see. We need more information

and will ask the Captain in a new E-Mail • Captain: Answer via e-mail • Support: The support instructs him in another E-Mail to install Sophos once more and

to reboot the system after installation. • Captain: Answer via e-mail Problem is solved.

application control) • Support: Ah, OK. It could be that the Application control

blocks Excel. I will open now a remote connection and control the Server. We will inform you after the problem is solved.

On shore without the involvement of the Captain: • Support: Analyzes the problem via a remote session.

Installs the update and reboots the computer per remote. • Support: Test if the problem is solved. • Support: Sends an E-Mail to the Capatin to inform him

that everything working now as expected.

Software Installation and update

• On the broadband vessels, the crew does not have “Administration rights” to install new software. Due to this, many problems does not occur.

• The complete Software handling will be performed and managed by the on-shore support team.

• This has another important aspect, there will be no “illeagal” Software installed on company owned equipment.
