Christmas is a birthday cele- bration. Christmas Day is the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and with it Christianity. Celebrations are usually a time of enjoyment and of giving thanks. Shops come alive as people search for gifts for friends, during the build up to Christmas, and much of the joy is in the buy- ing and giving as it is in the receiving of gifts. When we celebrate our own birthdays we are simply celebrating another year of our lives. This tradition was enhanced when three wise men, ‘The Magi’ called to wish the baby Jesus and his parents well, and to bestow gifts on the baby. Not United Kingdom, norCanada, nor the UnitedStates of America, ‘land ofthe free and home of thebrave’, have compulsoryvoting. Their election commentariesrecently focused on ‘lowvoter turnout’ as a sign ofdisillusion with the mainpolitical parties and disen-chantment with the Parlia-

mentary system. What have the commenta-tors been saying about theSaturday 29 November 2014Victorian State election re-sults?Do they give weight to com-pulsory voting? Victoria led the way in 1924or 1926, whichever Googleentry you prefer, followedby New South Wales andTasmania in 1928, WestAustralia in 1936, and SouthAustralia, always a specialcase, in 1942. Federally,Australia has had compulso-ry voting since 1912. TheAboriginal Referendum of1949 gave the vote toAboriginal people but notcompulsory for all votersuntil 1984. Interesting dates, but why did it happen? I willbe boning up on whatAustralian historians have tosay and let you know soon.

Heathcote U3A activitiesThe Redesdale communityhas progressed plans todevelop a feasibility study toinvestigate turning the Rede-sdale Hall and recreationalreserve into a multi-function-al community hub. City of Greater BendigoCommunity DevelopmentOfficers Glynn Jarrett andAndrew Plant met withRedesdale residents duringOctober to workshop ideason how best to compile a listof the community’s top goalsfor the project. This meeting formed thebasis of a brief sent out seek-ing expressions of interestfrom consultants to under-take the study. A round table discussion anda prioritising exercise re-vealed the group’s top goalswere to: review the architec-tural drawings originallymade for the reserve whenthe oval was developed;upgrade the sporting pavil-ion, facilities, and generalsurrounds of the AgnesMudford reserve; updatefacilities at the hall includingthe kitchen, storage, providerooms for communityoffices, visiting specialists, tourist information, land-

scape surrounding grounds, and to improve the street-scape of Redesdale. It is expected the consul-tant’s work will not be limit-ed to these goals, because thefeasibility study will likelyexplore new perspectives.Seven residents were nomi-nated as key communicatorsto pass information to andfrom the consultant andassist in contacting residentsand groups. Members of the committeeare Kathy Hall; Redesdaleand District Association;Carolyn Boyd, RedesdaleHall Committee; AndrewCampbell, farming; DonWhite Redesdale CFA; Glor-ia Pocock, community; IvanHuston, Recreation Reserve;and Andrew Plant, City ofGreater Bendigo. “There’s a Ferrari. Beg pardonit’s a Lotus.” Such is life drivingwith my mate who sold and val-ued cars for 40 years, nowenjoying those days throughcars he sees on the road in

Heathcote and on the way toMelbourne. He loves the oldfilms for the cars. “Look at thatSilver Shadow Rolls Royce. Abeautiful car.” We always watch“Poirot” for the cars and“Downtown Abbey” was a treat.Down the street in Heathcote hespies “a 1950 Dodge Ute, prob-ably an import. The colour iscalled Inca Gold.” He carefullyexamines the back of an Audi as

we are driving past Latrobe Uni-versity. Pointing to minor dis-crepancies on each side which Icannot see, he thinks the backleft hand panel would reduce thesale price. “There’s a 1966Holden. A beautiful car I re-member when I started selling.”He recognises a “Yankee” Chr-ysler and reflects that he neversold a Skoda so would not knowhow to value them.

Then there was a Humber SuperSnipe with no plates. “I had a’59 model but the better bodymodel was in ’62.” My mateknows everyone in Heathcoteby their cars. “He’s got a bigSkoda and she’s got a littleSkoda, keeping it in the family.”We watch the big sand trucksgoing through to Bendigo; wethink for the new hospital build-ing.

We heard one brass band inthe RSL Hall, Heathcote andthen six bands in theBendigo Capital Theatre, onSunday 23 November. Time was when Heathcoteand every small town aroundVictoria had a band.Band numbers have reducedto a few.We have Bendigo andDistrict Concert Band, Ben-digo Youth Brass, MaristBrothers Band, EaglehawkCitizens’ Brass Band,Thompson’s Foundry Bandfrom Castlemaine, and theCity of Greater BendigoBrass Band.

We were reminded of thefilm ‘Brassed off’ andLiverpool football club sing-ing that famous band num-ber at each game. It was good to feel part of along tradition, 100 years andmore for some of the bandsand some players approach-ing their centenary alongsidethe youngsters taking up thechallenge. We tapped our feet andswayed to the familiar tunes, none more so than an elderlyman in a wheelchair in spacereserved for him. There was a boy with a dis-

ability rising to his feet, andeven a 10 week old babycradled in the arms of par-ents. We heard ‘A String ofPearls’ and ‘The DamBusters’, among the firstnumbers. There were the unusual‘Game of Thrones’, and‘Smoke on the water’, witheach band providing varietywithin the bracket and notoverlapping with other gr-oups. The EaglehawkCitizens’ Brass Band, wasgiven the accolade of ‘themost entertaining’, with

conductor Ron Moore mov-ing his body with expressivegestures for light and shade.‘Breezin’ down Broadway’.They played many familiarnumbers and a memory frommy mate’s Saturday nightdancing days. “I used to jive to that one,”he said. Then there was a completechange of mood with ‘Allthrough the night’. We are fortunate to be livingin Heathcote with only ashort trip through our ‘sun-burnt country’ for such adelightful offering and itwas free.

The bands have played on - and on

$2000 from Dinner Plus Talk night

By Louise Joy

Redesdale’s first dinner and talk wasattened by more than 70 people onFriday 21 November. The talk was about the new BendigoHospital.Project officer Catina Eyers, explainedthe progress and status of the new hos-pital and answered a host of questions.Catina then mingled with guests at thetables.

The Hall was decorated with bows ofeucalypts, huge vases of native flowers, and some excellent local art that soldwell on the night. To begin their meal, guests were treatedto tasting plates of local produceincluding olives, sesame-glazed wal-nuts, beetroot dip, and hummus, allmade locally. Slow-cooked and pulled Windomal

Farm lamb with olive oil, red wine, andoregano jus served with couscous andsalad followed. Orange and lemon pudding with home-made lemon ice-cream finished themeal. The organisers recognised the generouscontributions of many local familiesincluding Yalookaridge, RedesdaleEstate, Windomal, Riverslea,Boonderoo, Coliban Springs, MountLofty, and especially Rocklands to theproduction of the meal. This was eitherby way of food, cooking, or tableware. The event raised almost $2000 for theRedesdale and District communitychest and it was announced at the din-ner that the Redesdale and DistrictAssociation had undertaken to fund theRedesdale Mia Mia Primary Schoolswimming program for the next threeyears from these funds. It is hoped the Dinner plus Talks willcontinue next year and the DistrictAssociation is hopeful people willcome forward with suggestions for top-ics and speakers. Dogs at large are a big problem Several repeated incidentsof dogs escaping proper-ties led to dog owner pros-ecutions in the KynetonMagistrate’s Court.Repeat offenders includedthe owner of aStaffordshire terrier thatattacked another dog inRomsey causing seriousinjury. The dog was previouslyinvolved in an attack on asheep. Fines, impoundment, andcourt costs to the ownerwere more than $3000.Macedon Ranges Councilsought a destruction orderfrom the Magistrate, whoruled the dog instead wasto be declared dangerousand kept in an enclosure.

The Magistrate will order thedog’s destruction if it es-capesagain.Two other court mattersinvolved dogs escaping theirproperties on multiple occa-sions. In one case the dog escaped theproperty seven times within aten month period. In the other case, the dog es-caped the property five timeswithin a four month period. The owners were fined $1736and $1161 respectively andordered to pay council courtcosts. The Judicial Registrar or-deredthat the owners carry out worksto the satisfaction of Council toensure their dogs could notescape.Council will also have addition-

al powers to seize their dogs ifthey are found at large again.Macedon Ranges CouncilManager of Community Safety,Anne-Louise Linder, said 80per cent of dog attacks in publicplaces could be prevented if alldogs were adequately confined. “By securing your dog, you arealso keeping it safe from traffic, injuries, or fights with otherdogs.“Yards must have a closed gate, and an escape-proof fence. The use of electronic collarconfinement systems are notsufficient,” she said.Further information is availableat:-mrsc.vic.gov.au or at the coun-cil service centres.

Macedon Ranges Farmers’ Markets

Seventeen needle grass war-riors met at Barfold onSaturday 15 November towalk through field trial plotswith Chilean Needle Grassand Texas Needle Grassexpert Dr Charles Grech. Most were members ofCampaspe Valley Landcareand Langley Landcare.Dr Grech established theplots on a property owned byRay Shea, and fronts theCampaspe River. Texas Needle Grass previ-ously covered the paddock. After grazing and spraying, the area was sown to rye andclover, with forage brassica,in different amounts. No fertilizer was added.Elders supported the projectby supplying herbicide andseed. Texas Needle Grasswas hardly to be seen in thepaddock. Dr Grech avoided sprayingthe paddock with

flupropanate, an acceptedchemical for needle grasses, due to longevity in the soiland other factors. The forage brassica hasgrown successfully and cat-tle are now allowed in tograze.Further experimentation willtake place on the area. The trials and field day werefunded by Campaspe ValleyLandcare in a bid to raiseawareness of the weed and toexperiment with eradicationin a riverfront situation. Trials have been held else-where, such as Holbrook, butsoils and conditions may dif-fer from those in our area.Landowners along theCampaspe River havereported a huge increase inTexas Needle Grass, espe-cially after flooding in 2010and 2011. The weed is now aserious problem, both hereand in Malmsbury and

Taradale, as well as otherplaces in Victoria. CampaspeValley Landcare has justreceived notification of asuccessessful grant applica-tion to assist with field days, more trials, workshops, spray units and booklets toassist landowners with iden-tification and eradication. The group hopes to halt the

spread of this and other exot-ic stipoid grasses such asChilean Needle Grass.
