It was great to see Ride Brewing added to the list of UK
participants this week, which includes Mondo, LHG,
Cloudwater, Brewdog, Unity, Forest Road and Crafty Devil,
and Ballykilcavan from Ireland. (There may be other UK
Breweries signed up, but not yet listed on the website)
The Brewdog, Cloudwater and Unity versions are all available now.
This initiative is going to run at least until the end of 2021, so there is still plenty of time to get involved.
Over at Brewbound, they have an interesting article
describing a winding-back of the reopening plans
for bars in the State of Massachusetts (home of our
beloved Trillium and Tree House!), to mandate that
beer to be consumed on-premise can only be sold
alongside food orders prepared onsite:

They note that chips (crisps) and pretzels are not sufficient, but the law does concede that food trucks do
qualify.

Usually the hop harvest is not something that Craft Beer Fans get to
see or participate in. However, this year Yakima Chief are throwing
open their doors for a whole month of virtual events.

ecosystem that surrounds them.
We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro brewery.
A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and
distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.
Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in some
shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of investment. In
our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is not a macro

TAPROOM REVIEW We take a look at a popular taproom each week
London Beer Factory – The Barrel Project, 80 Druid St, London, SE1 2HQ
Located towards the Tower Bridge end of the Bermondsey Beer Mile, The Barrel Project looks similar to most of the
other slightly claustrophobic railway-arch based Taprooms in the Capital.
However, once through the door, the space opens out beautifully, and it is higher, wider and deeper than you could
possibly guess from the street. Lining one wall is an imposing array of barrels, all with simple white-chalk markings
that give just a hint of the wonders contained within.
The bar offers 24 taps including super fresh versions of the hand-full of core LBF beers that most will be familiar with,
the remainder being a broad range of small batch beers many of which are barrel-aged, including stouts, mixed-ferm
sours, pales, lagers and several interesting Belgian farmhouse styles.

Railway arches always offer a pleasant relief from the summer heat and we found the temperature inside very
reasonable, even though outside it was a blistering 35 degrees C on the day we visited. For anyone seeking to stray
slightly off the IPA reservation with their choices of Craft Beer in Central London, it’s hard to think of a better location
to head for than the The Barrel Project.
