BRISBANE WHALE WATCHING2011 SEASON

Whale watching season has officially begun!

The first wave of humpback whales have been spotted off the East Coast as whale watching season which runs from June to November each year commences.

Humpback whales have begun their annual migration passing along the eastern seaboard of Australia, through to Cape Byron on their way to their birthing and mating grounds in the sub-tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef beyond Hervey Bay.

The primary reason for the migration to the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef lagoon is for the survival of calves, while an abundant food supply is available for the Humpbacks in Antarctica.

Early sightings could indicate that Australia's humpback whale population is healthy and strong and still increasing. It is expected that up to 16,000 whales could pass through Moreton Bay and nearby islands over the coming months. The most recent survey estimated the population at 15,000, with an annual increase of 11 percent.

Aside from Humpbacks, stunning Migaloo and Minki Whales can also be spotted tail-slapping and breaching in the warm waters.

This rare phenomenon serves as an annual treat for foreigners, visitors, and local families who can enjoy watching one of the world's largest mammal from a number of viewing locations. Great locations for whale watching, runs from the Whitsundays through to Hervey Bay, Gold Coast and Brisbane .
