BRIGHTEN YOUR FUTURE WITH LED LANDSCAPE LIGHTING

• What are the benefits of LED lighting• What is an LED (light emitting diode)• What are the short comings of LED• Design considerations for LED• Cost comparisons of LED and incandescent

lighting

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

By Using LED Landscape Lighting, You Are Doing Your Part To Go Green!

Fewer fossil fuels are used in the manufacturing of LED’s than in incandescent lamps.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

• Energy $$$$ savings– Uses 1/3 of the energy per lumen compared to

incandescent lamps• Maintenance $$$$ savings

– No bulbs to be replaced

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

• Installation cost of the following items is lower– Wire - smaller size and less wire– Power console – fewer transformers and smaller

transformers– Labor – less labor designing system wire schemas and less

labor to install because of simplified wiring

• Disclaimer – The fixtures are generally more expensive than your typical landscape lighting fixture.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

• Easier to train your crews on installation techniques

• You will have happier customers• You will earn more profits and have a better

reputation, less call backs

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

• Bulbs, Lamps, Arc lamp, Beacon, Candle, Flame, Flare, Illuminator, Lantern, Taper, Torch, etc. What ever you call a Light Bulb LED’s don’t have them!

• LED life expectancy is 40,000 hrs. or 18 years at 6 hours on per night

WHAT IS AN LED

• L – light • E – emitting• D – diode

WHAT IS AN LED

WHAT IS AN LED

• Brief history of the LED– 1962 First practical LED (Holonyak, GE) 0.001 lumens

– 1960’s Red indicator LEDs

– 1970’s 7-segment displays

– 1980’s Green LEDs

– 1990’s “High brightness” blue (Nakamura, Nichia) 1 lumen

– 2000’s Illumination LEDs 100+ lumens100,000 times brighter than 1962

WHAT IS AN LED

• Solid State Lighting or SSL– semiconductor die or chip

– organically grown crystals

– “LED” – packaged device

WHAT IS AN LED light emitted forward

Heat Must be conducted away from LED!

WHAT IS AN LED

• Illumination LED’s in the raw produce a blue light

• White light is produced by coating the LED with phosphors of a yellow tone to produce a white light

• White light can also be produced using RGB mixing, expensive and complicated

WHAT IS AN LEDAn LED directly converts electricity into light.Apply a forward voltage Vf and current (mA) flows from p to n…

PITFALLS OF LED’S!

• Are they pitfalls or just new parameters?• New parameters mean CHANGE • Change tends to freak people out!

PITFALLS OF LED’S!

• Number one Pitfall - The diode does not like high temperatures, end of story.

PITFALLS OF LED’S!

PITFALLS OF LED’S!

• High initial price: LEDs are currently more expensive, price per lumen, on an initial capital cost basis, than most conventional lighting technologies.

35w MR16 Accent Light $84.00 MR16 35w bulb $5.008.5W LED Accent Light $182.50 LED Retro Lamp $37.00

LED MR16 LED MR16

PITFALLS OF LED’S!

• Ridged in post installation modifications

Foot Candles Beam Width

PITFALLS OF LED’S!

• High rate of malfunctions in outdoor fixtures.• A lot of manufacturers make bold claims that their bulbs

last 50,000 hours yet will only warranty them for 1-2 years.

• The color rendering of LED bulbs in a landscape setting can be less than desirable.

• Initial overall cost to retrofit is high vs. potential savings. (this gap is narrowing quickly and may be non relevant already)

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

• Voltage Drop– Each LED manufacturer has a different range for

acceptable voltage for lights to work properly – 7 to 18 volts on the extremes– 9 to 15 volts on average

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

• Wire size– We can use smaller wire size for the same number

of fixtures with equivalent light output.– 12AWG wire can handle 192 watts at 12 volts

• Equals five 35W incandescent fixtures

• Equals fifteen 12.2VA LED fixtures

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

• Wire lengthT 64ft

369ftT

175 W MR16

12.2VA LED

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

• You can mix LED and incandescent– LED accent lights with incandescent path lights

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

• No bulbs to change with LED’s

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

• LED lights tend not to draw insects

SUMMERY

• LED is coming to age• It is a green product in its manufacturing, Its

life cycle and its energy consumption• Benefits out weigh the pitfalls• Selection, quality and variety of fixtures is

increasing rapidly• Cost effective in the long run

SUMMERY

• Easy to design and install• Less call backs for repairs from customers• Don’t buy cheep or low cost LED’s they will

cost you an arm and a leg when its all said and done.

• Retrofit bulbs are worth looking at and will continue to improve with time
