DO YOU GIVE A GONSKI?
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK As this will be the last newsletter for Term 3, I wish to thank all staff and community for
their support during a very busy Term highlighted by the reopening of the canteen, a 3
week visit by Japanese students, Year 10 subject selection for stage 6 courses, transition
meetings with Year 9 in preparation for their move to the Woy Woy Campus and a gold
medal for staff member Liesl Tesch at the Paralympics in London. Congratulations Liesl
we are all very proud of your achievement.
The last week of Term will see the end of school life for Year 12 with their Graduation
Assembly on Thursday, 20th September in the Campus Hall. After an extremely
disappointing episode involving a number of Year 12 students last week who selfishly
decided to act in a way that impacted on their reputation and caused a major disruption
to the normal routine of the Campus and local community, I am hoping the Assembly
will be an opportunity to celebrate the true calibre of this cohort and finish their school
life on a positive note.
I would like to recognise Siobhan Hope, a Year 10 student who will be part of a team of
volunteers from Central Coast Community Church (CCCC) heading to Cambodia in the
near future to help serve people in desperate need who live in some of the poorest
communities in that country. If you would like to assist Siobhan you can donate online
through Everyday Hero at www.everydayhero.com.au/event/CCCC
Deborah O’Neill our Member for Robertson has requested an opportunity to pass on to
parents further information regarding the Gonski review that you will find below.
Dear BWSC - Woy Woy Campus Community,
For the first time in 40 years, we have a chance to transform the way education is
funded in Australia. The Gonski Review of school funding has found that schools with similar needs often
ended up with different amounts of Government funding. The review has called for
more funding for schools and a minimum base level of money per student. So that all
teachers and students can get on with learning, the review also recommends that extra
money is needed for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds, small and regional schools,
kids with limited English skills and indigenous students.
We have great schools on the Coast and we need to have our say to ensure that they get
their fair share.
We can shape the future of education to benefit those who most need it.
That’s why I’m asking local parents, teachers, principals and community members to fill
out my Gonski Education Survey to ensure that the Central Coast is heard by Minister
Peter Garrett as he finalises the Government’s response to the Gonski Review. The
survey can be accessed through my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
DebONeillMP. You don’t need Facebook to access the survey. All responses will
be sent directly to Minister Garrett.
GOOD LUCK YEAR 12
I encourage you as parents, grandparents and care givers with a passion for education to
complete this survey and have your say. We need to make sure the Government knows
what we need on the Coast to make our great schools even better.
Please do not hesitate to contact my office on 4322 1922 or at
Deborah.O’[email protected] of you would like any further information.
Yours sincerely,
Deborah O’Neill MP

ATTENTION YEAR 12 STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
BRISBANE WATER POLICE INFORMATION RE CANCELLATION OF
TERRIGAL SCHOOLIES EVENT FOR 2012. – THURSDAY 20/9/12.
In previous years the end of Term 3 has signalled a commencement of festivities
on the last day of school and before Year 12’s HSC. Students have been for
some years now congregating at Terrigal Surf Club car park for a free organised
alcohol free event with live music and fun.
This event has been privately organised with support from Gosford Council.
Unfortunately this year organisers have informed Gosford Council that they have
decided not to run the event this year. Therefore there will be NO organised
activities in Terrigal CBD or any other venue in Brisbane Water Command.
Brisbane Water Police have always maintained a large Operation to correspond
with the Terrigal ‘Schoolies’ Event to address crowd control, alcohol and anti-
social behaviour thus ensuring a safe environment for the young persons to
celebrate whilst minimising the affect on the community.
Due to the cancellation of any organised activity/Event this year; Brisbane Water
Police advise all students, parents and community that there will still be a high
Police presence, especially along the beachfront areas to deter any trouble
makers. Police remind the community that all beachfront areas and public places
are alcohol free zones which Police will be strictly enforcing.
Police remind the community that if any person is seen in designated/sign posted
alcohol free zones including Terrigal CBD, Police will be confiscating and, un-
der the legislation, tipping out their alcohol. Any person deemed to be loitering
will be moved on from those areas. David Allomes
Principal

SUPPORT STUDENTS ON A MISSION
BWSC STUDENTS CARING FOR OUR WATERWAYS
Over the past two months the Support students and staff have
been cleaning up the Brisbane Water beaches and developing
their local knowledge of these areas.
The students have been kayaking and boating in the IRB’S
and picking up large amounts of rubbish on remote beaches.
A lot of the waste collected is plastic and the students have
learnt how important it is to pick up even the very small
pieces as these can be detrimental to the wildlife in the area.
In one day we picked up over 25 tennis balls! On Friday, 17th August the students had a welcome
surprise from Principal, Mr David Allomes, He was waving at the group from Woy Woy Jetty
then joined us at the foreshore.
During these excursions students are developing their safety and teamwork skills. Co-operation is
needed for the unloading and setting up of the equipment for the day, and all protection
procedures must be followed. The students work well together and show respect and care.
On Friday, 31st August, the class embarked on an exciting abseiling trip.
This is the second abseiling outing where students scaled down Wards
Hill. After a thorough set up of ropes, lines, harnesses and clips, the
students were shown the basic safety and fundamentals on the “practice
rock”, and then in turn descended the vertical face. This exercise builds
amazing confidence, team skills, trust and self-reliance. It was a beautiful
sunny day and after packing up the group headed off for a quick clean up
at Tallows Beach. Then onto Macmasters SLSC for some time in the
gym followed by a barbeque.
The Unit has also been undertaking some beautiful bush treks such as Sommersby Falls and Boudi
National Park. These treks are by no means short and while the students are getting exercise they
are also contributing to the conservation of the area. After each hard day we come back to camp
and have lunch, then head home for the week-end and a well-earned sleep that night.
The program is supported by National Parks, Gosford Council and the Catchment Management
Authority. Local oyster growers, Simon Funnel and Warren Harvey also volunteer their oyster
barge and time by providing transport for the group and the massive piles of rubbish collected.
When short of a bus for a ride we have been kindly supported by Marty from The Empire Bay
Tavern who is always there when we need him. These combined efforts of people who give all
different types of provisions for the Support Unit are greatly appreciated.

SRC CAN SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES
On the 6th of
September, the SRC enjoyed a day of team building at
Treetops Adventure Park, Ourimbah. Students participated in high
ropes courses throughout the day. Those with nerves of steel
climbed the ‘black’ course, whilst others were happy to cheer on
from the ground. Cheering was definitely needed when half the
group was stuck on the course for half an hour due to a rope mal-
function!
