Bringing Global Learning toAbbotswood
Primary School
Our Project:Global Citizenship
• To immerse the children in different cultures from around the world -
starting with Kenya.
• We chose Kenya so that we could compare the similarities and
differences between children’s lives.
Initial Assessment
14th November 2010 – Su (Year 4)
From our initial assessments we found that the
children had limited geographical
knowledge of the world.
Throughout the term we decided to
dedicated 15 minutes a week to
improve this. In Busy book time, we set the children a
task involving map
work.
Within our class we introduced a ‘Global learning log’. Each
child was then paired up with someone
they wouldn’t usually work with.
We decided to work in this way because
we wanted the children to experience
challenging and conflicting views
different from their own.

We taught lessons focusing on everyday life (making comparisons) and the culture of Kenya.

When teaching the children about everyday life in Kenya, we thought it would be more relevant to the children if we
were to teach the facts through a character.
Through teaching the children about different cultures in Kenya they have become more interested in the world
around them.After…

Where do we go from here?
• Staff training to introduce Global learning to the school (March ‘11).
• As a school, we have subscribed to the children's newspaper (first news) and will encourage other teachers to use and focus on the world news section.
•More books to be added to the school library about different cultures.
•Plot subject throughout the school linking where possible with Edison curriculum.
