What does the K stand for?

Brisbane Comedy Festival

18 to 23 March

7pm (5.30pm Sun)

Brisbane Powerhouse

http://briscomfest.com

Fresh from Stephen’s new sitcom radio show for BBC4 (UK), ‘What does

the K stand for?’ revolves around his hilarious childhood stories. Expect

big laugh out loud moments with plenty of heart, irreverence and quirk.

Stephen K Amos has charmed and entertained audiences all over the

world with his natural, assured delivery and his honest, original material.

He can find the funny in some of the most unexpected places.

Amos is set to delight in an evening of big laughs, fun, warmth and

audience interaction from the master of feel good comedy.

‘An eloquent and inherently charming performer, Amos has the

distinction of being simply hilarious too. It's this kind of triple threat that

defines great stand up comedy and, indeed, makes (Amos) an A-

grade affair. Highly recommended.’

‘His material is impeccably crafted, his comic timing skillful and,

throughout the show, his delivery remains conversational, amiable and

relaxed as he strolls through local and global topics." 4.5 STARS

WIL ANDERSON – WILUMINATI Wil Anderson is without a doubt the biggest name in Australian comedy. His prolific influence across TV, Radio, Podcasting and the Twittersphere may make him a household name, but it is stand-up comedy where Wil truly dominates. Almost 50,000 punters came out to see Wil live in 2013 – a combination of new converts and devoted fans who have followed Wil through his almost twenty years as a stand-up comedian. Each year Wil only gets better, sharpened by constant global touring, a sparkling intellect and an eagle eye for the hypocrisies, absurdities and the plain truths of modern life. Based between Australia and Los Angeles, Wil has played venues from London to Alaska, Montreal to Minneapolis and Denver to Dublin. He has even been to Auckland. Wil is a true global comedian sharing a stage with the likes of Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt and Stephen Fry. John Cleese even took the time to declare Wil to be Australia’s finest comedian. Wil was voted the People’s Choice Award WINNER at the Melbourne Comedy Festival three years in a row and he has been nominated twice for the Barry Award for Best Show at the MICF. Wil’s podcast FOFOP has over 50,000 subscribers from over 70 countries and has proved a fan favourite for those who want their comedy on tap, unedited and occasionally unhinged. Wil’s latest podcast Wilosophy has him asking smart people dumb questions about the meaning of life and has been the number one podcast on itunes every day since it was released (only two months ago). With 300,000 twitter followers and internationally successful podcasts, no Australian comedian is more connected to his audience. Oh, and his TV show, the many incarnations of Gruen , is the ABC’s most successful – topping ratings and scooping up awards including the ridiculously prestigious and global Rose d’Or for best entertainment program. Basically – Wil is huge, hilarious and will be in Australia for a heartbeat – the show will sell out, you can’t afford to miss his new show Wiluminati at the Brisbane Comedy Festival for 6 nights only.

“a masterclass in comedy...he may be one of our biggest comedy exports, with a national profile on

TOM BALLARD – UNAUSTRALIAN(ISH)

Tom Ballard wrote a page in the history books when he became the youngest ever host of Triple J’s iconic breakfast show at the age of twenty. After four years of his alarm clock going off as his contemporaries were coming home, Tom has hung up the triple j breakfast headphones to return to his main squeeze - stand-up comedy. Tom reached the national finals of RAW Comedy in 2006, won the Melbourne Comedy Festival’s Best Newcomer Award in 2009 and since then has taken the stage at some of the most prestigious gigs across the country and the world, supporting everyone from Wil Anderson to Stephen Merchant. With regular appearances on The Project, This Week Live, Spicks and Specks and Can of Worms and a comedy ARIA nomination under his belt already, Ballard is currently, as they say, "on fire". 2014 is set to be his biggest and best year yet. One of the most switched-on satirical brains in the country will be on display in his brand new hour, UnAustralian(ish) - a joyous and personal show about a family holiday, history, bullshit, flags and blood. Don't miss it - it's your patriotic duty.

MEL BUTTLE – BRING A PLATE

As seen on This Week Live, The Project and Tractor Monkeys WINNER – Director’s Choice Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2013

With comparisons to the likes of Judith Lucy and Kitty Flanagan, Mel Buttle has already earned high praise. A hilarious collection of contradictions, she is the perfect mix of almighty honesty and vulnerability with snappy wit. In 2010 with her first ever solo show, Sista Got Flow, Mel was the talk of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival where she scored a nomination for Best Newcomer. She took her funny gear on the road to all of the major comedy festivals, joined the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow through regional Australia and supported the likes of Steven K Amos, Aziz Ansari and Josh Thomas. In 2012 Mel got the bronze in Pedestrian TV’s Bachelorette of The Year (whatever), sold out a live podcast recording of The Minutes with Mel and Patience at the Sydney Fringe and took home the Best Comedy Award at the Sydney Fringe Festival with her solo show Mel Buttle, Stop It You Are! As well as a full-time writing gig this year on This Week Live, Mel kept hosts Tommy Little, Dave Thornton, Tom Gleeson and Meshel Laurie informed and confused with her weekly ‘live crosses’. Mel was a regular on The Project, popped up on Tractor Monkeys and in her proudest achievement to date scored three tweets on ABC1’s Q&A in three straight weeks. Mel is in demand as a writer too with a weekly column in the Courier Mail and up until they stopped the presses earlier this year her own column in triple j’s J Mag called How Embarrassment. She also has writing credits on TV shows You’re Skitting Me (ABC2) and Please Like Me (ABC2 and Pivot). Radio lovers will know Mel from Mel’s Strongly Worded Letters on triple j’s Breakfast with Tom and Alex, as a regular guest host on a suite of 612 ABC radio programs and Nova 100’s Weekend Breakfast with Tommy Little And because she’s not busy enough, Media Maven Mel also produces two podcasts with Patience Hodgson, singer from The Grates. The Minutes and You’re Welcome shot straight to number 2 overall on the Australian iTunes chart on their debut. Mel will debut her brand new solo show, Bring A Plate, at the Brisbane Comedy Festival. “she owns her unease, detailing it all with vulnerable, self-effacing sarcasm at a cracking, energetic pace...she grabs the attention and keeps the anecdotes coming thick and fast” Chortle 2013 “the right mix of sarcastic self-deprecation and genuine vulnerability...expect in future to see Mel Buttle mature in to one of the best Australian comics” ★★★★ Herald Sun 2013 Venue: Brisbane Powerhouse - Turbine Address: 119 Lamington St, New Farm Dates: Tues 11 - Sun 16th March Time: Tues-Sat 7:15pm, Sun 5:15pm Ticket Prices: Fri/Sat All Tix: $28, Full $25, Conc $22, Preview (11th Mar) $20 Bookings: www.briscomfest.com or 3358 8600

FOR RELEASE WHENEVER YOU GET AROUND TO IT. BUT PREFERABLY IMMEDIATELY FOR THE SAKE OF OUR TICKET SALES.

The Chaser’s War On Everything made Andrew Hansen and Chris Taylor household names, in half a dozen houses belonging to people who already knew them beforehand. Everyone else knows them as ‘those Chaser guys’, or simply ‘those pricks’.

Now Chris and Andrew present a live showcase of brand new sketches and songs, tipped to feature daring, never-before-seen concepts such as a Game of Thrones parody and a Kevin Rudd impression. Fun for all ages! But with a particular focus on the 43 to 43-and-a-half year old market.

‘I adore the thrill of the theatre,’ said Andrew. ‘Not the showbiz theatre though - the operating theatre. I love the spontaneity of being operated on.’

Chris and Andrew’s last live outing as a duo, Sydney Theatre Company’s Dead Caesar, played to packed houses largely due to a ticketing mixup with the latest David Williamson. Now, with Logies and AFI Awards, plus an ARIA for their musical comedy album The Blow Parade, Chris and Andrew are delighted that hardly anyone realises entertainment awards are arbitrary and worthless.

‘An unforgettable evening of songs and laughter is guaranteed,’ said Chris, ‘in a different theatre nearby. Meanwhile we’ll be staging a lengthy tribute to Rolf Harris.’

PETER HELLIAR – TOTES GROUSEBALLS Peter Helliar is one of the biggest names in Australian comedy and his brand new standup show is totes amazeballs with added grouse. Peter Helliar is a natural born comedian, taking an affectionate swipe at Australian suburbia, sport, family and fatherhood. His characterisations, terrible accents and relentless and infectious energy have kept Pete at the top of the comedy world ever since he made himself known on Rove in 1999. In 2013 Helliar’s coin toss to write, direct, produce and act in his very own TV comedy series paid off. It’s A Date was an audience and critical favourite, the scripted series earning praise for its funny, yet poignant take on real life dating dilemmas. Pete attracted the who’s-who of Aussie showbiz for the first series (John Wood, Asher Keddie, Kate Ritchie, Stephen Curry et al). It’s A Date took out the award for Best Scripted Format in the International Format Awards at MIPCOM in 2013 in Cannes and the ABC wasted no time in commissioning a second series. One of the country’s most versatile performers, a comedy club and festival stalwart, TV regular (The Project ), movie maker (feature film I Love You Too ) and king of character comedy with his alter-ego Strauchanie - a night out with Peter Helliar live on stage is a no-brainer, certain to be Totes Grouseballs.

Brisbane Powerhouse presents Nob Happy Sock

He’s won the Golden Gibbo at Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Outstanding Comedy Award at Melbourne Fringe Festival and now Brisbane audiences can see Simon Keck’s comic exploration of suicide Nob Happy Sock at Brisbane Comedy Festival from 18-23 March 2014.

Nob Happy Sock had a sold-out run at Melbourne Fringe festival and saw award-winning comedian Simon Keck earn critical acclaim, with Crikey describing the show as “both a confronting emotional examination of depression and a very funny comedy show, and Simon deserves all the credit for somehow pulling the mix off. His mix of smart, self-aware writing and polished performance gives this show a visceral weight, while the jokes and stories stop that weight from crushing the audience.”

According to Simon the show was inspired by his suicide attempt in 2008 and his subsequent comedy career.

“No one likes talking about suicide, and the challenge of making a comedy show about depression does seem to be, at first glance, a terrible idea.

“However I’ve taken the adage that comedy equals tragedy plus time and seen it to its logical conclusion. While the show does deal with depression and suicide it’s proven to be uplifting and funny so I promise the night won’t be a series of depressing episodes or -potentially more annoying - trite inspirational stories.”

Simon Keck has won The Sunday Showdown competition twice, is a nominee for Best Independent Melbourne Comedian and has written for Rove: Live, ABC’s The Comedy Hour, Melbourne Writer’s Festival, J-Mag, Weekly Review, Crikey, The Big Issue and VICE.

SARAH KENDALL - TOUCHDOWN

Perrier Award Nominee, Time Out London Comedy Award Nominee and Herald Angel Award Winner Sarah Kendall started her stand up career in Australia before pulling up stumps and moving to the other side of the world, to London to be exact. While she has been there she has managed to have a couple of kids, tour the world, score a nomination for live comedy’s most prestigious prize and become one of the most formidable stand ups going around. Intelligent, insightful, occasionally contrary and often meandering – Sarah’s shows take you for a walk around her brain. She usually has point, generally a very good one, but the real pleasure is getting there. Sarah returns to the Australia with her brand new show, Touchdown. Set in 1992, it is the true story of when Sarah joined her High School Touch Football Team and became one-tenth of the greatest under-14s team ever assembled. Sarah burst onto the world stage at the 2001 Edinburgh Festival and has gone on to perform at comedy festivals around the world including Montreal, Kilkenny, Edinburgh, Melbourne and Hong Kong. She’s won, or been nominated for, nearly every global comedy award possible and in 2004 was the first woman in nine years to receive a prestigious Perrier Award Nomination at the Edinburgh Festival. In the UK Sarah’s sardonic humour and pitch perfect delivery helped land her a role in the gloriously silly all-female TV sketch show for E4, Beehive. She also took a turn on BBC radio comedy shows The Now Show, Dilemma, and The Stephen K Amos Show. Sarah also stars alongside Sally Phillips and Nina Conti in one of British radios best loved and longest running sitcoms, Clare in the Community.

After a hiatus for the birth of her first child, Sarah returned to stand-up in 2012 with her show Get Up, Stand Up. The show was a jolly romp through the creeping sexualisation of mainstream culture and the erosion of feminism, and it garnered nine 4 and 5 star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe resolutely announcing her return to the top of the game. She took that same show to the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2013 as Persona to a rapturous response. Don’t miss the return of the prodigal daughter of Australian comedy when Sarah Kendall does to Brisbane what she did to the Newcastle & District Under-14s Touch Football Competition in 1992. Sarah’s new show Touchdown is a certain score!

Dave O’Neil in ‘Back in my Day’ Dave O’Neil returns to the Brisbane Comedy Festival with a brand new stand-up comedy show. Dave has been pondering if things really were better back in his day. When it was less Twitter more Twister, less X-Factor more x-men and less Redfoo more Red Symons. A time before mobile phones, computers and Kyle Sandilands. Dave takes you on a roller coaster ride of his childhood – caravans, clark rubber pools and home made bombs. Now as a father of three young children, Dave ponders their childhood – organic free range pizzas, yoga camps and friends called Buttercup. For people over thirty this show will be a confirmation of every thing they ever thought. For people under thirty, it will be more like a history lesson. NOMINATED Best Newcomer, Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2013 NOMINATED Best Comedy, Sydney Fringe Festival, 2012

Widely regarded as one of the top rising stars of Australian comedy Brisbane’s Damien Power has sold out shows around Australia.

Power’s material is as dynamic as it is accessible, covering everything from personal stories about his brother Will Power (a famous Indy car driver) to formidable political and social commentary. Having perfected his work around the country for years in pubs and festivals and all the way to the Sydney Opera House, Damien Power knows how to command an audience. And we’re not the only ones who think so - hot off the back of his 2013 sell out Melbourne International Comedy Festival season and subsequent Best Newcomer Award nomination, Damien was chosen by Jack Black to support Tenacious D on their Australian tour. Momentum for Damien Power started to build in 2012 when was selected by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to perform in their exclusive showcase of Australia’s best emerging comedians, The Comedy Zone. Later the same year he was nominated for Best Comedy at the Sydney Fringe Festival for his solo show Monkeys in Space.

Now a full time stand-up comedian, Damien Power is carving his credentials through comedy clubs and festivals across the country. His new solo show, Keit, will premiere in his hometown of Brisbane before it tours across the rest of the country.

SAM SIMMONS – DEATH OF A SAILS-MAN

As seen on Conan. As heard on triple j.

A man fights a photocopier live on stage for an entire hour whilst having an existential midlife crisis on a sailing boat*. Death Of A Sails-Man is a true story performed by the inimitable Sam Simmons and will be at the Brisbane Comedy Festival for six nights only. Home briefly from his base in LA and fresh from his debut appearance on the comedy powerhouse Conan in the US, Sam is about to go off like a prawn in a hot sock! Sam held down his own weekly show at the Virgil in Hollywood, inviting the cream of American indy comedy into his world. He took the stage in Montreal, Toronto, Chicago and in London with a sell out West End run. A true global comedian, Sam has now settled (as much as he ever does) in LA, dreaming up improbable ideas and saying them out loud to important people. Sam is our grand master of suburban absurdism and created and starred in one of the most exciting and offbeat Australian TV sketch comedy show in decades, Problems, on ABC1 in 2012 - a show which starred Ronny Chieng as a cat and may lead to the patent of the Christmas Samoan. Death Of A Sails-Man is taking shape in Sam’s head as we speak. There will be office equipment, wind surfing, some time travel and some intense moustache yelling.

He is surely our nation’s most splendidly life affirming idiot. See Simmons now before he’s disappears into a world of hookers and Hollywood.

★★★★★ The Age

With a razor sharp wit and a body like a wet comedy noodle, Barry Humphries-esque comic Asher Treleaven is one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed comedians. This year he explains why being an asshole is bad for the economy and being good is good for everyone.

Money seems to be Australians number 1 concern. People are more concerned about the economy than they are about anything else says the Scanlon Foundations Social Cohesion Study for 2013. Even death seems to rank somewhere around 3rd or 4th. So with that in mind and our new conservative overlords firmly in power Treleaven has decided to try and convince the conservative among us that being an asshole is bad for the economy and being good and humane is good for your bank balance.

A two time Barry nominee Treleaven is truly a rare creature his blend of physical comedy, stand up and his burgeoning sense of socio political satire have made him one of the most fascinating comics working in Australia today. A graduate of the National Institute of Circus Arts in Australia, Treleaven has been performing for over a decade including four years as a principal cast member of La Soiree. He launched his comedy career in 2005, which has since taken him to the Edinburgh Fringe and London’s Soho Theatre. His 2010 show Secret Door picked up five-star reviews, four awards and was The Age Critics’ Choice at the MICF that year. A ‘must’ for your festival dance card.

This has nothing to do with Leonardo Di Caprio. And it ain’t about lettuce. It’s about perspective - what we see, what we think we know, and what is actually going on. You know what’s underneath the tip of the iceberg? The rest of the iceberg.

When you’ve already agreed to go to a friend’s birthday lunch; then find out it’s a 4-hour drive, hotel room, and $300/head? You got Iceberg-ed.

It’s being angry about the 4700 boat people in Australia, but actually 60,000 illegal immigrants are already here overstaying their visas (from UK, US & China)? That’s the Iceberg.

For all the moments where you think you understand the enormity of a situation, then the water drains; and you step back to realise what you’re really dealing with.

In 2012, Felicity was nominated or won every Best Comedy award at Australia’s four main comedy festivals for her critically acclaimed show, The Hedgehog Dilemma. She is the first comedian to ever achieve this.

After touring the USA, and the UK, Felicity debuts her highly anticipated follow-up, The Iceberg. Without judging, without showboating and without motor-boating, the Iceberg asks us to consider our perception versus the reality. Whether you choose to look or not, is up to you…

CAL WILSON

IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME

You only live once. But what if you got three or four lives? What life would Cal Wilson be living right now if she had made different life choices? Cal Wilson, the surgeon? Cal Wilson, the poet? Or Cal Wilson, the bloke? It Could Have Been Me is a new hour of stand-up and characters from Cal and her alter egos, all live on stage. Fans of Cal’s regular comedy club gigs are familiar with her hilarious, uncanny ability to bring characters to life. Cal has shown these character acting skills to the rest of the country on shows like Thank God You’re Here, SkitHouse and The Wedge , alongside Rebel Wilson. In 2013 Cal was team captain on the TV comedy hit of 2013, SlideShow , a shamelessly fun hour of improvised slapstick. Cal is a diverse and prolific comedian, having appeared regularly on Network Ten’s Good News Week, ABC-TV’s Spicks and Specks , New Zealand’s TV3 news comedy show 7 Days. In 2012 Cal was invited to join the cast of QI, with Stephen Fry and Alan Davies as part of their Australian stage tour. Cal was then invited to the UK to appear in two episodes of BBC’s iconic comedy show, both of which went to air in 2013. But it is on stage where Cal truly shines. With her alter egos joining her on stage for It Could Have Been Me Brisbane Comedy Festival audiences are in for a laughing treat.

FRANK WOODLEY – FOOL’S GOLD Frank Woodley is back with a brand new solo show, Fool’s Gold. One of our greatest comedic talents Woodley is the master of classic comedy shtick with an astutely creative modern day twist. After 20 years in the much loved, Perrier Award-winning duo Lano and Woodley, Frank said Good Bye to being one half of a double act in 2006 with a national tour that took in 34 markets and sold more than 125,000 tickets. He has since gone on to create three hugely successful solo shows, Possessed, Bewilderbeest and Bemusement Park. Last year he premiered the daring stage show, Inside, alongside Simon Yates from acclaimed physical troupe, acrobat. The Kafka-esque piece was applauded for being dark, funny and at times challenging, but uniquely brilliant. It reminded audiences that Frank Woodley is a true artist. Woodley’s imaginative brilliance was also on display in 2012 with the TV show, Woodley (ABC1), which he wrote, produced and stared in opposite the incredible talent of Justine Clarke and newcomer Alexandra Cashmere. The romantic comedy, filled with virtuosic physical mayhem, also landed Frank an AACTA nomination for Best Performance in a Television Comedy.

Australia’s most visually compelling comedian’s natural habitat is the stage; it is in his live shows that Woodley’s in-his-bones funny, physicality and whimsical slapstick come to life. Fool’s Gold is sure to give you that tingly feeling you're left with after you've laughed like a crazy person.

“truly genius physical comedian” The Age

“comedy doesn’t come much better than this. Seriously” Herald Sun

“Woodley has so cleverly matured into the most immature performer in Australian comic history” Courier Mail

GLENN WOOL

This Road Has Tolls

Another year, another lap around the world for this tetherless vagabond. When people ask me what it’s like, living a life on the road, I tell them, it’s a wonderful way to spend your mid-20s, while my driver’s license ruefully reminds me that I'm in my late 30s. I don't regret my decisions but I will say that even Google Maps will warn you, when you type my average year’s travel into their engine, that This Road has Tolls. “Effortlessly funny with an affability that other comics can only dream of – You have to go and see Glenn Wool. ” The Guardian "Edgy, imaginative, funny and original, Canadian born Wool sets the standards at the fringe” Daily Telegraph “ If Like me, you believe that nobody could be much funnier than a cross between Jack Black and Meat Loaf, then you’ll be pleased to learn that such a man exists” The Independent on Sunday
