I n an unprecedented move, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted two dozen raids across Srinagar, New Delhi and Haryana in connection with terror funding by Pakistan-based groups to stoke unrest in Kashmir Valley. During 14 raids in Srinagar out of a total of 22 raids, on the houses and offices of separatist leaders and some business- men, incriminating docu- ments, including letterheads of banned terrorist outfits like Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Tayyeba, and cur- rency notes worth 60 lakh, were recovered. "The raids were carried out at the residences, offices and commercial establishments of a few financiers, hawala opera- tors and office bearers of some of the separatist groups in con- nection with the terror funding case," a spokesman of the fed- eral investigating agency said. The NIA searches began early on Saturday and contin- ued throughout the day. Sources said the houses and offices of separatists and some businessmen who are associat- ed with three prominent sep- aratist leaders — Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik — were searched. The prominent separatists whose houses were raided included Nayeem Khan, Altaf Ahmad Shah alias Fantoosh and Aftab Hilali alias Shahidul Islam. Khan has already been booked by the NIA and quizzed at least four times in Srinagar and New Delhi after a private TV channel claimed that it caught him in a sting operation conceding to and revealing details of receiving money to fuel unrest in Kashmir. The NIA sleuths raided Khan's residence at Parraypora and Fantoosh's residence at Bemina. Fantoosh is Geelani's son-in-law and heads the legal bureau of his faction of Hurriyat besides being a prominent businessman own- ing shops in commercial hub Lal Chowk. Shahidul Islam is a former chief of now-defunct Hizbullah outfit, who renounced vio- lence to join Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Hurriyat and became its chief spokesperson. The NIA also raided the res- idences of JKLF leader Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate, Mehrajuddin Kalwal, district President of Geelani's Tehreek- e-Hurriyat, Raja Zahoor Rehman, Zahoor Ahmed Watali and Muhammad Sultan. T wo soldiers were martyred and four others wounded when a Jammu-bound convoy was attacked by terrorists in Lower Munda area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district, around 85 kilometres south of capital Srinagar. Hizbul Mujahideen claimed respon- sibility for the attack that occurred at a time when Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat was camping in the Valley. The attack took place near Hillar village along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway around 11 am when the convoy was heading to Jammu after leaving Srinagar headquarters. Deputy Inspector General of Police (South Kashmir Range) Soyam Prakash Pani said that the terrorists opened indis- criminate fire at the Army convoy leaving at least six sol- diers wounded. U nion Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said infiltrations by terrorists from across the Line of Control (LOC) into Jammu & Kashmir declined by 45 per cent after the surgical strikes last year. However, the security establishment apprehends infil- tration attempts are actually all set to begin full throttle now because compared to 2016, when the major ingress routes were clear by January itself, this year there has been heavy snowfall and a delay in the snow-melting process. Snow has melted in the lower reaches of North Kashmir but it will only be by June end that the ingress routes will clear at higher altitude. "And due to the delay in avail- ability of clear ingress routes, terrorists have a shortened window to infiltrate this year. Thus ground reports indicate they will make a determined bid to infiltrate," sources said. At least, 200 fully-trained terrorists are waiting to sneak in from launch pads located close to the LOC in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), sources said. The most infil- tration-prone routes are in Keran and Machil sectors. The Army is working "overtime" to prevent infiltra- tions by repositioning troops along the LOC especially in the higher reaches of North Kashmir and "resuscitating" the anti-infiltration fence dam- aged due to snow F ive persons were arrested on Saturday after a violent con- flict emerged between the two groups in Bargain area under Bariatu police station following attack on a marriage party by a particular group of people by stones, bamboo sticks and swords leaving at least nine per- sons injured, including women and children on Friday. Police said that the situa- tion was completely under control and steps had been taken to check rumours to spread further in this regard. Incidentally, bridegroom Sandeep Kumar is the cousin of Pratap Kumar, who was arrest- ed on May 31 for sharing a Facebook post which was object- ed by a particular community. “Situation is completely under control now and ade- quate forces have been deployed in the area. On the basis of the FIR lodged by those who got injured last night, we have arrested five persons,” said City SP Aman Kumar. Another FIR was also lodged by the local Councillor Husna Ara from the other side, he added. It has been alleged in the FIR that she was attacked by a group of more than 200 per- sons who tried to break the window panes of her home and also misbehaved with her. Referring to the incident which took place on Friday, the SP further added that a wed- ding party was passing through the mosque in the area during ‘azaan’ (Muslim call to prayer) which also tried to fire crack- ers before it, which was opposed by the people result- ing into a dispute between the two parties leading to rampage by the two sides. In the entirely male-dominatedsuperhero spectrum of Hollywood,Wonder Woman is a refreshingly

gentle, story-oriented action dramaaround the Amazonian dame who firstmade waves in the 1940s as DCComics’ only woman superhero andthen splashed the small screen in the70s to much acclaim.

This is Wonder Woman’s firstouting in Hollywood and shecompletely captivates you with herethereal looks, endearing naivety andabsolute power, traits that are trulymuch beyond human comprehension.

The goodness of this engaging, humorous and languid action filmworks at various levels. The fact thefilm is directed by a woman gives itthat special flavor missing from ruggedall-male landscapes that DC Comicshas made its money from thus far.Patty Jenkins keeps the womanly thingalive all through the movie despite hermain character being dressed almostalways in iron armour, fighting evilmen, rippling muscles and beingruggedly Amazonian.

But Gal Gadot, the Israeli actresswho plays Wonder Woman, is a perfectfit to the role. Besides being stylishlystunning and a hatke beauty, she alsohas the physique and gravitas of amythical Amazon woman created bynone other than God Zeus to protecthumanity from his son Ares, the Godof War. Her sparkling eyes captivateyou on screen even as you get suckedinto all the action and drama she isborn with and is destined to unleash.

Jenkins’ plus point is that shemanages to take the film beyond the

asphyxiating grip of machine-orientedbreakneck action to tell you a story, breathe naturally, laugh, cry, introspectand generally be with human emotionswhich engage audiences as no CGI can.Wonder Woman asks simple questions, wonders at humanity’s ills and at thesame time takes it upon herself to saveit from itself erroneously believing allthe time that she is saving humansfrom Ares himself.

Her unsaid, budding romance witha British spy who transports her fromher mythical land unvisited byhumanity to London and then to thewestern front of World War may haveremained unfinished business but youdo not mind it precisely because it doesnot overwhelm the actual reason of thefilm, that being to showcase WonderWoman’s prowess as the ultimatesaviour of the world.

Indeed, this daughter of Hippolytawith special powers even she is notaware of is, by far, the most captivating, unstoppable, fun to be with, superherofrom the DC Comics stalk thus far.Without doubt, this one is the film ofthe week, despite the big Rock andPeeCee trying to create waves on thosesexy beaches of the 70s.

Death in the Gunj is more about lifein the back-belly of Jharkhand-West Bengal than about a sinister

murder which the title speaks of.Nevertheless, the film surprises you

on many fronts, and pleasantly sosometimes. For a murder mystery whichyou think it is, it is much too old worldand languid, merely sharing some happy, some tricky, some complicated, somesimple moments of a Bengali family’sNew Year eve get-together in a remotevillage house where the parents havechosen to retire despite the concern oftheir big city children.

Those moments are no doubt real, happening and carefully constructed tobite into the realism of a typical modernBengali family. There is an extra-maritalaffair thrown in between a brash RanvirShourey and a beautiful western beautyin Kalki Koechlin. There is a dejectedcousin, a run-of-the-mill couple with aprecocious daughter, there are some un-fleshed schooltime buddies who come into clink the glasses and then there areTanuja as mom and Om Puri (has sincepassed unexpectedly) as father.

Both, one must say, fail to do justiceto their roles as the roles assigned to themare half-baked, one of those side dishesthat the director serves merely to enhancewhat he is trying to tell you. There’splanchette too and the invoking of a ghostwho appears, or so I think, in the mostunexpected of places in the film.

More of a story for an idle day than areal thriller, this one.

The animation scores by twisting the storyinto a modern kind of world with whichtoday’s children will relate. It makes you

laugh a lot with very “today” jokes on thekindergarten world. It speaks of technology, itspeaks of Google, it also speaks of a whole lotof CGIs that come in handy for the babyHanuman to fly around the geographicalboundaries of the Earth and pick upexperiences which slowly and steadily chipaway his childlike fears of the unknown. Afterall, he is Hanuman and is there to save Sita fromRavana, only that is one thing he does not doin this one.

Here he is a child, taken away by atornado, deposited in a faraway jungle with hislizard chachi and is groomed by a self-interested Garud. The stories behind all thefamiliar characters from Ramayana are hugelydifferent but engaging.

Only thing wrong with the film, and hugelyso, is that the animation quality is from aprevious generation and much below thestandards today’s children are happy with. Notthat we don’t have the wherewithal for a Disneykind of animation so one wonders why theploys were not used. If it is animation it has tobe slick and GenEx, or it will not work, despiteall the humour and the good intention. Justanother of those summer holidays quickiesmade in a hurry on a measly budget.

Wasn’t Baywatch always aboutcertain portions of thewoman anatomy than about

any kind of crime and chase thrillers? That’s the way it should have remainedbecause more the world matures, moreit moves back into serenading, well, woman anatomy on the big screen, especially when it is localed around abeach, sea and some Sunday fun in thesummers.

The latest edition of Baywatch, hijacked from the now aged DavidHasselhoff by none other than musclerippling Rock, is a muddle much likethe beach and sea conditions duringmonsoons. It does not show enough ofanything, not even skin as a trueblood Baywatch franchise should have, and gets rather too complicated withfallen heroes, drugs, corruption andjurisdiction issues that are too

commonplace for a Baywatch title to getstuck into.

Come to think of it, the film ismore Bollywood than Hollywood whenit comes to all the fisticuffing andbrawling and this is not just becauseone Ms Priyanka Chopra has manageda meaty role in the film.

As the villain selling drugs, expanding her criminal empire withunadulterated corruption and killingpeople by the drop of her champagneglass, she does make a mark butdespite all the swagger, the drawl, theaccent and the beestung lips highlightedas never before, she is still a sidekickin a film which ripples more on Rock’smuscles than on the buxom beachbeauties it was always meant to.

On the whole, this one is a boringtake on an era gone by and is so boredwith itself that is is compelled to evokethe romance of Baywatch by bringingin a wrinkled Hasselhoff and a muchover the age Pamela Anderson in two-second roles to somehow save theinevitable sink of lax direction, slimstoryline and inadequate dressing up ofthe scene, so to say.

Southern India MillsAssociation (SIMA) on

Saturday hailed the Goodsand Services Tax (GST) ratesannounced for the textileindustry.

Union Finance MinisterArun Jaitley announced thatall natural fibres includingcotton, cotton yarn, fabricsand ready-made garments val-ued below 1000 have beenclassified under 5 per centGST rate, garments valuedabove 1000 under 12 percent; synthetic or man-madefibres and synthetic yarnunder 18 per cent, with thefabric irrespective of fibre hasbeen classified under 5 percent GST rate.

As the textile industry hasbeen under the optional routesince 2004 and the fabricshave been under zero VATrate, the 5 per cent GST ratewould bring substantial rev-enue apart from widely broad-basing the tax net across thetextile value chain and ensur-ing compliance, SIMA chair-man M Senthilkumar said ina release here. GST on readymade garmentsbelow 1000 would greatlybenefit the common manacross the country, being amass consumption item.

SIMA chief has stated that5 per cent GST rate on cottonfibre would sustain the com-petitiveness of over 20 millioncotton farmers as this rateacross the value chain wouldenable the cotton textile indus-try to remain globally com-petitive, achieve substantialgrowth rate and increase cot-ton fibre consumption andthereby increase the earningsof the farmers.

He expressed hope thatthe textile job work would beexempted from service taxwhich is essential to benefitthe industry, especially thepowerloom sector, knitting, processing and garmentingsectors. Senthil Kumar saidthat 18 per cent GST ratelevied on man-made fibreand synthetic yarn would haveinverted duty structure prob-lem as the fabric would attractonly 5 per cent GST rate.

Concerned with declining market of Indian sea-farers industry despite having high popula-

tion in comparison to its rival countries, repre-sentatives of leading shipping associations in thecountry - such as National Union of Seafarers ofIndia (NUSI), Maritime Union of India (MUI),Maritime Association of Shipowners, Shipownersand Agents (MASSA) and others - have joineda ‘task force’ or committee formed by DirectorateGeneral of Shipping to primarily increase the glob-al share of Indian seafarers' market to over 9 percent from 7 per cent at present.

India with 12 per cent of the world’s popula-tion has just 7 per cent of the seafarers’ market whilstPhilippines with just 2 per cent of the world's pop-ulation has grabbed about 20 per cent global share. There are about 130,000 Indian seafarers who serveaboard cargo ships across the globe currently, accord-ing to industry sources. The leading seafarer rep-resentatives have decided to submit a list of rec-

ommendations as well as observations to theDirector General of Shipping on June 6, 2017 inMumbai. “Our report would include various sug-gestions like actions required for increasing the glob-al share of Indian seafarers and restructuring of mar-itime examination systems in India,” said MASSAChairman Capt Prashant Rangnekar. The recentmove of Indian shipping industry clearly indicatesthe Government's thrust on increasing the globalshare of Indian seafarers and continuous improve-ment of maritime training infrastructure in India.

“Although global share of Indian seafarers hascontinued to grow over the years as substantiatedby DG Shipping statistics, we cannot afford to reston our laurels. India should be ready to meet theanticipated demand of qualified seafarers when ship-ping industry witness an upturn globally,” said MaliniShankar, DG (Shipping). Eminent members whoare involved in the task force include Capt PrashantRangnekar, Capt Vinay Singh, Capt Shiv Halbe, CaptMahendra Bhasin from MASSA, Abdulgani Serangfrom NUSI, Amar Thakur from MUI) etc.

Defending championsIndia will be aiming toshut out off-field contro-

versies when they lock hornswith arch-rivals Pakistan intheir ICC Champions Trophyopener - a marquee contestwhere tension and drama isnever in short supply.

One of the finest fastbowlers of current times,Mohammed Amir would bepitted against the talismanicVirat Kohli in what could turnout to be a battle primarily

between India's vaunted battingline-up and against Pakistan'spotent bowling attack.

A line-up that boasts ofKohli, Rohit Sharma, ShikharDhawan, Yuvraj Singh andMahendra Singh Dhoni can beintimidating for any bowlingattack.

But facing Amir and anequally talented Junaid Khan inEnglish conditions, despiteEdgbaston showing signs ofbeing a batting-friendly track, will be testing for the Indianbatsmen.

In any case, Pakistan can bebrilliant on a given day and rub-bish on several others.

For India, the bone of con-tention will be their bowlingcombination, with all-rounderHardik Pandya being the bal-ancing factor.

Jasprit Bumrah andBhuvneshwar Kumar are cer-tainties. Umesh Yadav has morezip in his bowling after a suc-cessful Test season butMohammed Shami has a vari-ety of skill in his repertoire totrouble the best batsmen.

With Pakistan's top-orderfull of right-handers,Ravichandran Ashwin will havea tough fight making it into theteam in place of Ravindra Jadeja.

Like it or not, an Indo-Pakmatch is a bit different fromother cricketing rivalries pure-ly due to its socio-political sig-nificance.

The current cross-bordertension between the SouthAsian neighbours also adds itsdistinct colour to the historicalrivalry in which India havecome up trumps more oftenthan not in global competitions.

For cricketers, it's just"another match" but for thedie-hard fans, a win is noteverything but the only thingthat they expect from theirheroes.

The 'Batsman' Virat knowsmore than a thing or two abouthow to win matches againstPakistan but for 'skipper' Virat, the tournament as a wholewould test his maturity.

The unsavoury controver-sy related to his speculated riftwith chief coach Anil Kumblecouldn't have happened at amore inappropriate time - justwhen India were going into animportant ICC event.

But Indian teams of thepast have shown that off-fieldissues becomes inconsequen-tial, the moment they cross theboundary rope.

Ironical as it may sound, the Pakistan team, which hasalways been controversy-rid-

den, has not had any majorflare-ups till now save enfantterrible Umar Akmal beingsent back due to poor fitness.

While Champions Trophyis one ICC event wherePakistan enjoy a 2-1 head-to-head record against India buton paper, Kohli's men are farsuperior in each and everydepartment of the game.

In batting, man-to-man,

India have more experience

and quality. While Rohit Sharma will be

playing his first internationalmatch after more than sixmonths, Shikhar Dhawan willlook to relive his performanceduring the 2013 edition, whenhe was in the form of his lifewinning 'Man of theTournament' award.

But Rohit and Shikhar areproven match-winners on theirdays and on good tracks theycan be bullies.

Cut to Pakistan, Azhar Aliand Ahmed Shehzad are talent-ed but they are not as prolificas the Indian duo as their aver-ages of 38 plus and 33 plus willsuggest.

At No 3, there are nodebates and the Indian captainalready rates among the topfour batsmen in world cricketalong with Steve Smith, KaneWilliamson and Joe Root.

Babar Azam, with an ODIaverage close to 45, has been aterrific young find for Pakistan. However, the India match willnot only test his technique butalso his temperament in frontof a packed-to-capacity stadi-um.

Yuvraj Singh andMahendra Singh Dhoni are afew years ahead in terms ofquality and execution com-pared to opposition veteransMohammed Hafeez and SarfrazKhan. Pocket dynamo KedarJadhav will also face his first bigtest outside the sub-continent.

However it's the bowlingwhere Pakistan may just havea slight edge as Amir, Wahaband Junaid are tough to face ifthere's cloud cover. ButBhuvneshwar, Bumrah, Shamiand Umesh also combine toform a quality attack.

In all, it’s advantage Indiadespite the reported dressingroom unrest.
