QUIA.com

• I recently re-discovered this teacher-friendly site, and was absolutely amazed at the flexibility it offers teachers.

• I had seen this site before, but didn’t pursue how it could be used until now.

• It supports my idea that the computer is the ultimate developmental tool: as you use it, you find more and more ways to use it. (like peeling an onion, but without the tears)

Since I teach a class that shows kids how to use technology in their regular academic classes, I thought I would let you know some of the web-sites that can be a help to

teachers.1.  http://webquest.org/   This site has a listing of webquests sorted by grade level and

appeal.  Great for extra assignments for individuals, pairs, etc.  2.  http://homepage.mac.com/cohora/  Internet scavenger hunts, good fun for those who

love trivia, or need a quick 1-period assignment for a class or individual3.  http://www.teach-nology.com/  Everything you need to know about teaching (just

kidding - but it is a wealth of resources)4.  http://www.globalschoolnet.org/index.html  This is a bit like Teach-nology.  Much good

information..5.  www.epals.com  E-mail service free for kids and teachers.  Good place to hook kids up

with keypals from other countries.  The e-mail is completely monitored by the teacher setting up the mail.

Brevard Schools has set up teachers with Gaggle.net, which is much the same but has a “locker facility” that serves as a virtual floppy disk accessible from any internet

capable computer.6. http://www.edhelper.com/ Lesson Plans by subject, etc.

7. www.quia.com Hand-out available. This has proven to be a valuable addition to the tools I use in my classroom.

WEB SITES I USE OR HAVE USED

Page 14: BREVARD EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE Presented by: Fred Ankersen, Teacher 7 th Grade Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School

http://www.classroom.com    This site has changed and is becoming more professional

development oriented.  Excellent products.

http://homepage.mac.com/cohora/    This site is done by a technology coordinator and is filled with information and lessons for teachers to use.  It has a wealth of

information for classroom teachers.

http://www.esc20.k12.tx.us/etprojects/rubrics/Default.htm    This site has grading rubrics that cover every conceivable type of

grading situation.

http://www.ualberta.ca/~jedavies/WebQuest/    This site provides webqests for teachers to use in the classrooms.

http://assignaday.4teachers.org/    This is a calendar teachers can use to post assignments and their due

dates.

http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/welcome/    This is the site I use at the beginning of the school year to introduce the new students to the internet.  It originates in England, and is quite

good.  I also use it to compare our website to the ones in England.

Work Samples

• Most of the work done by the students is the result of very basic research to satisfy a question posed in a WebQuest. The emphasis is on acquiring the skills to use the software that is available on the computers at Space Coast. This lets them get comfortable with the display options in a non-threatening, comfortable venue (they get playing out of their systems).

Before the measurements, find 3 of the other schools from 3 other places, in different regions of the world. Report on culture, environment, history, and show on map. Use Word for your report, then convert to PPT for highlights.

Lang Arts Activity

After the measurements are taken and submitted, write a report in Word that tells how the climate affects the environment for our school, as well as the three schools you researched.

Powerpoint Presentations

• The following slides were excerpted from the presentation created as part of a final exam by one of my better students. I included a slide that had an example of a hyperlink that I teach the students to use to move around a presentation.

In turn for all their hard work zoologist are well paid. They are also the least likely people to be fired. How can you get fired from a job where you watch animals all day? Even if a zoologist does get fired they can get another well paying job quite easily. They can become a full scientist or doctor or veterinarian. Go To End

K-12 Education Curriculum

CIESE sponsors and designs interdisciplinary projects that teachers throughout the world can use to enhance their curriculum through compelling use of the Internet. We focus on projects that utilize real time data available from the Internet, and collaborative projects that utilize the Internet's potential to reach peers and experts around the world. Below is a catalog of projects that are currently being or have been sponsored by CIESE . Each project has a brief description and links to the National Science Standards and NCTM math standards it supports.

Internet-Based Projects

• Earthquakes, a scientific and physical phenomenon, affect our lives in many ways. In this project, students use Real-Time earthquake and volcano data from the Internet to explore the relationship between earthquakes, plate tectonics, and volcanoes. Students will:

• Use Real-Time data to solve a problem. • Study the correlation between earthquakes and tectonic plates. • Determine whether or not there is a relationship between volcanoes and

plate boundaries. • Musical Plates is recommended for upper elementary, middle

school and high school students (ages 11-18). Our site is best viewed at a resolution of 800 X 600 or greaterClick HERE for instructions on how to check or change your monitor's resolutionThis project is developed and managed by the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) which is located at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. You can learn more about this and many other CIESE sponsored Internet-based educational activities by visiting http://www.k12science.org The language arts component was developed by the Bank Street College of Education working in collaboration with CIESE staff.

Earthquake plotting in real-time.

Page 34: BREVARD EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE Presented by: Fred Ankersen, Teacher 7 th Grade Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School

As you can see from these maps, the recent earthquakes that have been recorded closely follow the lines of the tectonic plates.

The map to the right shows the earthquakes above a level of 4.0 on the Richter Scale, during a span of several days.

This map shows the convergent and divergent tectonic plates. Notice the relationship between the two maps.

Net Support School• The screen on this computer is showing a

student screen being monitored.Computer Central – Room 502

From my computer I can monitor each or all computers in my lab of 24. I send messages to correct problems, encourage, and suggest. I can send an assignment to a folder, and collect the completed work from the students’ folder. I can take a picture of the screen of a student who has deviated from the assigned project. I can blank the screens to get un-divided attention, control the screen to show how to work something out. When I want them to see what an assignment should look like, I can project my screen on the students’ screens, or I can present a student’s exemplary work on all the other screens.

There is also a facility which allows the creation of test questions which can be sent to the student computers. It can be timed, and then collected, and graded.

Logo Programming

• This has been the most challenging teaching assignment I have encountered. I am trying to teach the basics of computer programming to 7th grade students. Since programming requires the application of logic to a problem, I am afraid that I am facing some disappointments….. But the “Ah Hah” moments make up for the frustrations.
