We are now just a few weeks away from our fall conference at Breezy Point. It’s hard to believe that just seven years ago I planned my first conference here. There were so many great memories made that year. It was the beginning for me and my journey within MNDAKSPAN. I hope that all of you can attend this conference. We have a great line up of speakers planned, great accommodations and food. The resort is located right on Pelican Lake so there is a lot to do with a great view. We have scheduled another Meet and Greet this year. This time we will take a beautiful boat ride on Pelican Lake aboard the Breezy Belle. This is not just any old boat ride. This one is aboard a double decker paddle boat. Bring your friends and family along for a beautiful sunset cruise and pizza. You can register for your spot on the MNDAKSPAN website. The resort will also have live music for the late night crowd to finish up your day. It promises to be a great weekend. These last weeks of summer go by so quickly. I hope some of you enjoyed the great Minnesota State Fair and had a chance to visit the Minnesota House booth that was set up in the Education Building.

July was a busy month for the house and senate. On July 28th the skinny health care reform was defeated. Senate failed to pass this proposal by a 49-51 vote. As congress reconvenes it is unclear how health care reform will continue. Republicans have vowed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). We will have to wait and see which direction this law might turn.

The Nursing Community webpage is continuing to pursue funding for the Title VIII nursing workforce development programs. As a review, this program supports nurses practicing in rural and medically underserved communities, advanced education nursing, diversity grants, National Nurse Service Corp, nurse faculty loan forgiveness, as well as geriatric education. This program took some huge cuts and this coalition is working hard to ensure the future of Title VIII.

The ASA is following the opioid crisis. President Trump has declared this as a National Emergency. The current hope is that the Naloxone would have lower prices as well as possible funding for this crisis.

According to the Capital Beat from the ANA, a few grassroots efforts are underway. Nurse to patient ratios have long been under fire. As the article states, we see hospitals and clinics attempting to improve patient satisfaction scores by providing wifi, providing in room TV’s, pleasing surrounds, and even gourmet food. These scores have nothing to do with the quality of nursing care that is

provided and nurses have little control over these and other issues they face. The fact is that increased staffing does increase the quality of care a patient receives. The ANA is advocating for improved nurse staffing and will continue their efforts in 2018.

Also the ANA is following the Cost Sharing Reducation (CSR) that insurance companies are paid in the individual insurance market. The American Nurses Association strongly supports the federal CSR payments.

By the next newsletter congress will be back in session and we will have to follow the road to see what is going to happen with health care reform, Title VIII programs, the opioid crisis and staffing. Have a wonderful fall.

NEWS FROM ASPAN: REGION 3

It’s hard to believe that the National Conference was a quick four months ago! Thank you for your confidence in voting me for a second term as your Regional Director.

The summer may be quiet for some, but for many, the summer months pose schedules of hectic activities. Like many of you, I almost look forward to the return of the structure that the school year brings. As your Regional Director, I have been busy with plans and preparations for this upcoming year through ASPAN.

ASPAN’s Leadership Development Institute will be held in Kansas City in September. This activity promises to provide Component Leaders with multiple opportunities for growth (for themselves and Components). The Regional Directors have had multiple phone conferences to develop a fun, informative session that promises to get everyone in attendance involved with their presentation.

Fall is a busy time for me because I get the opportunity to attend Component meetings, providing education and represent ASPAN. I hope each of you will take the opportunity offered through these activities to gain education that will support you in your daily practice. I will also be working for you (and all the patients you serve) when I attend

the Standards & Guidelines meeting in October. This is the time when we comb through the current Standards book to ensure that we are encouraging practices that are evidence-based and current. It’s an intense three and one-half days that produces exhaustion and pride in the work that has been accomplished.

I encourage you to get involved with this dynamic organization that helps you deliver safe care each day you have the privilege to place your hands on patients. Contact your leaders and offer your assistance. It doesn’t have to be a big and fancy offering! Just get involved. The benefits of involvement with the Component will never disappoint you!

Happy re-entry into the structure of the fall season.

HEALTH AND HAPPENINGS

Summer 2017 Volume 44 Issue 3 11

HEALTH AND HAPPENINGS

As kids are heading back to school and into their daily routines, why not make a new routine for yourself? We all know the benefits of exercise, but for many, it is a challenge to make it a part of daily life. The following tips can help you make exercise a habit you can stick with.

Make it fun! Exercise can and should be enjoyable. Don’t like running? Try a Zumba class! Experiment with different activities until you find a few that work for you.

Use the buddy system: Working out is way more fun when you have a friend. And as an added bonus, having a friend that you are supposed to meet will help to hold you accountable on the days when you don’t feel like exercising.

Just do it! Tired? Crabby? Just not feeling like moving? Tell yourself you only have to move for 10 minutes. If you’re still not feeling into it, then you can quit. Chances are, once you get moving you’ll feel better and log more time.

Make a plan: Research shows that people who make a plan every week for when they will exercise are more than twice as likely to get a workout in than those who don’t have a plan.

Timing is everything: The absolute best time to plan a workout is early morning. Think about it… what’s going to interfere with your 5am workout? Practically nothing! You just have to get out of bed. 5pm workout? I can think of about a dozen things. Commit to trying the early morning workout… it will get easier. If you chose to go later, pack a bag and go straight from work. Even the best intentions can be foiled by stopping at home first.

Treat yourself: Have a favorite TV show? Podcast? Maybe a killer 80’s music mix. Tell yourself that you can only watch or listen while you are exercising and you can trick yourself into looking forward to exercising!

It takes about 6 weeks of commitment to really make exercise a habit, but once that habit is formed, you’ll find you’re missing it on days when you don’t exercise! So grab a friend! Make a plan. Find something you enjoy (or at least tolerate) and get started! The beginning will be the hardest, but if you can stick with it you will form one of the healthiest, most beneficial habits of your life.
