New location/address

As you have probably picked up from prior communications, Joyce and I have now moved house /

location.

New details are: 9 Pipit Place, Upper Horsebridge, Hellingly, East Sussex BN27 FT UK. Home tel.: 01323

Taken longer than anticipated with work and other issues arising, being away from home, but I think we

are now settled, although still have boxes to unpack and a garage within which I can see the outline of my

two older cars under the packages still to be sorted in there, but have made a start! Still can’t find some

items at time of need but getting less of an occurrence now.

My apologies and thanks for your forbearance during the interim but I believe I have picked up all

communications, emails, links, etc. a couple received associated with Compass loading which will be

addressed within the next week to complete and be up to date here on. Obviously I appreciate our move

is less of a leap than some of yours, but still seemed to incur a number of obstacles to overcome, but won

through in the end!

Best wishes and enjoyment to you all in your Scouting, Cheers Ben

It’s not too late to sign up, and participate if only for a short time. Other BSO Groups are also taking part and

given our wide time differences it may be that connecting with each other proves challenging! The main thing

is to give our young people the opportunity to take part if at all possible, and have the chance to communicate

with fellow scouts from around the world. It may also provide a great opportunity to form links with local

Groups in our various host nations ( Atlantic friends aside!) We will have a skype link and the opportunity to

play ‘Round the World Bingo’. All Groups taking part in JOTI please email me your skype link,

[email protected]

and I will do the rest. The JOTI registration link is below – just click on it!

Your not so tech savvy District Commissioner will also be hooking in from Cyprus and happy to chat / skype /

facetime with leaders and young people.

I’m always happy to help and advise on programme and activity ideas. I’m also keen to expand our links and

twinning between RoW Groups and UK Groups.

Yours in Scouting

David

The last picture is of the 1st All-BSO camp available to any Scouts who were in England in August when the UK Jamborees were on. It was taken at Poacher and its very striking I think you will agree. The YP loved this item! Chamboree (Cheshire) is the next All-BSO camp if they are over this coming August. Deputy AC Nathan Prince is the organiser of these.

INTRODUCING - John May, BSO Area President

I am delighted to announce that John May has agreed to become British Scouting Overseas first ever President.

John is the Secretary General of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation and Chair of Trustees for Oxfordshire County Scouts. He has spent his career working with and for young people in the UK and around the world. John became a Scout when he was 11 and he has worked with every Section. He has been: DC; Trustee of the Scout Association; International Commissioner for the UK; UK Chairman of Programme & Development; Member of the World Scout Committee - he served six years on the World Scout Committee, three as Vice Chair and he is currently WOSM's lead volunteer for human rights education.

In 2015 John was awarded the Silver Wolf by the UK Scout Association and in 2016 the World Scout Committee awarded him the Bronze Wolf.

British Scouting Overseas is one of the most diverse and fastest growing Areas of the UK Scout Association and John’s wealth of knowledge and experience will be invaluable as we continue on our international journey, delivering exciting and challenging programmes for young people.

John describes himself as “mischief maker and habitual chocolate cake eater” – ideally suited for BSO! If you want to find out more then see John’s Blog www.johnccmay.net

I am looking forward to working with John as we continue to develop BSO.

Peter Dawes

Area Commissioner

I was flabbergasted to be asked to take on this role, but in a very nice way! I look forward to meeting folks on my travels and helping to support the development of British Scouting Overseas.

John

From my point of view, I certainly echo what Peter has said and warmly welcome John on board. I have known John for some time, from his days as International Commissioner visiting and staying with us in Germany during my time as Assistant County Commissioner (International) for British Scouts Western Europe. We also both trained as teachers at Westminster College, Oxford where I expect our table football and bar billiard skills were broadly matched, as well as frequenting such haunts as The Fishes. We also shared a wonderful friendship with fellow Westminsterian, the legendary Jock Barr who many long-time Scouters will remember from his days as HQ Commissioner for Venture Scouts. John has already been very supportive of RoW in his day job travels, ensuring our links with host nations are ever strengthened and this is something which I envisage will continue to develop now that his role as BSO President has been formalised. I wonder how many of you recognise where John is in the photo?

Jon

And finally, a few important bits and pieces from the DC!

World Scout Jamboree USA / CANADA / MEXICO 2019

Congratulations to Jon Coupner ( 1st Brussels) on his selection as Contingent

Leader for BSO. Assistant Unit Leaders are currently in the selection process.

It is not too late for any young people in your Groups to register an interest. Please let me know asap as

selection will begin very shortly. If you want to have an informal chat about criteria, costs or anything else

please let me know and we will arrange something.

NIGHTS AWAY PERMITS AND NOTIFICATIONS

For those members of 1st Facebook, you will be well aware that many myths circulate regarding Nights Away. ( It

is like an on-going soap opera but very good for the insomniacs among you!)

In RoW we have two Nights Away Advisers, Lynn and Ben.

Applications for a permit on the freely downloadable form are made through them, and given our limited expense

account it is unlikely that they would be making flying visits to camps for assessments! Relevant experience,

evidence by way of planning, risk assessments, menus, programme, kit, alternate arrangements, costing, parental

knowledge etc. would all form part of an assessment plus local knowledge, tacit approval by GSL etc. We are

steadily building up a pool of adults with permits.

Adults must have a full appointment ( ie not provisional).

The residential module 16 is not a pre –requisite. In fact, holding a permit can validate this module.

Much more information is available on line. The NAA will then advise me if a permit can be issued and what level

and restrictions.

I am always pleased to accept Nights away notifications, which are pretty much always in good time and much

appreciated.

Compass

After the much publicised previous problems, everything does seem to be working well. Please can I ask all adults

to log on and ensure their details are fully correct, including contacts, receiving Scouting, service, training etc. If

you do have any problems please contact myself or David Bull as most issues are very easily resolved.

Census and capitation Just a heads up and reminder that the census will be due at the end of January. GSLs will

be sent the access and edit codes directly. David Bull and myself will be able to advise and assist as necessary. Ben

will be in touch post census regarding the collection of membership fees.

Disclosures and appointments

I recently attended David Bull’s excellent webinars on disclosures and appointments. They were very helpful and

easy to understand. I have attached the presentations which makes for essential reading if anyone’s is about to

expire or if GSLs have new adults applying. Just click on these links. We are making great progress and thank you

to everyone in helping move this forward. The wine certainly seems to help oil the ever present administrative

tasks for David!

DISCLOSURE CHECKS IN BSO

OUR APPOINTMENTS PROCESS IN BSO

Area team meeting - The next Area team meeting will be held at the Middle East District camp in Dubai,

next March. Following this I will be going on to Malaysia and we will be holding a SE Asia camp outside Kuala

Lumpur for as many of our Groups as possible. Many thanks to Mairi Clare Dunlin, for helping to organise this

camp. It is my intention to then visit other Groups in that region, and Ben will be making plans to catch up with

remaining Groups. If you have anything you want raised from a RoW perspective at the team meeting, please let

me know.

Finally, on a personal note – after 25 years in Germany and Cyprus, and prior to that, 4 years in Dubai, Lynn and I

are finally returning to UK at Christmas, to our house in Albrighton, Shropshire. I have discussed this with Peter

and it is my intention to continue in the role as your District Commissioner. From a practical point of view, the

only difference will be two hours in time!! It may be that this gives me a greater opportunity to meet up with you

when you are back in UK, something I would welcome very much and I am happy to travel. My email, Skype and

Facetime details will remain the same and together with Ben and David, I will be working hard to ensure you get

at least the same level of support, if not more. Thank you for your continued work around the world in this most

unique District, and whenever the technology allows, I am always very happy joining in section and leaders

meetings.

Yours in scouting

Jon
