Clapham South has all the advantages of
being so close to the wide green spaces of the
common, but is most definitely at the quieter
end of town, with families continuing to settle
down here as a result. It is, in fact, the heart
of suburban Clapham, with row upon row of
residential back streets disguised by genteel
high streets with independent boutiques, with
not a chain in sight.
Balham Hill might be the gateway to
the area, with its Northern line tube and
other general amenities, but exit towards
the common and laid-back bars with great
gardens make for perfect summertime
drinking dens. The residential streets behind
are typified by red-brick Victorian and
Edwardian terraces turned into duplexes or
retained as chunky family homes.
Follow the maze of streets to nearby
Abbeville Road, where the Douglas and
Gordon offices are located, and the areas
rumoured village atmosphere is brought to
the fore. An independent vets practice sits
alongside locally-run DIY stores, the excellent
Fromagerie cheese shop and firm favourite
The Abbeville, which serves up refined,
modern European food (try the fresh tortelloni
with gorgonzola and walnut or braised squid
with chipotle sauce).
Towards the other end of Abbeville Road
is Clapham Common tube, where Carmen
Bar De Tapas has been cooking up authentic
Spanish cuisine since the nineties. There are
also plenty of cafs and bars in the Clapham
Old Town district. Between the streets of
beautiful, tall, bay-fronted red-brick homes are
dotted several primary schools, which have
received great ratings in recent years.

If an afternoon on the terraces is more your
thing than shopping or lunching, then there are
two Premiership football clubs located in Fulham

A very English setting it may be, a stones throw
from the majestic Royal Albert Hall, the Orangery
of Kensington Palace (a nice spot for afternoon tea)
and the white-fronted, palatial residences of Palace
Gardens. However, were still in London and there are
plenty of great finds from further afield, such as local
favourite Ranoush Juice, serving up hearty Lebanese
fare, or the excellent Yashin Sushi on Argyll Road.
Its also where Yotam Ottolenghi set up one of his
first cafs on tiny Holland Street. And, of course, there
are a number of smart-yet-intimate pubs dotted
about. Just off the beaten track sits local favourite, TheAbingdon, a very popular Friday night and Sunday
lunch spot serving elegant food and jazzy cocktails to
a smart crowd.
Head west to the white stucco villas of Holland
Park and get lost in the walled gardens and woods
where, every summer, the sounds of the countrys best
voices can be heard at the annual Opera Holland Park.
