I ••• "~/1••• ,., eye/ilil' • • •Among the many interesting Motor Cycles here today is the 1926 Rex AcmeBlackburn reputed to be the fastest Vintage machine in the 250 c.c. class. Thisclass should be dominated by the more modern Yamahas and the Parr Villiers.

Haydn Williams 350 c.c. Velorton is a regular competitor at Brighton and canexpect opposition from the Matchless of P. J. Minter and the two JapaneseHondas.

The 500 c.c. class should provide an interesting battle between the superchargedTriumph of John Camhi and the unblown Torquemada (Triumph engine) ofPhil Manzano and the Ron May Triumph. The Vintage Rudge of Alan Morganand the pre-war Geo. Cole Ariel are to interesting machines to watch.

Fierce competition will come from the machines in the 750 c.c. class, firstly fromthe standard production Triumphs Nos. 25 & 29 and the official works enteredNorton Atlas to be ridden by Des Heckle holder of several World Records forsprinting on his 250 C.c. Starmaker Villiers.

The racing machines of Don Bast, Dick Ansell, Tony Driscoll and Jack Terry, are all capable of the 100 m.p.h. average for the Kilo. The terminal speeds forDick, Tony and Jack at recent Ouxiord Kilo sprint were between 145-150m.p.h.

In the 1000 c.c. class Ian Ashwell on his Vincent Satan can be expected to tryand repeat last years performance at Brighton when he put up F.T.O. for motor-cycles, in a time of 19-3 sees. lan's best time for Kilo is 18-967 sees.

Interesting in the sidecar class will be the Imp engined "Impulse" a new outfitout for the first time as a sprint special. The Vincent of Mick Merrick who isthe current Hill Climb Champion should prove the fastest machine.

This Year's Event •••The Brighton National Speed Trials is the only event of its

kind in this country to have a fully automated timing and resultssystem. Two years ago a completely new automatic timing systemwas produced whereby drivers started in their own time after the'course clear' signal, and were timed from the moment they crossedthe start line.

Last year, the results system was modified. It has beenimproved further this year so that, instead of the results being readover closed circuit speakers to the competitors' results and pressenquiry caravans, they will be transmitted by teleprinters installedat the start and finish.

The teleprinters (model 54) have been loaned for this event byCREED & CO., whose main factory is located in Brighton.

T.-I.,'s C.mpetltoll ...Welcome to Brighton and the Brighton & Hove Motor Club's

Sixty Second Annual Speed Trials.Once again a full list of fast machinery will be competing for

the numerous Cups and cash Prizes. Chris Summers the car courserecord bolder is unfortunately not with us this year. Having givenup active competition in motor sport. This leaves the field wideopen for tbe title of uncrowned King of Madeira Drive. To namethe competitor who will put up the fastest time of day and collectthe £50 cheque at tbe finish is most difficult. If the weather isgood and the course dry and we sincerely hope that it is, there isno substitute for a large number of c.c, Harry Rose's Cooper inclass 18 has already performed well at Brighton but any of themany Lotuses and Coopers in class 17 may give him a close run. Many of these cars are powered by what are basically Ford andB.M.C. engines.

From past performance the favourite for F.T.D. must beRobert Beck's Jaguar Eagal in Class 9. This E. type Jaguar ispowered by a 7 litre Ford engine, and last year did a time of 23seconds with a terminal speed just short of 150 m.p.h. It is drivenagain by Geoffrey Richardson. John Wolfe, Sheby America Cobra,is similarly powered and may be even quicker.

An interesting entry in Class 4. is the Calypso racing divisionFord Lotus Cortina modified to full race tune by B.R.M. and withfuel jnjecticn, it is driven by Roger Clark, who has had manyInternational rally successes. He is probably more at home onrough forestry tracks and perhaps would be just about as quickalong the shingle on the beach as on the course. This car is alsodriven in Class JO by Jacqui Smith who raced with the Alan FraserImp team last year.

As usual there is a full list of 40 Bentleys of all vintages inClass 14.

Alan Allard, the son of Sidney Allard our late President, basentered his Ford G.T. Dragster. This car constructed speciallyfor Drag meetings is powered by a supercharged 1498 c.c. Fordengine but it is basically for tmile sprints and it may run out ofbreath over the kilometre. During the afternoon one or two otherDrag machines will give demonstration runs, these machines arenot eligible for any awards, but for those of you who have paddocktickets we suggest you have a closer look at them when they arestanding still. Many clever engineering ideas are incorporated inthem.

To go back to the event itself, there is a large turn out of Minisand Anglias all with highly modified engines and all of which willfor once be able to exceed Barbara Castle's 70 rn.p.h. limit witboutfalling foul of the Law. Each Year the performance of these carsbecomes more fantastic and it won't be long till they are in therunning for F.T.D.
