Fred Bates 105th Birthday Party

Brixham’s oldest resident Fred Bates who recently celebrated his 105th Birthday has become the

Honorary President of the Brixham Lottery.

The Chair of Brixham Future CIC, John Brennan which administers the Brixham Lottery said:

`Fred has always been a great supporter of the Brixham Lottery. He knows the small sums of

money raised do a great deal of good for the community. Among the many projects and events it

helped deliver have been wall murals, national celebrations such as D-Day , social events,

exhibitions and displays etc all deliver free for the general public.`

Fred said:

The Brixham Lottery has delivered such wonderful prizes including a Spitfire flight, a week`s luxury

cruise for 2 people, an electric bike or cash prizes etc. The latest is an even more amazing prize –

lifetime membership of the National Trust or cash prize! With National Trust Membership there are

more than 500 special places to visit with gardens, castles and magnificent homes to visit. Now that

is a prize worth winning.

Fred continues:

I received hundreds of Birthday

cards on my 105th Birthday. If only

they all had bought me a Brixham

Lottery Card! The cards can be

used for any occasion including

birthdays, Christmas, valentines,

anniversaries, weddings, good luck

cards. Given we only sell a few

hundred at a time my chances

would have been great!

The Brixham Lottery Cards are

available in several local Brixham

shops including in Fore Street at

Trinity Cakes, Dobles Jewellers and

the Chart Room. In Middle Street

they are available at Flour Flower,

The Wine Loft, Colours of Brixham,

Shells Hairdresser, Crafty Cwtch

Cafe or Chris Slack Photographer.

They are also on sale in the

Handyman in Pillar Avenue, Berry

Head Hotel or the Brixham Library.

Finally you can contact some local

individuals including John Brennan,

John Rudden, Frances Robinson,

Sally Lord, Keith Dodd, Jill Regan or

Paul Addison.

BRIXHAM TOWN COUNCIL PREPARING FOR 2022/23 BUDGET AND PRECEPT

As we all finally begin to see light at the end of the Coronavirus tunnel, members of Brixham Town Council are busy getting to work on the annual

Budget and Precept, firmly keeping in mind that our community is only at the start of the recovery journey. In recent years the Council has conducted an annual consultation process to ascertain which groups and organisations it should support, and what the public would like to see added to its existing services.

The most recent addition has been the Gardening Assistance Scheme, which got off to a slow start at the height of the pandemic in 2020 but is already proving to be extremely popular with our older residents.

But are there other things that you would like to see us doing, whether independently, or in partner-ship with other bodies? Below is a pie chart that outlines how the Town Council currently spends the precept that is collected annually.

Keeping in touch

You will find more information on our budget, Strategic plan and services we provide on our web-site. All Town Council agendas and minutes are public and meetings are open to members of the public, who are entitled to ask questions at the start of the meeting.

Scala Hall Survey

The Town Council is gauging the level of community support for the refurbishment of the Town Hall. However, embedded within the Town Hall is the Scala Hall. It is a large versatile room with a stand-ing capacity of 200 people making it suitable for markets, art exhibitions, fairs, parties, wedding re-ceptions etc.

We are seeking your views on what would make the Scala Hall more attractive for your events now and in the future years. Please return your survey to Brixham Town Council, Town Hall, New Road, Brixham, TQ5 8TA

BRIXHAM TOWN COUNCIL CREATES NEW TASK AND FINISH GROUP TO

OVERSEE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Brixham Town Council has voted to create a Task and Finish Group to oversee aspects of the

Brixham Peninsula Neighbourhood Plan and is inviting members of the public to join in the work to

protect our green spaces and develop new ideas for the future.

The group will make recommendations to BTC’s Planning and Regeneration Committee on

planning applications across our community, including the villages of Churston, Galmpton and

Broadsands, consider how the plan can be updated, and investigate ideas within the plan for

projects that will enhance our communities.

Speaking after the recent Full Council meeting, Planning and Regeneration Chairperson, Councillor

David Blackmore thanked the now disbanded Neighbourhood Forum for the exceptional work that

they have done over many years, developing and steering the Neighbourhood Plan to its adoption

following a referendum in May 2019.

“Brixham Town Council wants to ensure that the villages within it remain properly represented in its

deliberations about all aspects of the Neighbourhood Plan, and have concluded that the Task and

Finish Group, as well as being in line with the policy of the Council, is the best framework in which

this can be achieved”, said Councillor Blackmore.

“The Council intends to build on its long standing good relationship with the residents of the

villages, and get to work refreshing the plan”, he added. “We are inviting members of the public in

Brixham, Churston, Galmpton and Broadsands to contact the Council if they wish to volunteer to

represent their communities on the Task and Finish Group, either by telephoning 01803 859678, or

writing to [email protected]”.

TCDT Update

Many locals and group's are keeping Brixham looking beautiful, tidying up neglected areas around Brixham, planting flowers and herb's for the Bee's and the butterflies.

Local resident, Val Porter took the steps to clear and sort out the neglected piece of land at the bottom of Rea Barn, the Brixham Town Council Lengthsmen helped clear the site and remove the waste, her neighbours donated plants and seeds, John Lane made the herb box for the herb garden, the crab pots where donated from Brixham sea farm, the co-op gave hanging baskets and not forgetting the water butt given from Hammer and Nails.

This all began with our Brixham Bee Well mental health support group in which Val had the idea to create a Community garden, supporting mental health within Brixham, a lovely relaxing space to stop and take a breather.

The Brixham Edge young volunteer's led by Hannah Beaumont have created a beautiful garden up Furzeham, at the top of Vicarage Hill, on another bit of wasteland.

Again everything has been donated from businesses and locals. It's a space where you can sit and relax, enjoying the peace and tranquillity while listening to the Bee's buzzing happily about.

If anyone is interested in helping or even starting your own project contact your Community Builder Victoria Campbell 07832781031

Brixham Fairtrade Working Group

We ended in July with a reference to December, which inevitably means Christmas! (My apologies to those of you with December Birthdays, but there's no reason why you shouldn't get Fairtrade presents!!) Christmas can be a great time for Fairtrade producers, nearly all your Christmas goodies can be found Fairtrade certified, especially chocolate in its many forms, my granddaughter is already looking forward to Fairtrade Caramelised Almonds!! And the ingredients are available if you prefer to make your own, mincemeat, puddings and cakes. Look out too for Fairtrade crafts and candles. If you can't find what you want in local shops, try the Traidcraft or some other Fairtrade website. If you have been very observant, you may have noticed that the Fairtrade Town sign has vanished from the Brixham sign on the main road. If anyone has any idea where it is, please let us know. Brixham is still a Fairtrade Town.

Another resounding success. The short story competition, recently

hosted by the theatre, attracted twenty-three entries. The winner,

Georgina Clarke, with ‘The Holiday,’ was visiting Brixham and noticed

the posters advertising the competition. She has previously published

two historical, crime fiction novels but this was her first attempt at

submitting a short story.

The theatre re-opened on September the 8th with a screening of the

2018 remake, A Star is Born, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

Before lockdown two movie evenings were held and proved very popular. A professional, pop-up

cinema company was employed to run the films. This was a relatively expensive undertaking.

Therefore, when the trustees began considering projects for the future it was decided to present

in-house screenings. A large screen, projector and improved sound equipment were purchased

with the intention of establishing a regular offering of films to the local community and visitors alike.

Initially on a monthly basis. Although films will normally be scheduled to start at 7.30, doors will be

open at 6.30 to allow cinema goers the opportunity to enjoy a drink and a chat in the atmospheric

ambience of the interesting Victorian auditorium. A varied and interesting programme of

performances to suit every taste has been put together right into the summer of 2022. In particular,

the theatre continues to maintain its tradition of featuring tribute bands. We look forward to

welcoming old friends back and to seeing some new faces. Patrons can be assured all required

covid precautions will be in place.

Vaccination Centre

BRIXHAM HAS A NEW HOME FOR THE VACCINATION CENTRE

In August, the Day Lewis Pharmacy in conjunction with NHS England needed a new home after finishing their tenancy at Brixham Rugby Club.

After visiting the Town Hall to view what facilities were available, they set up their vaccination centre in our Furzeham Room and became operational on the 24th August.

If you are booked to have your vaccine at the Town Hall, entry to the Furzeham Room is via the wrought iron gate at the New Road entrance (between the Town Hall and the Brixham Heritage Museum). Presently, the centre is due to be in residence January 2022.

If you wish to book you vaccination please do not call the Council Offices but use the NBS online booking system at: www.nhs.uk

Over the last 18 months there have been substantial changes to the Brixham Neighbourhood Team. I have taken over the Neighbourhood Team Leader role and Inspector Carmen Desborough has recently become the new Paignton & Brixham Sector Inspector.

Also this year, Neighbourhood Beat Manager Dave Thomas has moved onto pastures new & PC Pete Randall took over the role. Many thanks to Dave & his hard work over a number of years. Carmen, Pete & myself have served the Brixham community at various points in our careers and are familiar with the town & any policing issues.

In the next two months we are due to get a second Neighbourhood Beat Manager, Daniel Honeyball, which will significantly increase our ability to tack-le issues in Brixham & the wider community.

The last 18 months have been the strangest in my 20 years of service. The COVID 19 Pandemic reduced normal criminal activity by a significant amount but offered fresh challenges to the Police advising, & where necessary enforcing, Government COVID legislation. At the end of May, the G7 summit in St Ives required a considerable Policing presence which posed unique challenges for ourselves to maintain our normal service to the public of Brixham.

As COVID restrictions have eased, traditional issues for the Police have come back to the fore. In a small traditional fishing town, parking is always an issue.

Unfortunately, the responsibility for parking is with Torbay Council and not the Police. However, earlier in the summer, we worked in partnership with Torbay Council parking wardens to tackle problem areas for parking, both in the town centre and outlying areas. As a team we are in the process of creating a new Community Speedwatch team of volunteers to tackle the issue of speeding motorists in the town and Churston & Galmpton.

If you are interested in joining our team of volunteers please follow the following link; https://communityspeedwatch.org/FRONT-v2-Home.php.

Last year the town centre was plagued with a racist sticker campaign which caused distress to many residents and visitors to the town. On New Years Eve 2020, a 70 year old man was caught placing stickers in New Road, Brixham. This male was subsequently charged & convicted. There has not been a reoccurrence of the problem. Currently, we have an issue with a small group of street drinkers and drug users in the town centre. The Neighbourhood Team are working with local business owners and partner agencies to tackle this problem as well as increasing patrols wherever possible.

As a team we try to keep the community appraised of issues and Policing news via our Brixham Police Facebook page. We also use Devon and Cornwall Alert, a free community messaging system, which informs members of the public about crimes and incidents affecting the local area. If you are interested in this service, please follow the following link; Devon and Cornwall Alert :: Home

To conclude, Brixham, just like the rest of the force area, remains one of the safest areas of the Country to live.

Myself & the team look forward to working with everyone in the community in the coming year to maintain this.

Shoalstone Seawater Pool News

After a wait of almost two years, Shoalstone Pool was finally able to welcome back swimmers on so-called “Freedom Day”, 19

th July 2021. We were lucky to have clear blue skies and high

temperatures on that Monday, and the lifeguards started the season for the first time in the pool’s history in the middle of a heatwave.

Although briefly having over a hundred people in the pool at one time, they successfully kept the pool running smoothly during these busy times. They also reacted to the many challenges that occur in an outside seawater pool, including broken glass, low water levels, threats of lightening, jelly fish and cloudy water. And this was sometimes with a reduced team due to some members being “pinged”.

It was really rewarding for those who had donated their time in many varied ways to see the pool once again bustling with so many happy people either swimming, paddling or just relaxing poolside, and the feedback we’ve received from users has been fantastic. We were also joined by Francesca Mills, photojournalist for Devon Live, and Charlie Powell, weather presenter for ITV West Country News, to further showcase what a special place Shoalstone is.

The pool also featured in The Times newspaper as part of ‘15 Great Lidos for the Family’ and in the Devon Life summer special issue as part of ‘Twenty-one of Devon's best swimming pools, water parks and lidos’.

As Covid restrictions have eased we have been able to gradually reintroduce events including a traditional Summer Fete in August, followed by our first Twilight Swim in September. It is hoped that the ever-popular Dog Swim will be the next date for the calendar.

We now have a range of merchandise featuring organic cotton T-shirts, hoodies and bags, and mugs and caps for sale, with our new logo. All clothing products are printed using low waste printing technology. All funds raised go to support the pool. A perfect gift for someone. The clothing and tote bags are available through our online shop on our website. A great way to show your support for Shoalstone seawater pool.

As always, we are keen to hear from anyone who wants to support us in the running of Shoalstone pool. You can write to us c/o Brixham Town Council, email us at [email protected] or leave a message on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/shoalstone/. Our website and Facebook page always have our latest news, events for your diary and other useful information.

You may have also recently noticed the new signage at the pool proudly showing our new logo which represents “a family”. This is to emphasise that the pool is for everyone, and we hope you have all enjoyed a visit to Shoalstone this summer.

And as we continue with our 10 year strategy, we hope to improve the experience even further for 2022. We need donations to help us to fund our operational costs and further works to be undertaken. Simply scan the QR on this page or go to our website https://shoalstonepool.com.

Many thanks to everyone helped us sustain Shoalstone Pool with a donation.

Rotary Club of Brixham

THE ROTARY CLUB OF BRIXHAM’S NEW PRESIDENT

ROY TUTTLE AT LAST IS ABLE TO TAKE THE CHAIR

AT THE PRESIDENTIAL HANDOVER EVENT

On the 3rd August 2021, The Rotary Club of Brixham at long last was able to conduct its Presiden-tial Handover event postponed from early June. It took the form of its usual formal dinner at Brixham Cricket Club, similar to last year with Rotary Members their partners and representatives of other clubs in Torbay, to formally say thank you and farewell to Adrian Laurie for all his hard work during the year and to welcome Roy Tuttle into the role of President for 2021/22. Former Brixham Rotary President, Adrian Laurie, said “It has been an honour and a privilege to have spent the last year, with at times its enormous challenges, as President of the Club and through out the Pandemic we have successfully continued to support the Brixham community with all the club’s efforts to raise in excess of £7,000 for good causes in the town.” He continued, “I hope Roy will find that now being out of lockdown restrictions, will enable him to make the most of his new position and I know he will continue with its Rotary aims of “Service before self” and he will continue to ensure the Club gives its support to the many Brixham organisations we help.” President, Roy Tuttle, said “Adrian will be a tough act to follow his commitment to the Rotary Club has been enormous in the past very difficult year and I hope to build on those foundations to ensure the Brixham community know that our club will continue to be there for them and hope that many more members of the town will consider joining our club in order to assist the Rotary Club of Brix-ham in its commitment in supporting the community.” During the Handover ceremony the Club was able to Present 4 Paul Harris Fellowship awards to its members 3 current and one posthumous. Linda Konopinski for all her efforts during lockdown to fund raise through Ebay, Andrew Kilner for his efforts in ensuring the Santa float was covid secure and fit for purpose so the Children of Brixham were able to see Santa last Christmas. David Sharpe also received his third award for fund raising on behalf of the club. Finally, a posthumous award was awarded to Andrew Millar who sadly died earlier this year and had been a driving force behind all the initiatives of the club and will be sorely missed by all members. More details of the club and its events are available on the Club website www.brixhamrotary.org

Bryon Freer - Lengthsmen Supervisor Update

Its been a year since we took on the Lengthsmen roles for Brixham Town Council and due to the pandemic the roles had been vacant for the early part of 2020. We knew we were going to have a lot of work to catch up on whilst still being under various Government restrictions.

My name is Bryon Freer and I have lived in Brixham for 3 years, my colleague Mike Penney has lived here all his life and together we work on making the Town look its best for the residents and the visitors alike. My background is in project management particularly within council environments and Mike comes from a background in gardening and grounds maintenance having studied and qualified at Bicton College.

We feel lucky to have potentially the best office in England to work in. Come rain or shine there is something special about working in beautiful Brixham. A perfect place if you like working outdoors!

Some people wonder where our title came from. ‘Lengthsman’ is a reference to the 1700’s whereby the Lord Of The Manor appointed staff to keep “lengths” of tracks and pathways clear between the various villages on his land.

A real highlight of the last year has been working on the three K6 phone boxes which were adopted from BT for £. Restoring them and utilising them for flower displays and bug hotels, doing everything we could to encourage wildlife and helping the environment. The phone boxes have proved very popular with visitors coming from near and far to see them. BBC Devon were amongst the media who took an interest with social media posts going viral around the world, all the way to Australia and New Zealand!

Clearing overgrown paths, walkways and alleyways is hard work but much appreciated, making them safe and improving the view for everyone. A lot of our time is spent servicing and maintaining the many, many steps Brixham has to offer. Temperance Place steps was the toughest job, but very rewarding.

We love the positive comments, thanks and appreciation of the work we do either via social media or the people we talk to whilst on the various jobs. Mike and I enjoy making the town and residential areas look great and will continue to work hard at keeping Brixham a place of pride for residents to live. If you see a job that needs the Lengthsmen attention please call the Council Offices on 01803 859678
