FIRE VALLEY

Pete Jacobi provide8 a number of quotee from the late Marvel Milne's book duet where p $8 Edaewood? regarding the establishment and location of Fire Valley and the change

of name to Needles. The main question is "Why there wae a distinction between Needles (1) and Needlee (2) when ite postal eervice was contineous from October 1, 1906 to March 7, 1968".

Thie ie not the first time thie queetion hae been asked. The poetal records (eee next pages) clearly show what officially happened but fail to recognize that Needlee moved back and forth from one eide of the narrowe to the other and at leaet one poetmaeter appears to have moved taking the poet office with him.

Ms. Milne etatee the "By the fall of 1894 there were twenty-two eettlers. They found a poet office was needed, so John Bange contacted the authorities and they gave him permieeion to have one in his houee in October of that year. In 1902 John went to Calgary to etudy law eo he could become the Juetice of the peace." Like many local hietoriane Me. Milne is partly cor'rect. The Fire Valley Poet Office wae established on October 1, 1894 but the postmaster wae O.J. Vail, not John Bangs. Mr. Bange had pre-empted land on Barnes Creek near the preeent Needles Airport in 1891 but did not become poetmaster until March 1, 1898. Hie land wae erne 4 milee up the creek from Needlee spit on the Arrow Lakee and 10 miles from Killarney Landing located near the preeent site of Edgewood.

Ur. Bange left for Calgary in October 1902 and two monthe later Kr. R. Shiell took over the Fire Valley poet office. Indication are that X r . Shiell lived near the Needle, a narrow spit of land, on the west aide of the narrowe between the Upper and Lower Arrow Lakee. Shortly after taking over the Fire Valley Poet Office he had the

r' name changed to Needlee. He resigned July 1, 1908 at which time the name of the Needlee (1) Poet Office was changed back to Fire Valley (2) and a new Needles (2) Poet Office wae eetabliehed. Mape of the period show the Needlee Post Office on the eaet eide of the narrowe not in its preeent location on the west side. Fire Valley Poet Office remained in operation until October 24, 1910 when it was cloeed, listed ae being "no longer required".

Some time between the closing of the Fire Valley (2) Post Office in 1910 and the opening of the Fauquier Post Office on June 1, 1913 the Needlee Poet Office muet have moved back to the west eide of the lake near the present Needles ferry landing. The Needlee office wae cloeed April 30, 1968 and the Fauquier office wae moved to its preeent location following the building of the Arrow Lakes Dam.

I Whonnock - Whonock. I always found this one interesting because the original CPR station name was Warnock and is so listed in the first Pacific Division time tables but that name was never used postally.

Lardo - Lardeau. I don't have, any postal data on this one but I do have CPR station daters, samples enclosed, showing the two names in use. I suppose the change was politically motivated, even then.

Abbottsford. General Superintendent Abbott of the Pacific Division, was correctly named Harry Braithwaite Abbott, the "Harry" being a name in its own right.

Enclosed two samples of CPR station daters which add spice to the stew, Since the RPO people have given status (?') to these things we are obliged to present them. First, PENTINCTON 1896 and ROSEBERRY 1923. I have .seen Pentincton elsewhere. I kind of like it.

The item "Beyond Limits of Carrier's ~ e l i v e r ~ " tripped a memory sensor. Years ago, while trying to complete my rural Vancouver Tost Offices (now long wound up) I became intrigued with View Hill. Was it or was it not in the limits of Vancouver? I set out to establish the precise location of this office and struck out in all directions. I can hear the loud laughter in the distance. I did all the usual stuff, directories, Municipal Offices, maps, foot slogging and so on. The only thing I 'did not do was try for post office records as I did not think that would be necessary. I reasoned that it probably was on the high ground in North Burnaby very close to Boundary Road, and was probably in a corner store of some sort: I asked questions of various "ancients" in the neighbourhood, who, as well as knowing nothing, looked at me sideways, and I can't say as I blamed them. Even the postmaster's name does not provide a clue as to location, which it usually does. I gave up. Print this and I, no doubt, will have to dodge a barrage of answers.

FROM CANADA POST

/? Again thanks to the assistance of Pat Hue of Canada Poet Corporation, I am able to continue updating postal changes in British Columbia. A minor change in the information now lists post office8 that have moved to a new address. These can be identified as the RC number will be the same in both columns. An entry in the left hand column only means the office closed and an entry in the right hand column meane it has opened.

On a recent vieit to Whistler the topic of the poor quality of the Whistler machine cancellation wae raieed. The clerk incharge of the Whistler Poet Office was m e t cooperative and after many tries produced the cancellation below. The problem ie with the inking of the machine. 30m+ CAN-TIONS - m update See Vol. 3 No. 1 page 70.

Bob Smith of Ottawa is now publishing, in the PHSC Journal, a listing of all the large circular daters of 30 to 3 1 m diameter hammers (Type " G " ) . The Maritime Province and Quebec have been publiehed and he is slowly moving west with British Columbia, as usual being near the last to be reported. Bob has asked for assietance in reporting new finds as well aa information on early and late dates. To date 51 hammers have been reported, seven of which are unreported used on cover. Many were issued to small towns and as a result are still in use while others are retained in the post office but are not used except on a special request basis.

At the same time the editor is working on the emall diameter Type "C" hammers (25mm+) diameter hammers with the Poetal Code at the bottom. 10 of these hammers were issued to Post Offices in British Columbia during the late 1970's and most have been withdrawn from service.

At the same time the ToppinglRobineon classification used in the Checkliet of British Columbia Post Offices has been expanded to identify the various configuratione of Poet Office, Province, and Postal Code. Also Type "F" has deen changed to Type "Clc to fit the new breakdown. The full expansion classification will be published in a later news letter.

At the right, the first letter indicates the basic hammer type. The number indicates the arrangement of the wording on the hammer and the small letter "c" indicates the Province or Canada is replaced by the Poetal Code.
