CONSTRUCTED AT CHAINAGE KM 549+608 to 549+649

TEST LOCATION: SPAN 12 (40.48m) Box girder

1.0 GENERAL

The load testing on a newly constructed elevated Highway at Chainage Km

549+608 to 549+649 was taken up by the Department of Civil Engineering,

Bangalore University, Bangalore 560 056. The load test was conducted

from 16th August 2013 to 21st August 2013 in presence of the representatives

2.3. Procedure for testing:

1. Inspection of the deck shall be made before the commencement of the

test and the observations regarding the presence of cracks are recorded.

2. The location for the measurement of deflection (dial gauge locations)

are selected in consultation with client and marked. The areas below

these locations are prepared for no settlement condition.

3. The dial gauges are fixed in position by Suspension wire method as per

IRC: SP:51 1999. The time and temperature are recorded at this

initial condition.

incremental loading, the bridge deck shall be inspected

carefully.

ii. The targeted load (100% load) shall be maintained for 24

hours and during this period the deflection and

temperature are recorded after every one hour during the

day and 2 hour during the night.

iii. After 24 hours the final readings are recorded and the

deflection is calculated.

iv. The test load is released the same steps as that of loading

(100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 50%, 30% and 0) and the

deflection and temperature readings are recorded 2 hours

after the release of each increment of load (after the

three locations viz., at the mid span, at 0.25L from each support on either

edge of the segmant. The deflection readings were recorded at intervals as

specified in the Methodology both during loading and unloading.

2.5 Measurement for Temperature correction:

To account for the effect of temperature variation, the temperature and the

deflection of the identical span (span between Pier 13 and Pier 14) is

measured along with the measurement taken on the loaded span between Pier

12 and 13. The deflection of Span selected for temperature correction due to

temperature variation is measured at times whenever the deflection of the

loaded span is measured. The difference between the deflection of two spans

gives the actual deflection due to applied load ie.,

3.0 Test Results

The Load test results are presented in Table.1.

a) No cracks or spalling of concrete was observed during both loading and

unloading cycles

b) The following is the maximum corrected deflection / Recovery at various

locations of the girder under 100% loading and unloading
