COUNCIL (CENTRAL WARD)

I WANT A BETTER

BOURNEMOUTH FOR MY SON

I moved to Bournemouth in 2004. I got married here.

I now have a nine-month old son. That makes me feel I

want to make the town a better place for him to live in.

We’ve got a fl at, not a proper house.

We need to buy a home in Bournemouth. But prices

are too high.

If you elect me as your local councillor, I will speak

BOURNEMOUTH MUST SUPPORT THE EUROPEAN UNIONThe Liberal Democrats are staunch supporters of the European Union. For good reasons. Take the Lansdowne. The Council has given permission to build student accommodation EVERYWHERE.

Let’s say that UKIP get a hold on Government in this election - they

BY THE SEAWho says Europe isn’t good for us?

Every day I go to work at the new co-working space in Boscombe called By the Sea.

I work with other entrepreneurs in a beautiful offi ce space, for which I pay a very reasonable rent. How was this new facility paid for?

Money from the European Union.

If you’re looking for offi ce space, why not come and join us http://by-the-sea.co

will ask for tighter restrictions on immigration.

Let’s say that there is a vote to leave the European Union in 2017.

This would be CATASTROPHIC for Bournemouth.

The language schools would lose business and there would be a

sharp decline in foreign students studying at our two universities. These large student accommodation developments would be left empty.

The temptation would be to allow the buildings to be occupied by non-students, thus creating huge tenements and slums in the centre of Bournemouth.

THIS BOURNEMOUTH COUNCIL

DOESN’T SOLVE PROBLEMSIn 2006 a local hotelier spent thousands of pounds upgrading his facilities. He built an attractive two-storey glass pavilion called the Blake Suite overlooking Bournemouth gardens. You see it every time you go past the BIC.

It has remained empty since 2006. Bournemouth Council has not resolved a dispute over land for nearly 10 years!

This is exactly the kind of thing I would draw attention to if you elect me as your councillor in Central Ward.

As an event organiser, I would love to put something on in this facility, which is part of the Hermitage Hotel on Exeter Road.

Bournemouth has too many tired hotels, which aren’t adapting to what tourists want. Mistakes may have been made, but it’s the council’s job to get the town moving.

LIBDEM PARTY CONFERENCEThe Conservatives abandoned Bournemouth. The Labour Party abandoned Bournemouth. The Liberal Democrats are coming back to Bournemouth. This year, after a gap of eight years, the Liberal Democrats will have their annual conference in Bournemouth from 19-23 September 2015.

TRAMSManchester has them. Strasbourg has them. Nice has them.

Bournemouth needs a vision for a tram system of the future.

A tram system linking the airport, Talbot campus and the railway station.

It would overcome traffi c problems and connect Bournemouth’s university campus with the town centre and provide an iconic tourist attraction.

BETTER BUSINESS IN BOURNEMOUTHWhen I moved to Bournemouth I noticed business people needed opportunities to sharpen their skills.

I’m President of Hallmark Speakers, which is part of Toastmasters International. The purpose of the organisation is to help people learn leadership and communications skills.

In the past 12 months we’ve given the club a new website, and we now get regular attendance of 30 at the Hallmark Hotel every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. If you want to improve your communication skills for business, politics or social occasions, why not join us?

LET’S UNIFY BOURNEMOUTH,

POOLE AND CHRISTCHURCHIf you look at Google Earth, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch form one urban area. The M1 & M2 buses run from Poole to Christchurch. Looking out the window you won’t be able to see where one town starts and the next begins.Who is conscious of the boundaries? There are only problems. Bournemouth Airport is in Christchurch. Bournemouth University is in Poole. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is based in Poole. When it comes to promoting tourism, the three towns do their own thing. Most Britons don’t realise that Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch make up one conurbation.Services, jobs and powers are triplicated across the conurbation. The three towns have a comparable population to Bristol. Unifi cation would create savings.

BRISTOL VERSUS BOURNEMOUTH

ONE PARTY AUTHORITIES

DON’T WORKAt the moment there are 45 Conservative councillors out of 54 in Bournemouth.

Only two Liberal Democrats.

That’s a real problem for the town.

One party domination isn’t good for North Korea, Russia or Bournemouth.

We need an effective opposition. Who is going to speak out about the 25-year contract with Morgan Sindall? Or the relationship with Mouchel? Who is going to make the sensible case for Navitus Bay?

The Conservative councillors won’t.

You have three votes for local councillors in Bournemouth. Just give me one and you’ll have one councillor to question the vested interests in the Town Hall.

NAVITUS BAYYou can always find reasons for not trying anything new. You can always be afraid of the future. You can always create a rosy picture of the past. Conservative prejudices dominate the debate about Navitus Bay wind farm.Go to Holland, it’s full of windmills. They’re an attractive part of the skyline. The Navitus Bay project is a new way to generate clean energy. It will create jobs. And it will generate enough power for 700,000 homes. There will be new opportunities for leisure. In summer we could catch boats out to visit them and go fishing off the decks. The Liberal Democrats brought sanity to the Coalition, they can also bring sanity to the local debate about Navitus Bay.http://www.navitusbaywindpark.co.uk
