1. Success Story Groundswell funding helps school projects, from Forum, November 25, 2013 Funding for Groundswell will help environmental projects con nue at area schools. Groundswell, housed in the College of Educa on, is an ini a ve to help young people learn about the Great Lakes and local watershed systems and become ac ve stewards of the environment. The program helps students and teachers collaborate with local organiza ons to address environmental issues in their communi es. Groundswell has received renewal funding from the Great Lakes Stewardship Ini a ve (GLSI) for $145,000 with a local match of $136,975. The grant will provide funding for opera ons, professional development for teachers, and area school projects. Groundswell also received a Na onal Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra on B‐WET grant of $70,000 with a local match of $86,762. This grant will allow the Forest Hills Public School District to expand Groundswell to seven schools. It will also help accomplish mapping of school property and the planning of new uses of the property to cut maintenance costs and improve the environmental quality and usefulness of the land. Grand Rapids Public School’s CA Frost Environmental Academy will use its funding for in‐depth restora on work around the school, at Blandford Nature Center and in downtown Grand Rapids. Groundswell also received a Baldwin Founda on grant for $9,000 over two years. Since 2008, Groundswell has worked with 17 schools to develop service‐learning projects, involving nearly 1,500 students each year.

MAREC hosts discussion on river barge access in Muskegon, from GVNow, December 6, 2013 A discussion to propose allowing river barges access to the port of Muskegon took place at Grand Valley’s Michigan Alterna ve and Renewable Energy Center December 6. The Michigan Agri‐Business Associa on (MABA) and a group of business leaders, including government agencies, marine transport businesses and state and local‐elected officials,
gathered to discuss the opportuni es a river barge would bring, such as economic development. Arn Boezaart, director of MAREC, said suppor ng this ini a ve aligns with MAREC’s mission of suppor ng and advancing economic development for the Lakeshore region, as well as the renewable energy sector. He said that in addi on to serving the transporta on needs of the Michigan agricultural sector, many other transporta on needs could be served. “This would also be a key asset in a rac ng the future development of the renewable energy industry. For example, commercial wind turbine blades, towers and related components con nue to become bigger, longer and heavier. Having a modern barge shipping terminal to support an emerging industry like commercial scale wind would place West Michigan in a very compe ve posi on,” said Boezaart. Jim Byrum, president of MABA, said the Port of Muskegon is well‐posi oned to act as a hub for shipping, including agricultural bulk cargoes such as fer lizer and grain, because the basic infrastructure is already in place. The U.S. Coast Guard is in the process of reviewing MABA’s request for limited river barge access to the sec on of Lake Michigan between Chicago and Muskegon. Farewell, Angela! OSP’s fall semester graduate assistant, Angela Mason, will not return for the winter semester. Angela was offered a New Account Development/Volunteer Coordinator posi on with the Na onal Relief Network in Greenville, MI. She will start this posi on in January, just before she graduates in April. Disaster relief has been a significant interest of Angela’s since the first semester of her MSW program when she went on a service learning trip to New Orleans, LA. She is excited to begin her professional career path, but will miss working in OSP. Angela would like to express her gra tude to the OSP staff and GVSU faculty she had a chance to work with during this semester. She will take what she learned through OSP into her future career development. If anyone who has been working with Angela needs grant search assistance, please contact Shirley Dilworth at 1‐6826. She will priori ze grant search requests and save them for the new graduate assistant, who will be coming onboard in the winter semester. Angela would also like to wish everyone a great holiday break before the winter semester!

NIH and NSF Focus on Neuroscience Research, from GrantWeek, December 2, 2013
The Na onal Ins tutes of Health (NIH) and the Na onal Science Founda on (NSF) announced projects that demonstrate a renewed commitment to neuroscience. These efforts are largely complimentary, with NIH focusing on increasing awareness of and par cipa on in neuroscience research and NSF emphasizing support for innova ve research that integrates mul ple academic fields.
NIH plans to reissue a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) early next year for a neuroscience research educa on program focused on undergraduates. This ini a ve will support the development of collabora ve research educa on partnerships (research‐intensive and primarily undergraduate) to increase par cipants’ awareness and interest in the neurosciences. The FOA is expected to be published late February 2014 with an applica on due date in May 2014. The new FOA will be part of NIH’s Blueprint for Neuroscience Research and is expected to con nue the overarching objec ve of the original FOA.
NSF has released a cogni ve neuroscience program solicita on for proposals aimed at advancing a rigorous understanding of how the human brain supports thought, percep on, ac on, social processes, and other aspects of cogni on and behavior, including how such processes develop and change in the brain and through me. The full proposal target dates are accepted annually on February 25 and August 27.
Report Offers Lessons for Regional Economic Development, from GrantWeek, December 2, 2013
A new report, jointly issued by the Knight Founda on and the Fund for Our Economic Future, chronicles the lessons learned from the Fund’s efforts to encourage economic development across Northeast Ohio through a collabora on of over fi y grant‐makers, ins tu ons of higher learning, businesses, non‐profits, and government. The Fund was ini ated in 2004 with 28 founding members who commi ed a total of $30 million over three years to begin restoring regional economic compe veness through pooled grant‐making, research and convening. According to the Knight Founda on, “By the end of 2012, the Fund’s efforts had contributed to more than 12,000 new jobs, nearly $400 million in new payroll generated through new businesses, and almost $2.2 billion in new capital to sustain exis ng businesses and grow new economic ac vity.” The report offers six lessons that may be of interest to colleges and universi es ge ng involved in regional economic development efforts:
Advance research to forge consensus about priori es and approaches;
Encourage mul ple ins tu ons to work together on grant proposals, leading to new rela onships and shared strategies;
Build a public mandate by keeping ci zens informed;
A ract private sector partners to execute, not just inform, the strategy;
Capitalize and shape the work of exis ng regional intermediaries;
Staff the collabora ve with core strategic competencies.
Access the full report for an in depth examina on of the Fund’s efforts and for case studies illustra ng each
of the lessons learned.

3. Grants Resource Center News, con nued NSB Mee ng Announces Con nued Support for NNIN, from GrantWeek, December 16, 2013
As a result of the October shutdown of the federal government, the Na onal Science Board (NSB) held an
abbreviated board mee ng at the Na onal Science Founda on (NSF) on November 21, 2013. Two program
ini a ves were discussed: the NSB Antarc c Site Visit and the Na onal Nanotechnology Infrastructure
Network (NNIN). With respect to the Antarc c Site Visit, NSB expressed general approval of the program's
strategic objec ve and goals. The NNIN program report indicated NSF's desire to con nue the program with
an ac on item in February 2014 to support one new network despite the agency's earlier inten on to close
the program.
Currently, Stanford University serves as the lead on the NNIN, which includes par cipa on from over 200
academic ins tu ons (many of which are small to medium‐sized ins tu ons), 5,000 academic users (largely
graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduates), and 80 small companies. Over 3,000
publica ons, patents, and patent applica ons have been produced over the programs' 10‐year grant cycle.
NSF es mates that 20 percent of all Ph.D. physical scien sts have been involved with the NNIN, and there is
interest in partnering with the Na onal Ins tute of Standards and Technology to expand involvement of
other federal agencies in the program.
Higher Ed Associa ons Cri que Current Patent Legisla on, from GrantWeek, December 16, 2013
The higher educa on community has voiced its concerns with the Innova on Act, (HR 3309), passed by the
House on December 5. In a statement released last week, the major higher educa on associa ons concerned
with research in educa on indicated that, despite having worthy goals, the Innova on Act "failed to meet
the balance between reducing abusive li ga on prac ces and preserving the strength of patents." In the
same le er, the associa ons voiced their support for the Senate's bill, Patent Transparency and
Improvements Act of 2013, (S. 1720), saying it is "effec vely focused on curbing abusive patent li ga on
prac ces while preserving the ability of patent holders to effec vely enforce their patent rights."
