If necessity inspires invention, by the same token,

discontent can power ambition. There is no better

example of an individual being driven to achievement

than Mohamad Khairi Ambran, one of the founders

of Khairi Consult. The secret to his success is his high

expectations, be it of the people who work with him

or the tasks that he undertakes. Mohd Khairi holds

dear to the principle that there is always room for

improvement. Indeed, it was this “discontent” that

drove him to leave a cosy and secure engineer’s job

with the Works Department to start out Khairi Consult.

It was this unquenchable need for excellence that

has charted the course of the company and taken

it to newer levels with each passing year. With

Khairi in the driver’s seat, greater growth is on the

horizon for this company which now ranks amongst

the top engineering consultancies in the country.

For someone who believes that even perfection has

room for improvement, such an expectation is not

unrealistic.

“Because it is there”, to quote a famous retort, is

absolutely the most fitting description of the mettle that

is Manan Amir. Manan is a man who defines his life

by the milestones he has traveled. For him, nothing

is unachievable unless one has really tried. A roads

and highways specialist, Manan left the civil service

to venture into business to test his ability, something

that he was not at liberty to do in the safe working

environment of the Works Department where he

worked for a good 14 years. In 1994, together with

his friend Khairi, they started Khairi Consult. The rest

is history. Over the years, Manan has enjoyed great

fulfillment through being able to transfer his ideas and

concepts into reality. The joy of accomplishment,

the gratitude of a satisfied client, the growth of the

company’s project portfolio – these have encouraged

and enabled him to continue to “test” his ability -

with beneficial consequences. The improved personal

financial resources have enabled him to perform more

charity as a way of giving something back to society.

Unassuming and thoroughly approachable, Manan is

a true people’s person. He is regarded by the many

community associations in which he is involved in as

an invaluable friend and supporter. He is revered by

his employees as a benevolent boss and friend. He is

highly valued by his clients as a dependable person

who always delivers the goods. Among his peers, he is

a joy to work with and a treasure to have on the team -

the engine that powers the company.

The Driving Force

Azmi Jamaludin is a person who is driven solely by

job satisfaction. One can argue that such idealism

is no longer in vogue today. Not for Azmi. For him,

the satisfaction of seeing a job executed to plan and

expectation is all the reward he needs. Given the

immense contributions he has made to academia, Azmi

would have made a name as a teacher in an institution

of higher learning. And it is not because he can’t but

rather because he doesn’t have the time, that has kept

him from a possibly successful alternative career path.

Teaching, it is popularly joked, is for those who can’t.

Azmi can and he does it better than anybody. In 1995,

prompted by his need to challenge himself, Azmi left

the civil service to join Khairi Consult. He found life

in the business environment to be very gratifying. For

him the customer’s satisfaction at the end of each

project is both a reward and a gauge for his work. He

is known in the by colleagues and peers by a number

of names which include Mr. Fix–it, Trouble shooter ,

the hands-on guy and a number of equally flattering

nicknames which all mean the same thing – he gets

the job done. Even though Azmi is always in the thick

of work, he is never too busy to find time to continue

with his academic discourses and writing. He is a

firm believer of sharing, especially when it comes to

ideas. He lives by the philosophy that an idea shared

does not impoverish the giver. It enriches both parties.

This is the attitude that has steered him throughout his

business career.

The Projects and Studies Department was set up in 1999 to supplement Khairi Consult’s existing services. Its function was to undertake all preliminary studies relating to the existing services being offered by the firm. It also offers research facilities and studies wherever required thus expanding the firm’s scope of services.

Scope of Services The department is primarily a one-stop centre for feasibility studies, research and analysis on projects being undertaken by Khairi Consult. It also offers its research services to parties which require independent evaluation and assessment relating to feasilibility, costs and project implementation. Geotechnical Engineering Department

At Khairi Consult, geotechnical engineering goes beyond the conventional realm of ensuring that the ground is safe and stable for construction. A new challenge in engineering is the growing demand for superstructures. Such challenges are made more formidable by having to work with less than suitable ground, including reclaimed land from the sea shores. Finding solutions to these new challenges is what keeps Khairi Consult at the vanguard of the industry. Its expertise is often sought in exploring possibilities of construction in reclaimed land, in tunneling and embankment reinforcement to support highway construction, and in seeking new and creative ways for soil stabilization and foundation reinforcement.

Structural Engineering Department

Using structural analysis techniques and conforming to design specifications and local design codes, the department has been able to create solutions that fulfil functional, aesthetic and safety requirements, time and again.

Building DepartmentThe key to Khairi Consult’s success in this field is its ability to closely with the architect. The extent of collaboration is often dependent on how structurally simple or complex a structure is.
