Editorial To Members, Welcome to our second edition of the Brendan Reeves Supporters Club Mag. Since you were last reading the magazine we have been very busy starting off our 2011 season. The Supporters Club Function on February 19th was a great night with approximately 200 people attending. Following the night was our Hotlaps Day and many supporters enjoyed the thrill of sitting in the left hand drive Subaru with Brendan around our 2km practice track in Wedderburn. The weekend raised about $8,000, which contributed to the cost of testing a car before our first outing at the WRC in Portugal. We then flew to Europe on March 6th and started our first Academy training on the 10th – 11th March. The training involved media, technical, fitness, driving etc. It was a great way to meet other academy participants and get our head around what was happening for the season. Next we travelled to Finland for the Tommi Makinen Snowschool on March 13th – 14th. This was an amazing experience and Brendan said it was the best day of his life when Tommi arrived and did some training with us. We both got to sit in with Tommi which was amazing going in with a four times World Champ. After Finland we headed to Madrid to test a car for two days before the first WRC Academy round. The test was a great success and Brendan was able to get a good feel for the little Ford Fiesta R2. We then headed to Portugal for our first WRC Academy round. What a week that was. It was both the hardest and most exciting rally of my career. After a good start to the rally we unfortunately got a puncture in stage 3 and dropped back to last. With hard work we clawed our way back to 4th and finished the event with 12 very important points. From Portugal it was straight home and off to the annual Targa Tasmania with Mazda Motorsport. Driving the Mazda 3MPS in the showroom class we set our sights on a 10th outright finish. But after five tough days of racing and Brendan driving the car like he stole it… we finished an amazing 4th outright in the event and 1st Showroom. This was possibly our best result to date. I hope you enjoy reading about all our travels throughout the Mag!

A Message From Brendo….

To Members, Hopefully this finds you all well and ready for another edition of the Brendan Reeves Supporters Club Mag. It’s been a busy few months since our last edition of the Mag. Our first event was Targa Wrest Point. I competed in this rally with Jamie Vandenberg for Mazda Motorsport while Rhianon was recovering from surgery. Jamie and I worked hard to win showroom class by a comfortable margin and kicked off a great start to the season. Our first Supporters Club Function on February 19th in Wedderburn at the town hall was a great success with over 200 people attending. The following day was our hotlaps at the 2km practice track dad built for us. About 50 keen supporters came for a ride with me in the left hand drive Subaru and had a great time. Next finally the time had come for Rhianon and I to travel to Europe for our first World Rally event of the year in Portugal. But before we would go to Portugal we had a few other activities along the way. Our first stop off was in Cockermouth in the UK. Yes that’s right… Cockermouth! This is the base of M-Sport and was where we would take part in two days of training to prepare us for the Academy. We had a great few days here getting to meet the other Academy drivers/co-drivers and learning very valuable information about the season. Then off to Finland for the Tommi Makinen Snowschool. An experience made possible by a wonderful anonymous supporter. The two days involved driving a 2010 Subaru STI on snow and was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Getting to sit next to four times World Champion Tommi Makinen was simply awesome and taught me so much. And Tommi’s favourite saying for the day was “Go flat out”. And that sure is what he did. When it was Rhianon’s turn to sit next to him… my words of advice were simple “Hang On”! So after an adrenalin packed two days…. it was back to business and a two day test in Spain. With limited experience in the Fiesta R2’s it was important to lease a car and do some testing to get our head around driving the car. The car we tested was a little different from the latest spec Fiesta, but would still prove valuable to our learning. So now our preparation was complete and it was off to Portugal for the real reason we were there… the WRC Academy. Portugal was very warm and a lovely place. We arrived on the Friday night, so had a couple of days for washing etc before the real action began. On Monday we completed documentation and were lucky enough to have a guest presentation with Ken Block. Ken gave us many insights into the commercial world of rallying and about building a brand etc. Then it was off for two days of recce. We knew the rally would be tough, but neither Rhianon nor I realised how many crests or rocks we would have to contend with. So it

Page 4: Brendan Reeves Supporters Club magazine

seemed like we would need to work hard to make sure we got the car to the end of the event without any issues. The rally got off to a good start with a super special stage. We were third on the stage and things were looking good for the event. But on the following day and stage three of the event we got a puncture only 2km into a 20km stage. I continued to drive on the back left flat for a few km’s but then realised we would need to stop and change it. Unfortunately even after practicing and knowing the exact sequence etc to do our tyre change, it did not go to plan and we lost three and a half minutes instead of the usual two. But we still had a long event in front of us and Rhianon and I knew we had to focus and reassess. The flat had put us into last place in the Academy and things were looking pretty grim. After pushing on and working hard the rest of the day we worked our way back up to 11th in the Academy and a top ten position was looking more promising. Day two was very important for our learning as not only did we need to finish the event, we also needed to build on our times and secure some good points. So after a series of problems with other people in the field and a good run by us, we worked our way back up to fourth and finished with 12 points. A result we were very happy with after the previous day’s problems. Returning to Australia, it was a quick trip back to Wedderburn for 2 days and then off to the annual Targa Tasmania with Mazda Motorsport. At the start of the five day event the Mazda Motorsport boss Allan Horsley has one piece of advice for us… we want a top 10 outright. So that was the goal. We pushed the little Mazda hard for five days and it did not fault. And come day five and after over 500km of racing… we won the showroom class convincingly and came an amazing 4th outright. This was the highest ever position for a showroom car and a great finish for the Mazda team. I hinted at a bonus to the boss but I don’t think that will happen. Now we are home until April 26th when we head off again for the next WRC Academy round in Italy. I hope you enjoy all the regular up-dates on our progress and we look forward to organising another function and seeing you all then.

Cheers Brendo

Victory for Brendan at Targa Wrest Point Mazda Motorsport recorded a successful end to its Targa Wrest Point campaign with a class win for Brendan Reeves.

The final day didn’t start off as planned with the Mazda3 MPS of Reeves and Vandenberg

suffering a temporary electrical setback on the first of today’s stages, dropping them from the

overnight lead to seventh in the Showroom category.

This setback only encouraged Reeves to push harder and the Mazda3 MPS didn’t miss a

beat for the rest of the day as it was fastest on every remaining stage on its way to securing

the Showroom title over a minute ahead of the Astra SRi Turbo of De Britt and Percy.

The dominance of Reeves and Vandenberg’s performance is underlined by the fact that the

Mazda3 MPS was fastest on all but one of the competitive stages at the event.

Brendan Reeves was clearly thrilled with the result. “The issues on today’s first stage

certainly threw the cat amongst the pigeons but even after losing that time, we were

optimistic that the MPS had what it takes to grab back the lead. And we weren’t

disappointed. To win so many stages and come away with the Showroom title really speaks

volumes for the quality of this car,” he said.

Reeves' team mates, Steve Glenney and Bernie Webb, driving a Mazda RX-8 SP, finished

an outstanding second in the Modern category.

A proud Mazda Motorsport boss, Allan Horsley, commented on the team’s performance over

the weekend. “To have secured a class win and second outright really points to the quality of

both Brendan and Steve. But it’s been a real team effort this weekend to ensure that

everything was in place to give us the best chance of victory. We came up just short in the

Modern category but the signs are good and we’ll continue working hard to try and put

ourselves ahead of the competition.”

Charity Day On Saturday, February 12, Brendan took part in a Charity Rally Day in

Canberra to raise money for the Snowy Hydro Southcare Rescue Helicopter Service.

Based out of the Stromlo Forest, the day was an opportunity for the general public to experience the thrill of being strapped into a purpose-built rally car and go flying through the forest with some of the East Coast’s best rally

drivers.

The day was well attended with over 100 rides being purchased in various rally cars, and Brendan was one of the drivers kept busy, taking customers

for rides in one of Rallyschool.com.au's Subaru WRXs.

"It's great to get out and support the Snowy Hydro Southcare Recue

Helicopter Service," Brendan said. "Everyone really enjoyed the day and loved the thrill of going in the rally cars while at the same time knowing the money

was going to a really worthwhile cause."

Supporters Club Function

The first ever Brendan Reeves Supporters Club function was held in Wedderburn on Saturday 19th of February, with the night proving a huge success.

With over 200 people attending the fun-filled evening at the Wedderburn Town Hall, where they were entertained by guest speakers, games, a presentation by Brendan and Rhianon, and an auction.

The MC and auctioneer for the evening was Adrian 'Mozza' Morrisby, who flew over from Tasmania for the function. Guest speaker, former Bathurst winner Tony Longhurst, travelled from the Gold Coast to attend.

Sponsors, supporters and fans enjoyed a great night and helped to raise about $8,000 for Brendan and Rhianon's 2011 WRC campaign.

A number of fans then took the opportunity on Sunday to enjoy a 'hotlap' with Brendan in his Pacific Cup-winning left hand drive Subaru Impreza. The hotlaps took place at the Reeves' test track just outside Wedderburn, and were a great chance to experience a ride in a rally car. Everyone taking part in the hotlaps emerged from the car with a huge smile on their face!

Brendan and Rhianon would like to thank all their supporters for attending the function and the hotlaps day and for making it such a huge success.

The Hotlaps were a great success and many people enjoyed the thrill of going in a rally car with Brendan! But Brendan said the best reaction he got was from Tony Coombes who seemed to think they were not stopping!

And Molly Gould could make a co-driver we have decided. She loved the experience and is the perfect

size for a co-driver.

AFL Charity Match

To help raise funds for the victims of the floods

Brendan played in a charity football match for

had a great time. Highlight of the night was

Brendan handballing the footy to Lloyd before

kicking a goal. Mum was very excited being the

FIA WRC Academy: Induction programme

The FIA WRC Academy, rallying’s premier training programme for young drivers, completed a three-day Induction Programme for its competitors at M-Sport in Cumbria. Thirty-four drivers and co-drivers from 14 countries participated in the event, ahead of round one, Vodafone Rally de Portugal which took place from 24-28 March 2011.

The sessions offered the drivers a chance to familiarise themselves with the Ford Fiesta R2 rally car and Pirelli tyres with which they’ll contest six rounds of the 2011 FIA World Rally Championship, as well as offering classroom tutorials on topics including professionalism, goal setting, media, nutrition and fitness.

Explaining the importance of both on and off-stage preparation to a rally driver’s

career, WRC Academy Principal Marc de Jong said, “The WRC Academy is a world

class competition, mixed with education and training for drivers up to 24 years of

age. In rallying, experience is very important and these guys are at a really early

stage of their career. Many are graduating from national championships and these

are their first steps at WRC level. We want to help them prepare for the WRC

Academy season and give them a good foundation to build their talent. That’s why

this Induction Programme isn’t just about driving, but included many other aspects as

well.”

Robert Reid, 2001 World Rally Champion co-driver and director of ESP, delivered a talk on the importance of planning and goal setting: “Some of the WRC Academy drivers might have felt a bit like they were back at school for the day, but the smartest drivers who take all the advice on board and work with it will soon see the benefits.”

By the end of the day session, the atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation among the excited WRC Academy ‘Class of 2011’. At only 17 years old, Miko-Ove Niinemae can’t believe he’s already found himself on the first rung of the WRC ladder, even proclaiming the Fiesta, “The best R2 car I’ve driven. I think my favourite thing is the handling. It’s steady on the road, not nervous.” Other drivers focused on the benefit of the theory sessions with Dutchman Timo van der Marel chipping in: “I learned how important it was to identify weaknesses and make a plan to turn them into strengths.”

But perhaps the clearest message came through when fellow Aussies and Pirelli Star Drivers Brendan Reeves and Molly Taylor were asked to say the first thing that came into their heads when they heard the phrase ‘WRC Academy’ and chimed in uncanny unison “great opportunity”.

Tommi Makinen Snow Rallyschool The Tommi Makinen Snow Rallyschool was an amazing experience! The snow school is located in Jyvaskyla, the home town for Rally Finland later in the year. To start the snow school we headed to Tommi’s new workshop. We got to meet the mechanics, our instructor and see the two cars that we would drive. Both cars were 2010 Spec C Subarus.

We then made our way out to the forest, which was private property with a purpose built road for the snow school. Our instructor, Tapio Laukkanen, got us straight to work doing recce of the 4.7 km stage. Recce was quite hard because the road was very narrow, twisty and undulating, with snowbanks up to one metre high. There had been quite nice weather, so the stage only had a light covering of snow, with the base predominantly ice.

I jumped in the car with Tapio and did a few runs down the stage in the opposite direction that I recced and then had a drive with him coaching me in that same direction. My initial impression was how unbelievable the grip was from such narrow spiked tyres. If you committed yourself and stayed on the throttle there was almost as much grip as on gravel. There were some patches that were more slippery than others and with the road being so narrow, it was difficult to always keep on line.

Once I was comfortable, it was Rhianon’s turn to get in the car and we went at race speed on our pace notes. The rest of the day we continued to build confidence and learn the art of driving on snow and ice.

Day two’s stage was a lot faster, with less ice but more flowing roads, much like you see on TV for the WRC Rally Finland. There were many corners over crests and some big jumps. The road was also much wider than the previous days stage. I felt more comfortable on this flowing stage but it kept snowing heavily which was making the road very soft and slippery, a real winter experience. We even managed a couple of snowball fights and Tapio and I had some fun by chasing Rhianon and throwing her in the deep soft snow, in her full driving suit! After lunch we were treated to a very special surprise, when Tommi himself came out to drive the full spec rally car and teach me a few tricks. This experience was incredible and one of the best days of my life. The heavy falling snow stopped, so Tommi had to clean the road for a few runs, using every inch possible and any snow bank that he was able to use as a break or to make it faster at the exit. The road cleaned up quite fast and a gravel base started to come through. It was much easier than the tighter ice road for me because the groove wasn’t so narrow and I was more comfortable with the conditions.

After my experience sitting in with Tommi, Rhianon went for a few quick runs, meaning she now has been in a rally car with two World Rally Champions. From Petter Solberg in Spain last October to Tommi Makinen in the snow.

I then got back in the car to drive for the rest of the afternoon. It was much easier having seen how relaxed Tommi was tackling the stage and adapting what he taught me to my driving skills and getting more out of the car and the road.It was really amazing being able to experience driving on the snow.

Fun times in Finland!

With typical Aussie fighting spirit, Brendan and Rhianon have fought their back up the leaderboard at Rally

Portugal to finish a fine fourth. With the disappointment of their puncture on day 1, which cost them over

four minutes, behind them, the pair started the day looking to work their way back into the event.

"Yesterday was really tough," Brendan said before Saturday's opening stage. "Today we will try and make

up a few places and secure some valuable championship points."

And make up a few places is exactly what the pair did - seven of them, in fact! On the day's six stages,

Brendan and Rhianon clawed their way back to finish fourth in the WRC Academy - scoring 12

championship points.

Whilst the rest of the field still had four stages to complete on the Sunday of the event, the WRC Academy

teams spent the final day of Vodafone Rally de Portugal in a debrief session where they analyse their

respective performances.

Targa Tasmania

Brendan and Rhianon have had an emphatic victory in Targa Tasmania which concluded in Hobart on April

10th. The pair finished victors in the Showroom class by an impressive 14 minutes 45 seconds after five

gruelling days of tarmac competition.

Not content on just taking out Showroom honours, Brendan showed his talent against competitors in more

highly-powered vehicles and finished the event in fourth outright. With only two Nissan GTRs and a

Subaru WRX (both of which are 4WDs) ahead of him, the Mazda3 MPS driver's outright result was nothing

short of superb.

Fourth outright is the highest placed finish of any Showroom class vehicle in the event's 20 year history.

Proving his competitiveness, Brendan's stage time on the day's first stage was only beaten by event

winner, Tony Quinn, in one of the GTRs.

"We’ve had a great run and to finish second outright on the first stage today was awesome," Brendan said.

"Our aim was to finish in the top 10 outright, so to finish fourth outright is amazing considering the car we’re

in."

"Once again, the Mazda3 MPS has been a dream to drive and I'm rapt to finish with such a great result. It's

a great way to say thank you to our team for all their hard work over the last week."
