OBSERVATION OF BZU, SAHIWAL 5
Introduction of Bahauddin Zakariya Unversity
Multan has always remained a centre of excellence in education. Hazrat Bahauddin
Zakariya (1172 - 1262 A.D.), a Muslim religious scholar and saint, established a school of higher
learning in theology in Multan; where scholars from all over the world came for studies and
research. Multan has maintained its central position and centurys old cultural heritage and
therefore suited ideally to become a center of learning. Thus the University of Multan was
established in 1975 by an Act of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. To pay homage to the Great
Saint, the name was changed from University of Multan to Bahauddin Zakariya University in
1979.
The University is located at a distance of 10 km from the city center. The main Campus is
spread over 960 acres of land. The University has a fleet of 28 buses and 3 coaches which
provides transport facilities to students and staff. The University started functioning in 1975 in
rented buildings with 8 departments. Presently, it has more than 30 departments, institutes and
colleges. Out of its 523 faculty members, 175 hold doctoral degrees and among its around
13,185 students, half are females.
The University offers a wide range of programs: M.A., M.Sc., MBA, M.Com., MCS,
M.Phil, and Ph.D. Additionally, in recent years, the University has taken a lead in introducing 4-
Year Undergraduate programs in Science, Commerce, Business, Pharmacy, Engineering, and
English Literature and Linguistics. Various short-time courses and diplomas have become
popular with the general public and are offered from time to time. The University is widely
known as an institution of strong performance and high ambition because it has continued to
make excellent progress toward its goals. It plays a significant role in developing original human

resources through its highly productive achievements, both in sciences and humanities.
The University through different phases has made tremendous progress, but some recent
developments are remarkable. To promote the activities of art and culture, Multan College of
Arts was established in 2003. In order to cater to the needs of textile industry, which is a major
industry of the area, the University College of Textile Engineering was established in 2004.
The University has also established three sub-campuses at Sahiwal, Layyah and D.G.
Khan to provide education facility at the doorsteps of the people as part of the policy of the
Government. Steps have been taken to establish the University's linkages with the community
and Industry. A large number of buildings are under construction. These buildings will provide
better facilities to the students. The University has implemented semester system in almost all
the departments and organizing international conferences and seminars has been a routine
academic activity. A significant number of faculty members have been awarded post-doc
research fellowships. Bahauddin Zakariya University is the fastest growing public university in
Pakistan, and it will continue to play a vital role in the development of the country.

OBSERVATION OF BZU, SAHIWAL 7
This sub-campus will be constructed over 57.97 acres in front of the Government
College, Sahiwal, and will supply to 2,750 master's and undergraduate students in 24 disciplines
upon its completion in a three-year time.
According to sources, the federal government had already approved Rs 478.87 million for
the campus construction while the varsity administration was aspiring for another Rs 500 million
from the provincial government.
In 2005, the BZU had opened its sub-campus on the premises of the Government
College, Sahiwal, by taking 24 acres under a three-year lease agreement. Initially, as many as
150 students got admission in three disciplines, MBA, MBA (Executive) and BBA (Hons), and
this development helped many students of Sahiwal and sub areas, especially girls, get higher
education at their doorstep. Prior to this, they had to travel to Multan or Lahore for this purpose.
"Parents feel comfortable in sending their girls in institutes of advance learning,
preferably in the same city. Had this sub-campus not existed, I could not have gotten my higher
education," Hamna, a BBA student, said.
Presently, around 570 students are studying at the sub-campus offering six disciplines,
including Master's in Applied Psychology, English and Economics.
The BZU administration has also sanctioned a university bus for the sub-campus to pick
and drop students, reducing the travelling problems of many, especially the girls. The new
purpose-built campus will house an academic block, hostels for students and teachers, tennis and
basketball courts. Besides, it will have central library, conference hall, computer centre,
gymnasium, student service centre, cricket ground, faculty residences and a cafeteria.

Our Knowledge and Experience after Research
During working on this research project we have learnt many things like how to develop
a questionnaire, how to gather data from respondents, how to deal with respondents, and how to
conduct a research on a specific topic. Our research was on the students of BZU, Sub Campus,
Sahiwal so, we came to know that what problems students are facing here and what they want.
Moreover, we our research report gave us the experience of professional researchers, which will
be helpful for our academic and professional career.
Recommendations
After conducting this research, we are giving recommendation to the University campus,
the things we concluded is:
1. University should properly advertise its admissions and events.2. Current infrastructure is very poor, there is no proper sitting plan and ventilation and ever
proper building. So, as soon as possible campus should be shifted to the new building.
3. Current faculty members are brilliant but campus should call back soon as possible, thefaculty who are given scholarships of Ph.D. like Mr. Moeed, Miss Shaheera etc.
4. University bus should cover the maximum area of Sahiwal City.5. Quantity of books should be increase to give benefits to each and every student.6. There should be proper sitting plan and proper check and balance system.7. University should organize co-curricular activities for the students in which they students
should be given a chance to interact with the students of other universities.
