Bridge Communities, Inc.

A s 2010 begins, Bridge Communities is looking beyond the multiple headlines of 2009 that told us the most vulnerable of

our communities’ residents were about to struggle further because they were losing jobs while at the same time many social service organizations available to help them were being forced to make cuts in their programs.

From newspapers to news programs to every day American citizens sharing their stories, the dramatic downturn of the United States economy has been on the minds of people all over the world. These are challenging times and everyone understands that every revenue stream is being stretched and/or eliminated, and ironically, now is the time all social service organizations are needed the most.

DuPage County organizations have not been immune to the effects of this economy. Everyone is working with less revenue to meet the chang-ing needs of our fellow neighbors. This past year, we have received a 15% increase in the number of calls for help from families in a housing crisis. According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, 52% of donors planned to decrease their giving in 2009 and so the negative effects of the economy on nonprofit organizations have deepened consider-ably in the last year.

Many years ago, Bridge made the decision to diversify funding sources in order not to rely heavily on one particular revenue stream. This has helped during these challenging times. In addition to the sound financial decisions made by Bridge then and the proactive approach we con-tinue to take, we will stay steadfast in our mission to help homeless families work hard to overcome obstacles to become financially independent and sustain housing.

As we all struggled during the past year, 103 new donors discovered the value of Bridge’s

mission. They pro-vided a lifeline for homeless families in DuPage County. Together we cre-ated a path that led nearly 103 families to a brighter future. Support-ers, both new and repeat, showed confidence in our Program model that partners a client fam-ily, volunteer mentors and professional case manager. These 103 new donors joined a “family” of nearly 2,000 fellow neighbors, friends and community leaders committed to Bridge’s mission and model.

Bridge is incredibly thankful to the gener-ous donors and community partners. “We have been amazed by our donors as they continue to give what they can. We have read notes includ-ed in contribution envelopes in which donors share their own personal struggles, but state that now more than ever they believe it is important to support Bridge. They too have experienced, at whatever level, the hardships of this recession,” said Mark Milligan, president and co-founder of Bridge Communities. “Every donation, large and small, will help us through this tough recession. We feel assured that as the economy improves our donors will continue to find it in their hearts to support our work.” This steadfast support from our donors has carried over to our Program Partners so that, even in their own troubling times, they continue to commit the resources (both financial and volunteer) needed to meet

the ever-growing challenges of client families. Bridge Communities has a compelling story to tell about fam-ily homelessness in our community, coupled with client outcomes that provide long term return on your investment. The United Way DuPage

I love to dance. I truly love to dance. I could definitely “dance the night away”. I don’t just mean, free style dancing, which I indeed like to do. I mean your old fashion ball-room dancing, like the waltz, fox trot, cha cha, rumba, salsa, tango. I especially love the waltz, with its free flowing style of long graceful gliding steps. It is almost like skat-ing. However, my dancing soul comes most alive with any of the latin dances like the rumba

which is really an earthy foxtrot, concentrating ones focus on more of a Cuban hip motion. But top on my list, without hesitation is the tango. I am drawn to the drama of the dance with its contrasts of slow smooth long deliberate steps, combined with sudden turns and quick and sometimes intricate footwork. Thank goodness I love to dance because I can safely say that for any non profit organization this year it has been a year of “dancing with uncertain-ty”. We have all been jostled to and fro in this eco-nomic tempest. Many non profits, delivering critical services to persons in need - in every community across our state - have been confronted with more persons in need and fewer resources to provide, especially if they were dependent on state funding. The past year has been a perfect storm of less fund-ing to alleviate more need. News headlines have been filled with cuts in services to those seeking help with basic needs, including food and shelter.

Letter from the Editor in ChiefThere has been no waltzing for us here at

Bridge Communities this year. It has been more like a tango. We have continued our deliberate steady steps of helping homeless families in need, but we have had to be ready for quick turns when funders have decreased grant funding or when other community organizations with reduced revenues couldn’t support us. However, our deliberate steps of having little operating dependency on govern-ment grants served us well. Our wonderful donors gave generously based on their ability this year and for this we are incredibly grateful. Our development staff displayed intricate footwork of putting together a triple match for our spring campaign that obvi-ously brought a great return on each dollar donated. We did not need to reduce much needed services or professional staff!

This “dance with uncertainty” was reflected in our work with our homeless families who in the best of financial times are buffeted about. We found Bridge serving more families who had previously owned a home and lost it due to job loss. Our employment director and all our case managers, program partners and mentors worked tirelessly to find jobs, additional training and resources to help families get back on their feet. The children in our program continue to work hard academically with the help of our tutoring program and we awarded 8 scholarships to college bound students.

Ginger Rodgers once reflected that she had to do everything that Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels. All I can say is, thank goodness I like to dance. Thank you for partnering in our ef-forts here at Bridge. God bless!

Dear Editor:I want to thank you all for everything your ministry has done for my family. When I initially made the phone call (to Bridge), I had just about lost all hope, and was not sure what was going to happen to us. Homelessness has been a very humbling, and trying time for my family, and yet you have lifted most of the burden off my shoulders. You allowed me to renew hope and hold my head high once again. I am empowered to strive towards my goal of regain-ing my financial independence. Although at times I will admit it was extremely difficult to see the “how and why,” I am eternally grateful to my mentors for their tireless efforts, the time they take away from their own families to help my family, their concern and compassion and their love and support. I will graduate from College of DuPage this spring, with my associates in Human Services and two certifi-cates: Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. I could have never done it without the help of all of you at Bridge. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for that you do!

Blessings, Jill S. and family

bridge Communities is a dynamic, holistic, grassroots non-profit or-ganization committed to transforming the lives of homeless families through meaningful partnerships with community-based agencies and

individuals. The program of housing, mentoring and empowering families focuses on moving them towards a goal of self-sufficiency.

Self-sufficiency, for the purposes of Bridge Communities’ Transitional Housing Program is defined as the ability to:

• Maintain permanent stable housing• Maintain stable employment• Manage finances and budget• Manage personal debt

Bridge Communities has helped nearly 425 families achieve self-sufficiency and permanent housing. In 1999, we began to survey families one year after they exited the two-year Transitional Housing Program. Results from the 2009 survey strongly indicate that client families that complete the Program have developed the skills and change necessary to live productive self-suffi-cient lives.

Bridge Communities graduate, Janine G. signs mortgage documents to purchase her first home for her and her three children. When Janine entered the Bridge program she had little understanding of budgeting and lacked the financial and employment skills to succeed. Janine’s mentor, Mary MacKenzie shared, “It is only through Janine’s hard work and faith that she excelled while in the Bridge program. I remember when we walked through the condominium for the first time Janine just kept repeating, ‘Oh my goodness’ and when we entered what would become her bedroom she broke down in tears. We all laughed and cried and celebrated Janine’s accomplishments”

Janine purchased her condominium through the Home Shared Equity Program sponsored by Bridge Communities that allowed her to purchase a portion of the condominium’s equity and gain homeownership benefits, while at the same time kept her monthly housing costs affordable. Janine stated, “I never thought I would ever own a home. It feels so secure for me and my kids. I worked so hard to save the money and gain the education needed to get ahead. I know that Bridge will help me with anything I need and I can always count on them.” It was not an easy journey for Janine, but one that we are so proud to have walked with her said Mary. That sentiment is echoed by all of us at Bridge Communities. Congratulations Janine!
