Despite the growth in data breaches, security managers at Indian firms are incredibly confident in their cybersecurity preparedness, according to a new survey conducted by research and consul-tancy firm Ovum for Silicon Valley analytics firm FICO. Eighty-eight percent of executives from Indian firms said their firm was better prepared than their competitors in their industry. Financial services and utility respondents were least real-istic, with 100 percent rating their firm as above average or as top performers, while retail ser-vices had the highest percentage who said their firms were top performers at 60 percent.Despite this confidence, almost 1 in 3 organi-

zations are limited to tools that provide only a point-in-time assessment of what their cyberse-curity risk is, or do not currently have a robust assessment program.“There is clearly a bit of a disconnect amongst security managers regarding where they sit in relation to the competition,” said Vishal Goyal, Country Manager, India, FICO. “In India the rapid digitization of numerous sectors of the economy has presented the country with enormous oppor-tunity as well as risk. Staying abreast of global standards and the rapidly changing landscape of cybersecurity remains a challenge. Complacency creeps in when companies escape data breeches, or simply haven’t picked them up, so it’s import-ant to ensure regular robust assessments.”In the coming year, the majority (56%) of Indian firms felt that the level of cyber-threats and data breach activity will go up. However, it was finan-cial services firms that were the most pessimistic with 80 percent expecting an increase. This was in contrast to Indian utility companies where all

As enterprises con-tinue their digital transformation efforts, shifting to ‘pay for use’ will continue. This sets enter-prises up to deal with the sustained and rapid change that underscores digital business.”Enterprise software spending is forecast to experience the highest growth with an 8.3 per-cent increase in 2019 (see Table 1). For retailers and telecommunications it was increases in cyber-attacks and breaches that have them focused.62 percent of Indian firms say cybersecurity investment will increase in the year ahead. This rose to 67 percent amongst Indian financial ser-vices firms and 80 percent for utilities.“IT leaders have greater funding than ever to pro-tect organizations from the continuously evolving threat landscape and meet complex compliance demands,” said Maxine Holt, research director at Ovum. “These same IT leaders are undoubt-edly keen to believe that the money being spent provides their organization with a better security posture than any other – but the rapid pace of investment, often in point solutions, rarely takes an organization-wide view of security.”

SPECIAL NEWS

Supply chains these days can be bewilderingly complex. Depending on the product, they can involve every-thing from countless players and trans-actions to multiple

regulations. Plus, most systems are highly opaque and often inefficient. So how can supply chains get better? For a grow-ing number of companies, the answer lies in blockchain technology.“There are tremendous applications using block-chain for addressing supply chain issues,” says Rohini Srihari, chief data scientist of PeaceTech Lab, a nonprofit that uses technology, media and data to create peace-building efforts.Blockchain for business with Cisco’s Anoop Nan-nraOften described as a digital ledger that’s distrib-uted over many nodes, or computers, blockchain systems are highly transparent. And while many users may have access to the data, they can’t tam-per with it. The upshot is a secure and public dig-ital trail of transactions. For supply chains, that means the potential for creating a permanent and safe record of each time materials or products move from one stage of the chain to the next. The result: a reduction in delays, fraud, human error—you name it—and a potentially foolproof system for end-to-end tracking.“Blockchain driven innovations in the supply chain will have the potential to deliver tremen-dous business value by increasing supply chain transparency, reducing risk and improving effi-ciency and overall supply chain management,” is how a recent report from Deloitte puts it.Traceability

The project, which is designed to help manufac-turers, integrators, and business partners fight counterfeit hard drives, uses the IBM Blockchain Platform to authenticate the provenance of disk drive products, bringing a new level of multi-lay-ered security protection to the data management industry.According to the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, global trade in counterfeit and pirated electronic products has reached more than $1.7 trillion in value. To verify product authenticity, Sea-gate will update the IBM Blockchain Platform on the IBM Cloud with product authentication data based on the Seagate Secure™ Electronic ID (eID) at the point of manufacture. Each unique identifier (serving as an electronic fingerprint) can be used to verify the identity of a hard drive at any time during its product life cycle. Seagate’s Certified Erase employs cryptographic erasure technol-ogy to produce a digital certificate of data purge, which is electronically signed by the device under the Seagate Secure public key infrastructure (PKI) and stored on the blockchain for compliance man-agement with emerging global data privacy laws.

Clearly, one advantage is the ability to trace every product down the line to the original source. It’s particularly important for the food industry. Walmart, for example, recently started using blockchain technology to keep track of pork sourced from China. The system records the original source of the meat, as well as where it’s processed, stored, and its sell-by-date. At a blockchain conference in Cambridge, Mass, Walmart Vice President of Food Safety and Health Frank Yiannas described the company’s ability to reduce the time it takes to track produce from six days to two seconds using a system developed with IBM.But the food industry isn’t the only sector that can benefit from an accurate tracing system. Take BHP Billiton, the global mining, metals and petro-leum company. The copper, iron, coal and nickel it extracts from around the world have to travel across many parties and a host of information is required every step of the way to comply with regulations. With that in mind, the company recently developed a web and mobile blockchain application allowing their employees and part-ners to track information about mining samples in one real-time system.Ensuring sustainable supply chainsThe transparency of blockchain technology can also help companies establish their supply chain bona fides as supporting environmental steward-ship and sustainable manufacturing. Consider London-based Provenance. Started in 2013, the company aims to allow environmentally-minded consumers to make sure the supply chain for the food and beverages they’re buying meets their standards.“Consumers want to know about the provenance of products at different stages—where things

come from, who made it and from what,” says founder Jessi Baker. The many applications for blockchainIn one early pilot, for example, fishermen used text messages to register a catch on the block-chain. Then, the blockchain ID was tied to every step along the chain and could be used to track and audit information establishing that the fish was caught not just legally, but also sustainably. Some companies are taking advantage of stream-lined, blockchain-based supply chain systems to create more-efficient marketplaces. For example, Pavo, a web and mobile app, creates an agricul-ture trading space where consumers, families, distributors, local restaurants and grocers can connect directly with farms to buy food and other agricultural products, all the while having a clear view of their provenance and maturation.Protecting against bad actorsThen there’s the ability of blockchain-based sys-tems to stop bad actors and protect against any-thing from money laundering to child labor. The gold market is a case in point.“The reality is bad gold gets into the system and the industry knows it’s got to stop this from hap-pening,” says Matthew Keen, managing director and head of responsible gold trading at Emergent Technology. Its supply chain platform uses blockchain tech-nology to track gold from miners, where it’s tagged and sealed, and then through the chain to the refiners and vaults. In addition, the system uses what it calls its G-Coin, a digital certificate of title to responsibly sourced gold that is equal to one gram of gold. G-Coin tokens can be bought as an investment and moved easily to others to transfer wealth or make payments. Buyers also can redeem G-Coin tokens for physical gold.

Building upon IBM’s blockchain expertise and pow-ered by the Linux Foundation’s Hyperledger Fabric distributed ledger framework, the IBM Blockchain Platform is designed to allow network participants to append and view blockchain data based on their level of permissioning.Throughout a product’s life, technology vendors, service providers, and end users will be able to confirm the product’s provenance on the block-chain, which provides an immutable record of events. This can help reduce data loss, fraudulent products and warranty costs, while improving product assurance for customers during deploy-ment.“Blockchain technology can be extremely effec-tive in confirming provenance and authenticity of assets,” said Bruce Anderson, global managing director, electronics industry, IBM. “The ability to work with Seagate to combine blockchain with advanced cryptographic product identification technology is what sets this work apart, and sig-nals blockchain’s potential to reimagine the elec-tronics product life cycle management processes. Counterfeit electronic components are a global

issue that requires an ecosystem-wide effort to address.”The eID and Certified Erase capabilities are built on the Seagate Secure technology, which can enable higher levels of trust of product provenance and proof of data erasure. Customers can benefit from knowing that a drive is a genuine Seagate prod-uct and that any data on it can be securely erased which can assist customers with their efforts to adhere to international compliance standards.“IBM has a proven history of technology inno-vation as evidenced by its market leadership in blockchain technology for product provenance in various industries,” said Mark Re, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Seagate. “By combining Seagate’s innovations in product security with IBM’s blockchain expertise, we want to prove that we can help reduce the incidence of product counterfeiting in the future.”As project development continues in this com-bined effort to fight global product counterfeiting, Seagate and IBM are anticipating that they will expand the business network to include participa-tion from supply chain partners.

The Potential for Consumer Robotics in India

SonicWall Secures Hybrid Clouds by Simplifying, Enhancing Deployment for Enterprises, SMBs

Consumer Robots are robots which an aver-age citizen can make use of in his daily life. They do not look like humans, or even

industrial manipula-tors. But they make daily

l i v e s easy and better, and make little decisions on their own as they go about their chores. As in the case of vacuum clean-ing robots, which make a map of the room and clean the floor surface diligently, avoiding furniture, and automatically returning to their charging stations once they are done.India is country with a rich culture, includ-ing food culture. And as the Indian economy grows, the growing young population wants better comforts and still wants to enjoy their traditional food and life habits. This makes India an ideal market for consumer robotics, especially in the food processing segment. An average Indian has three meals a day, and the

The company also announced enhancements to the Capture Security Center with personalized Risk Meters that deliver company-specific, real-time threat intelligence and risk scoring, as well as Hyper-V, Azure and AWS support for its virtual firewall series.“Organizations are invested in hybrid cloud strat-egies where they’re able to harness the power of both public and private clouds, but they require solutions that help simplify and secure their cloud migration initiatives,” said SonicWall President and CEO Bill Conner. “Whether they are pursuing the benefits of a vendor’s specific capabilities, looking to reduce the cost of hiring staff or seeking to reach compliance standards, SonicWall helps protect their migration while simultaneously giving more visibility and control of their environments.”Reducing Cost with Zero-Touch DeploymentSonicWall Zero-Touch Deployment allows orga-nizations to quickly and securely configure fire-wall hardware at new locations without requiring advanced and costly on-site personnel. Once new products are brought online in remote locations, administrators can manage local and distributed

cuisine is time consuming. This is especially true in the case of dinner, when the whole fam-ily has an opportunity to eat together in peace, but generally the working adults who cook din-ner are tired. The challenge from an innovation and engineering perspective is in meeting the tough user requirements and price expecta-tions.Educational robot is another category which holds much potential in the Indian market. Indian parents are willing to go an extra mile to give a better education to their children. There are many startups working on educational robots that help learn STEM subjects through hands on experiments. Learning through robot-ics is very engaging for the child, and results are very visible.Household cleaning presents another opportu-nity. Though robotic vacuum cleaners are avail-able in the Indian market, adoption has been slow due to high price. Indians prefer to vac-uum clean and wet mop the floor. Due to envi-ronmental conditions a typical Indian home is

networks through a single pane-of-glass using Capture Security Center, SonicWall’s flagship cloud-based management and analytics SaaS plat-form.“We are very excited about the recent addition of Zero-Touch and SD-WAN from SonicWall. Cer-dant has been deploying SonicWall next-gener-ation firewalls for over 15 years and these new additions will allow us to deliver even faster deployments for customers,” said Cerdant Vice President of Technology and Operations Joshua Skeens. “The agile and simplified deployment capabilities will help reduce labor costs with cen-tralized cloud management.”To reduce wire clutter and the complexity asso-ciated with PoE injectors and switches, the com-pany is introducing SonicWall TZ300P and TZ600P unified threat management (UTM) firewalls that provide power directly to connected PoE/PoE+ enabled devices, such as wireless access points, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, printers, cameras and other IP devices.Leveraging Public Networks SecurelyWith strong and proven security provided by SonicWall, SD-WAN can be leveraged to use read-ily-available, low-cost public internet services to reduce the cost and complexity commonly asso-ciated with building distributed private networks based on MPLS technology.“SD-WAN is a highly effective technology for distributed organizations like retailers, banks, manufacturers and campuses to simultaneously improve performance and reliability while reduc-ing operational overhead,” said 451 Research ana-lyst Mike Fratto. “However, the use of the direct,

different from homes in western countries. A robotic vacuum cleaner developed for Indian conditions and sold by an Indian household brand at an affordable price could be a game changer.Among these, cooking robots have the high-est potential in my opinion. There are a host of startups working on cooking robots. In the next few years the consumer robotics market in India will see a flurry of new product launches, and a few acquisitions by major players. On top of the list will be products that make rotis and dosas – food that people prefer to eat hot and fresh, and are time consuming to prepare. The modern Indian homemaker is short of time to prepare a good and healthy meal, but prefers not to choose frozen, packaged food. Con-sumer robotics startups in India are attempting to address this gap and create a new product category which has the potential to become as commonplace as the kitchen mixer and find a place in every Indian home.

connected public internet for business opens up security challenges for organizations. For SD-WAN to be a viable alternative to private WANs, enterprises need to ensure they have the same level of inspection and enforcement at the branch and remote sites as they have at the data center. Integrated security features with SD-WAN are table stakes for most enterprises adopting the technology.”A new capability of SonicOS 6.5.3, the operating system for SonicWall next-generation firewalls, SonicWall Secure SD-WAN enables distributed organizations to safely deploy and connect branch and remote sites for sharing data, and enhancing the resiliency and performance of applications and services.SonicWall Secure SD-WAN ensures the consistent performance and availability of business-critical and SaaS applications with intelligent failover, application-based load balancing and quality of service (QoS) capabilities.Personalized Threat Intelligence, Risk ScoringThe rising growth of applications, endpoints, mobile devices and databases also means a larger attack surface for cybercriminals. To shrink it, the SonicWall Capture Security Center Risk Meters service provides enterprises and SMBs with data-driven analysis about evolving threat vectors that include networks, web, clouds, applications, end-points, mobile devices and databases.Because no two organizations are alike, SonicWall Risk Meters deliver personalized threat data and risk scores that are adapted to individual situa-tions and environments, promoting immediate and precise defensive actions.

DATA LOCALISATION IS GOOD BUT NEEDS DISTINCTION-CAIT

Security-as-code and security automation will be key in battling cyberattacks in the cloud era

In the wake of crucial issue of “data localisa-t i o n ” wherein the Reserve Bank o f India has directed the

Companies, Banks & other Institutions conducting activi-ties in India to store their respective data

secured from India within the Country, the

C o n - federation of All India Trad-ers (CAIT) has sought intervention of the Prime Minister to make distinction between such Companies or Institutions those who have real time data and others who use primary data for making transactions to happen. While extending its support to the Government and the RBI on its bold move towards protect-ing Indian citizens’ data and privacy by ensuring the data is stored within infrastructure in India, the CAIT has said that it will go a long way in moving India towards a data driven economy and the possibilities of misuse or unauthorised usage of data will be minimised. The CAIT has also sent copy of PM’s letter to RBI Governor, Finance Minister Shri Arun Jait-ley, Minister for IT Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP

CLOUDSEC India 2018, hosted by Trend Micro Incorporated, attracted more than 650 business and technology leaders this year, making it one of the most important cybersecurity conferences in India. During the event, Trend Micro highlighted security-as-code and security automation as two important trends defining the future of cyberse-curity. These two trends are in line with applica-tion development in the cloud computing era. By moving security into the early stages of the devel-opment lifecycle – or implementing DevSecOps,

President Shri Amit Shah & others. At a Press Conference held today at New Delhi, CAIT Secretary General Mr. Praveen Khandelwal said that in his communication to Prime Minister it is said that large variety of Institutions secure data for various purposes and therefore some sort of distinction needs to be made among such Companies or Institutions. Same Yardstick can not be applied for one and all in the larger inter-est of economy. Therefore, there is a need of a distinction to be made between entities which have access to personal data and those who use the data only for enabling commerce through activities for example like payments. In our considered view digital platforms (like Facebook, Amazon, Google etc) and Banks have access to personal consumer data such as name, address, contact details and other such know your customer ( KYC) data. This is used by entities above to provide their services. Such data should necessarily be stored in India to prevent any mis-use, including for political purposes. On the other side there are various Companies particularly the payment technology companies (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay) which only have a 16 digit card number which is stored with them, and as such that is not personally identifiable data

bugs can be discovered and fixed quickly before they make it to production.Trend Micro has seen tremendous growth in India this year, especially in its cloud security business, which now contributes to nearly 40% of its over-all revenue in the country. The company observes strong uptake of private cloud from the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector; and that of public cloud from manufacturing, e-com-merce, IT and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) sectors, and born-in-the-cloud businesses. New local cus-tomer acquisitions from 2017 to 2018 include the State Bank of India (SBI), the Syndicate Bank, Lupin Pharma, Bandhan Bank, PolicyBazaar, and Capillary Technologies, to name a few.Addressing the crowd, Nilesh Jain, Vice President, Southeast Asia and India, Trend Micro said, “India presents a huge and strategic opportunity for our business, and we will continue to invest in the country. In fact, early next year, we will be launch-

and should not be forced to be stored in India, as it does not serve any purpose with regards to law enforcement, or misuse.Mr. Khandelwal said that we have been strongly driving “digitization of payments” as an agenda for our small traders over the last five years. T Any move now to localize this payments data will nullify all of our efforts made over the past, and also bring in added risk and weaken the trust of our community with regards to digital trade. We would also like to state on record that such a move will cut us off from global fraud and security systems, which have provided immense value to our small traders by offering services like chargebacks, safety checks etc. which prevent any fraudulent transaction. The concept of data localization is also concern-ing to us from a payments technology standpoint, as the same has been promoted in the draft data privacy bill and the earlier ecommerce policy. The CAIT has urged the Prime Minister to ensure data localization is enforced strongly for banks and digital platforms and not towards financial data, which should not be classified as sensitive data, as that will also severely limit the develop-ment of the Indian fintech companies, along with the broader payments ecosystem.

ing a Certification Program in IT Security (CPITS) in India. The program aims to equip recent com-puter science graduates with hands-on experi-ence and skills, helping them kickstart a career in the cybersecurity industry with Trend Micro. We have successfully run CPITS in Egypt and Brazil, and India will be the first Asian testbed for this exciting initiative.”Celebrating its 30th anniversary this October, Trend Micro has always evolved with the indus-try and consistently expanded into new growth areas. Today, the company operates three major solution categories: hybrid cloud security, net-work defense, and endpoint security. At the same time, Trend Micro keeps a close pulse on emerg-ing threats with the help of its threat research teams located across the world. For the next ten years, the company’s mission is to secure the connected world, giving enterprises the agility and freedom for adopting new technologies.

To better guide business and security objectives in a more timely manner, computed risk scores and threat levels are continuously updated based on live threat data relative to existing defense capabilities. Organizations can leverage their scores when performing security effectiveness planning, policy and budgeting decisions.Virtual Firewall Extended to Cloud Deployments

The SonicWall Capture Cloud Platform contin-ues to deliver security for businesses of any size and now extends next-generation virtual firewall capabilities to cloud deployments, including Hyper-V, Azure and AWS, with the NSv Firewall Series. As an added benefit, new and existing customers using SonicWall NSa or NSsp next-generation fire-

Win-ners can stand a chance to win not just a title but a series of awards and prizes, appreciating their cricket abilities and the spirit of sports-manship, while motivating the community to indulge in active outdoor events to relive stress and improve bonding.
