Numbers, Symbols & WordsYour Daily Warmup PuzzlesIn bridge we manipulate puzzles involving numbers, symbols and words and strive for logical solutions (or at least inspired guesses). In each issue this week we will feature a pair of number/symbol puzzles, an easy one here on page two, and a harder one on the inside back cover; and, a word puzzle at the bottom of this page. In all of these puzzles, you will be able to solve them without guesswork, by logical deductions alone, which is what we're all trying to do at the table.

Today's puzzle is called Unruly. We start with a grid of squares, some of the squares with X or O in them. Your job is to fill in the rest of the grid with an X or an O in each cell, such that:

—There are no three consecutive cells horizontally or

vertically with the same symbol. (There will be many instances of three or more consecutive diagonal cells with the same symbol.)

—Each complete row and column contains an equal number of Xs and Os.

The easy version is above right. Hints, and a more difficult puzzle will appear on page 15. Answers will appear in tomorrow's Daily Bulletin. For more warmups, check out the word puzzle below.

Word puzzles this week are from an app called Unolingo. It is a crossword without clues! There are exactly 26 blanks to fill in: each letter of the alphabet fills one of the blanks. The puzzles are designed

so that only common English words are used; there are no unfamiliar, arcane, centuries-old words found only in crossword puzzles. Look first for the locations of the hard letters: QU, X, J, Z. Be sure to mark off the letters used in the checking area beside the grid to keep track of your progress. It's not as difficult as it seems! I did most of these in 3-6 minutes.

A list of words in the puzzle

(in alphabetical order) is on page 5. If you need a more limited hint, ask someone to examine the word list and tell you if a word you suspect is on the list.

August 24, 2016 Bridge By The Freeway — Puget Sound Regional Daily Bulletin Page

Puget SoundingsWelcome to Lynnwood! It's District Nineteen's summer Regional, late August in Lynnwood, a north Seattle suburb with a beautiful Convention Center, plenty of nearby shopping and restaurants, and a remarkably consistent schedule and attendance every year.

And if you're here, you already know that. If you're reading this at home, anywhere along the I-5 corridor from Mt. Vernon to Tacoma, from Bellingham to Olympia, even from Vancouver BC to Centralia, your drive time is fairly doable: come out and give us a try! You'll see many more from the expanded I-5 corridor from Vancouver BC to Vancouver WA, from eastern Washington, Vancouver Island, and beyond. We've made it easy to read these Bulletins from home, but we need to remind all these lurkers that we'd much rather you read the Bulletins we print and distribute on site, as a playing participant. Come and join us!

Consistency, did I say? Last three years attendance through Tuesday: 286½ (2014), 285½ (2015), 287½ (2016)!

You can pay for entries with your credit card, and purchase vouchers that can be used all week. A volunteer will be near the Partnership Desk to sell the vouchers at about 12:30 and 6:45 each day. There is no extra charge for this service, the vouchers cost the entry fee in U.S. dollars. Remember though that you still need to line up and pay for an actual entry with the purchased

voucher, plus the $4 surcharge for non-members. Of course, the Partnership Desk is up and running with Seattle's Grand Life Master matchmaker, Ann Romeo, to whom no question is unanswerable.

The snack bar at the Convention Centre is open during the late morning, through the lunch hour, and up until about the first break in the afternoon session. It looks like some hot days ahead and the snack bar keeps you out of the sun...

Today's speaker, at about 6:45 in the corner of the playing area farthest from the main entrance, is expert player and teacher Rhonda Foster of Victoria BC. Her topic will be Defensive Carding. Tomorrow: professional player and teacher Robert Todd of Tallahassee FL, founder of the Adventures in Bridge website (advinbridge.com).

Online, we are happy to announce that d19.org is up and running again with a new talented person at the helm, JP Weber. Links to the Daily Bulletins (posted each morning by 6am), the photos page (which we will update when there is time and probably will not be complete until Sunday night), and a Lynnwood-specific ACBL Live link (results posted shortly after all play finishes each session), are on the d19.org Lynnwood page, which you will find here:

d19.org (I could give you a longer link, but the front

page will have an impossible-to-miss link to the Puget Sound Regional page.) But while you're there, check out the fine job JP is doing on the District Web Page and thank him for his work if you meet him here this week!

Coming Soon: Bridge By The Slopes!Next District Regional in Whistler BC, 2010 Olympics co-host

Please be sure to pick up a copy of the Whistler Regional flyer near the Partnership Desk (there are two: one with hotel information, one with an event schedule). The final District 19 Regional of 2016 will be a snowball's throw from the skislopes in Whistler BC, from November 7-13. The host

hotel and playing site, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, is located close to the skilifts and to shopping and sightseeing, and the bridge rates are quite good (especially considering the

exchange). Getting to Whistler from downtown Vancouver is a scenic two and a half hour drive on roads considerably upgraded for the 2010 games. Many other transportation options from Vancouver airport or downtown to Whistler are easy-to-find on the Internet. Dress warmly!

Weather in mid-fall is quite cool with more rain than snow at the bottom of the hill.

Tuesday Swiss TeamsWinners: SCHOLES (A), STAUDT (B), JOHNSON (C)Closer than it looks: the SCHOLES team ran the prevent defense in the finale against HO; needing only two VPs to clinch the event win, they managed five, winning the event at the expense of their perfect thus far 7-0 record. Team BASSETT had the lead in Flight B and C after seven rounds, but came up against Staudt and lost, leaving STAUDT the strat B winners and allowing JOHNSON to sneak past for the strat C win.

How The Side Game Series WorkIn a nutshell: it's just bridge: single-session stratified open pairs, red points for the winners. We use the same deals as the gold-point pair events that are held at the same time, so that you can discuss them with your friends no matter what event you were in.

The difficult bit comes when we add in the possibility of winning gold points. Here's how that works: Side Games take place every session from Tuesday thru Saturday. The five morning games form a

series called the Morning Side Game Series. The five afternoon games form a series called the Afternoon Side Game Series. The five evening games ... okay, that part is fairly simple and you've got it.

You can play any number of games in a side game series: zero, five, anything in between. Entering one series carries no obligation to play in other games in that series. You can play more than one game in a side game series with different partners. Play five with five different partners if you want, or play two with one and two with another and one with a third.

When the series is finished, the computer tallies all of the scores and every individual player gets a score which is: your best game and your second best game in the series, in percent, added together, even if the two games were with different partners. About 115-120% is usually a series-winning or at least a contending score (usually six places are given series masterpoint awards). But to qualify for gold points, you need to play two games in the same series. Not mandatory, but recommended if you want to win those gold point awards. We'll be listing the leaders in each series beginning tomorrow, when each series has two games in.

The masterpoints for each individual game are red points, but can be converted to gold points if you win a game and play in a second game in the series, or if you make the final list of series leaders. If you win a series award, it will replace your awards won in individual games, but if those awards sum to more than the series award, you get the series awards in gold points and the difference in red points.

Unruly HintsIntroductory Puzzle on Page 2Unruly recap: Fill in the rest of the Xs and Os so that there are no horizontal or vertical three-in-a-rows (diagonal is OK), and so that the number of Xs and Os in each row and column is exactly equal.

Unruly hints: Look for pairs of adjacent Xs or Os and mark the opposite symbol on both ends. Look for X-blank-X or O-blank-O and mark the opposite symbol in the middle. When there are only two or three unmarked cells in a row or column, count the Xs and Os in the row or column. If one symbol already has half, fill in the rest with the other. If the remainder is 1-1 or 2-1 or even 3-1, often you will be able to see where the single must go to prevent a three-in-a-row from forming.

Now can you do the easy puzzle on page 2? How about the more difficult one on this page? Also, check the word puzzle on page 2.

Answers will appear in tomorrow's issue. The number/symbol puzzles were generated by software available (for all computers or smartphones) at this site — www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/ — where you will find

over three dozen types of such puzzles and controls to suit any size and difficulty level.

DINO RecorderThe main role of the Recorder is to receive written information, complaints and suggestions by players about other players, tournament directors, tournament facilities and anything else directly related to bridge. The Recorder's Duties:

• The Recorder keeps ongoing records of all grievances brought to his attention, the facts of which he is able to verify. Absolute confidentiality is observed.

• The Recorder has no punitive powers. If a hearing does take place, however, the Recorder's records may be made available to the Committee as evidence.

• The Recorder will review memos received and determine how the issue is to be acted upon. He may investigate to determine the facts and possible extenuating circumstances. • The Recorder acts as an educator. Many players do not understand ethics and rules. The

Recorder is able to help newer players, and others, become aware of each player's ethical responsibilities.

To report an incident to the District Recorder, obtain a Player Memo form from a Director. All Player Memos should be completed as fully as possible and returned to the Recorder or to a Director. The DINO Recorder is: David Binney, 1522 4th Ave N., Seattle, WA 98109. Phone: 206/354-3871. Email: [email protected]

Bridge By The FreewayTHURSDAY Edition

Bridge by the Freeway is the Daily Bulletin of the 2016 Puget Sound Regional in Lynnwood WA, just north of Seattle. The tournament site is the Lynnwood Convention Center, at 196th St SW and 36th Ave W, just west of Exit 181 (southbound) or 181B (northbound) from I-5, a few blocks east of Lynnwood's com-mercial center and a few blocks southwest of the Alderwood Mall.

I welcome news, stories, photos, interesting deals, and other material for Bridge by the Freeway, and I’ll print as much as I can—from experts, intermediates, and novices alike. I will be available for photos of overall winners in all strats from about 2pm every day until the end of

the evening session, at “preduplication station" at the southwest corner of the building, or possibly near the main entrance with my iPod camera looking for people who seem like winners as the session ends. Any win is important enough for a photo: no matter the bracket or strat, even if some players are missing, even if the win happened several days ago!

Each edition of Bridge By The Freeway is posted online by breakfast time. The place to go online is the District Nineteen Web Page:

d19.org The main page will have a direct link to the

Lynnwood page, which will have links to the Bulletins (posted each morning by 6am), the direct link to game results at ACBL Live (which the Directors will try to post shortly after each game), and an online site where Bulletin photos will be available for download (alert: this last sometimes gets put at the end of my long list of things to do but I will not leave Lynnwood until all the photos are posted).
