Aside from the somewhat unusual cold weather, I hope you are all having a good year so far. Ofcourse, if you are from “the north,” this still feels like summer to you. It’s all about perspective!
We here in the office have enjoyed settling into our new home and we want to thank all of you whowere so supportive of the office renovation project. Those who have stopped in and been given “the25 cent tour” have been overwhelmingly positive in their response. If you haven’t been in yet, pleasedo stop in and see us. This is your “welcome center.” You will particularly enjoy our new lobby area.As one resident said, “in the old office if there were 2 people at the counter the 3rd had to wait outside.”There is plenty of room now, and we hope it is much more comfortable if you need to wait a momentfor any reason. Again, our thanks to all!
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the topic of kindness and how it impacts our lives in High Point. We have so manysweet, generous people here and I am often astounded at the level of kindness they display in their everyday lives andhow they improve the quality of life for all of us. I’m sure you can think of some of them without even trying. I wouldlike to suggest that we all observe and follow their examples more in our dealings with each other, especially in eventstaking place at our Community Center. Most of us can remember a time when civility and consideration were not onlypracticed, but expected in social situations. People who did not know how to “play nice” with others were not toleratedfor very long in any club or organization and as a result, we all knew how to communicate kindly with others, even insituations where there might be disagreements. That, sadly is becoming a lost art in this time when most of the worldfeels no need to consider the feelings or sensibilities of others, but the standards promoted by most of the world do notneed to rule us in our interactions with fellow “High Pointers.” Those of you who have been here for some time, takea moment to think back to what made you feel you would enjoy retirement in our community. Wasn’t it the friendlinessof the people with whom you came into contact and the fun and ease of getting along with each other in our many andvaried activities? We want new folks here to be glad they made the same choice to move into High Point and participatein our activities going forward. I will leave you with this thought that I love, “Goodness is about character - integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat otherpeople.” - Dennis Prager

HHP EMR’s by Robert Birdsell, President
I hope everyone has been handling the cold weather well andmanaging to stay healthy. It can be difficult at times! You canfeel at ease that our EMR’s are out there and ready to help whenwe are called upon. Our goal is to serve our community the bestand safest ways we can for everyone involved and at the sametime to provide good patient care in a professional manner.
Since the last time we “talked” we have had a few fund raisersthat were very successful and we want to thank everyone fortheir generous donations at all of them. We rely on thosedonations to help keep us running. As some of you probablydon’t know, we have a yearly bill of $5,900 to pay to 911 fordispatching us, along with the cost of our supplies that we mustpurchase. We are working very hard to get the 911 fee reduced. You, as a resident in our community, can help by sending a letteror email to our County Commissioner, John Allocco,[email protected] telling him how you feel about this fee.In the mean time, we will keep doing what we are doing andwhat we love to do to help the people of our community.
Keep your eyes peeled for future fundraisers coming up, such as our combinationCar/Bike Show coming on February 24th
from 9am to 1pm and our Saint Paddy’sDay Dinner in March. We hope to see youall there and thank you for your continuingsupport.

THE HIGH POINT TRAVEL CLUBBy Trey Jordan
Welcome to winter in Florida! I am just glad we are down hereand not “up North.” I think our northern residents are happy thatthey are here for the winter after what we have seen is going onup in the “tundra!”
We had planned to go on the St. John’s River cruise on February8, 2018, but we did not have enough people sign up for it, so itwas cancelled. We do have a “Mystery Trip” on February 24,2018, however, this trip is completely SOLD OUT. We have 79people going on this one.
On March 14, 2018 we are going on the “Calypso Queen” out ofClearwater to Tarpon Springs. This is a 4 hour cruise with acontinental breakfast and luncheon served on board. Check withus on availability for this trip. We are headed for Savannah,Georgia on March 24, 2018, returning March 29th. We have alot going on in this trip. We will have dinner at Paula Dean’s andanother dinner at Ms. Wilkes Boarding House. Check with usfor availability for this trip.
Ladies and gentlemen, please come to a meeting and let us knowwhat you would like to see us do. Without your input, it isdifficult to plan the things that interest you, our members. Landscaping TipsBy Tom Anderson, Univ. of Florida Master Gardener
“Bulbs, Annuals, Fertilizer Ordinance, Vegetables, Roses, LawnWeeds, Azaleas and Free Landscaping Classes”
“When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing aweed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the
ground easily, it is a valuable plant.” – Anon
According to the University of Florida Extension Service manyBulbs can be planted now including Amazon Lily, Crinum, andAgapanthus (African Lily/Lily of the Nile). Provide adequate waterto establish and mulch to protect from the cold. Go to: Bulbs forFlorida - http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_bulbous_flowers
Annuals/Bedding plants that do well in cooler months are petunia, pansy, verbena, dianthus, strawflower and lobelia. See: “Annuals” –http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu?topic_annual_landscape_plants
Don’t forget, The Hernando County Fertilizer OrdinanceProhibits homeowners from applying their own Lawn/Landscapingfertilizer from January 1st until March 31st. Ref: Hernando CountyOrdinance – Sec.28-505 to 28-519
Warm season Vegetables that can be started as Transplants nowand can be moved inside in the event of a freeze are: Tomatoes,Beans, Peppers, Cucumbers and Squash. They should not be plant-ed in the outdoor garden until the danger of freezing temperaturesare past, usually around mid-March. For more information: “Vege-table Gardening in Florida” -http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_vegetable_gardening
Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the over-all form. Add mulch and remember, no fertilizing until after March31st. You should see new blooms in 8-9 wks. See: Roses -http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_rose
The most effective way to start your annual control of Lawn Weedsis to apply a “pre-emergent” herbicide (not a weed and feed) toyour lawn before the weed seeds germinate and get reestablished. In our area this is usually around mid-February after the last frostand when the temperatures rise to 65 degrees for 4-5 days. Ade-quate soil moisture is required before and after application to acti-vate most “pre-emergent” herbicides. Follow herbicide labelinstructions carefully. (Note: Good pre-emergent herbicides areonly available at landscaping stores or on line.) More Info at: LawnWeeds – http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_lawn_weeds
Azaleas will be in full bloom this month, so now is a good time toselect varieties to add to your yard. If your Azaleas need pruning toshape or produce a fuller plant, you need to wait until after the Aza-leas finish blooming because this year’s buds were initiated prior tomidsummer of last year. Additional information at: Azalea –http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/topic_azalea

HIGH POINT MATTERS
Will It Take 9 Months? In 9 months, our Association Charter demands an annual election for updating and reviewingour By-Laws and choosing either 2 or 3 new Directors to our Board. This year, we have tochoose 2 Directors to serve.
It is difficult to attract qualified applicants that have business, management, financial or legalskills. Often, people run for office simply because they have a “personal agenda” or a specificproject that they embrace. That is not a valid reason to “run for office.”
There are more than 1750 properties that make up the High Point Community. That means there are approximately3200, plus or minus, individuals that comprise our Corporation Membership. Yes, High Point is a Corporation andeach land owner is a member of High Point Community Property Owners, Inc! Our Corporation operates on a nearlyone million dollar Annual Budget, so it is vitally important to elect people who will be attentive to the needs of theCommunity and be fiduciarily responsible.
The Board of Directors’ responsibilities include maintenance and management of all facilities owned by themembership. They also establish and oversee a budget approaching one million dollars with total assets nearing 1.8million dollars, maintain all amenities, act as the “eyes and ears” of our Community Association Manager and assistin many areas of business management as and where needed.
Directors should possess considerable public relations or “people skills,” as dispute resolution, misunderstanding ofCharter, By-Laws, Rules and Regulations and their adjudication are almost daily occurances. The Board of Directorshas “general” control and management of the affairs of the Corporation through the office of the CommunityAssociation Manager, who has been hired to, among many other duties, manage association personnel.
This is a “thumbnail” sketch of the responsibilities of Management. It is our Community! We will thrive or fail basedon the choices we make for our Leadership needs. If you have the desire and skills to keep our community, “a greatplace to live,” “throw your hat in the ring,” attend B.O.D. Meetings and see how our community works!
Stop in at 8008 Baltic Street (our new Welcome Center and Administration Offices) and see what a pleasant andprofessional facility Susan and her staff have created. Remember, this facility and its repurposing was made possibleby the funds that remained after our volunteer fire company was disbanded and decommissioned. All of the fundsthat remained came from each of us that supported the fire company with our donations. No new money or moneycurrently otherwise listed as an HPCPO, Inc. asset was involved in this repurposing project. All of High Point hasbenefitted from this much-needed endeavor, without so much as even a minimal increase in your annual dues.
Here’s hoping 2018 is a great year for all of us in High Point. Let’s all keep forefront in our minds the question, “Howcan I best serve our Community?”
