Abstraction refers to art unconcerned with the literal depiction of things from the visible world,it can however refer to an object or image of the real world
Expressionism is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective , expressing meaning or emotional experience in order to evoke moods or ideas
The name is derived from the combination of the emotional intensity and self denial of German ‘’ Expressionists”, with the anti figurative aesthetics of European art schools such as Futurism, Bauhaus, Cubism etc.
• During the second world war a lot of European artists migrated to America
• After the war Europe struggled to recover ,yet slow moving society was rapidly changing new machines-the automobile, airplane, telephone were growing and so were poverty, overpopulation, unemployment etc.
• These events produced a general sense of anxiety, tension, alienation etc.
• Thus there was a need of self expression, as a result of the political and social changes taking place in Europe
• This led to the starting of an art movement with New York as its epicentre.
