elcome to Breeze, the magazine from Southampton Airport – the Top UK Airport, no less!

You can read more about our latest award on page 5. We’re delighted that Wanderlust readers voted for us as the best airport in the UK. It’s a great credit to the brilliant team that we have working at Southampton Airport, who have a real focus on customer service. Thanks also to all of our passengers who took the time to vote.

This month we’re taking a tour of Spain and her islands – preparing you for the summer holiday season, with in-depth features on Malaga, Alicante and Majorca. We’ve also taken a look at the romantic destination of Verona in our ‘reasons to visit’ article.

New for this issue, we’re delving into the world of holiday fashion. And fi nally we’ve got £100 M&S vouchers up for grabs in this month’s competition. See page 42 for details.

AIRPORTNEWS

NEW SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT WEBSITE

SOUTHAMPTON Airport led a brand new initiative to the Channel Islands, to promote tourism in Hampshire and to position the airport as a gateway to London using the excellent rail links available. Visiting both Jersey and Guernsey, the successful event even had a special appearance from Peppa Pig, of Peppa Pig World.

Paultons Park (home of Peppa Pig World), Beaulieu, SeaCity Museum, Southampton Art Gallery, Tudor House & Gardens, The Ageas Bowl, South West Trains and Business South all joined the team from Southampton Airport to promote tourism and business opportunities in the region. Blue Islands, Flybe, Jersey Airport and Guernsey Airport were also part of the roadshow, promoting the increasing number of fl ights available into Southampton from the Channel Islands.

With a journey time of just 40 minutes, accessibility to the region from the islands is quick and easy.

Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport said “With more fl ight seats available between Jersey and Guernsey and Southampton Airport in 2014, it was the ideal time to highlight the great opportunities that this region has to offer visitors from the Channel Islands and the excellent transport links to London. This market continues to expand for us – in 2013 we saw a 6% growth on the previous year, with 323,134 passengers travelling between Southampton Airport and the Channel Islands.” Find out more about the link between the Channel Islands and London at www.southamptonairport.com/London-Link

Our destination pages have also had an overhaul with in-depth destination guides, a new interactive map and inspirational photographs throughout the site. Our blog is now located within the website and it’s even easier to book priority services, parking and fl ights. www.southamptonairport.com

SOUTHAMPTON Airport has been awarded the title of ‘Top UK Airport’ in the 2014 Wanderlust Readers’ Travel Awards. Southampton Airport topped the chart of UK airports with an impressive satisfaction rating of 87.5%. Final positions were based on an average score for the entry, converted to a percentage – meaning that the award was based on all-important satisfaction levels rather than the number of votes. Phoebe Smith, Wanderlust’s Editor

said: “With the discerning UK traveller increasingly preferring a more bijou airport

experience, it’s no wonder that Wanderlust readers have voted

Southampton as the Top UK Airport. With its good public transport links, great facilities and fl ights to 33 destinations from Aberdeen to Verona, it’s a worthy winner.”

SHE SAID “YES”SOUTHAMPTON Airport’s passengers were witness to a very special occasion on Valentines weekend when Manuel Bluel proposed to his girlfriend Francine Kingma using the information screens and an announcement over the tannoy. Manuel travels frequently through Southampton Airport and in December 2010 his fl ight to Frankfurt was cancelled due to snow. He was talking to a girl who was waiting at the gate for the same fl ight – Francine. They then queued together at the check-in desk to get new tickets for the next day. Francine lives in Bournemouth and wasn’t sure if her train would make it in time the next day, so Manuel offered for her to use his spare room in Fawley.

Flights over the next few days were disrupted again, so several days later they fl ew to Hannover together and drove to Frankfurt by car. That was the start of their relationship so Manuel wanted to propose at Southampton Airport – where it all started! Of course, Francine said “yes”.

TV personality Carol Vorderman made a fl ying visit to Southampton Airport in her Diamond DA40 as part of her campaign to fl y around the world in 2015. The former Countdown presenter and ‘Loose Woman’ started training to become a pilot last year and plans to be the ninth woman in history to fl y solo around the world. She visited Southampton to meet GPS fi rm, Garmin, to discuss plane navigation systems. In June 1937, one of Carol’s heroes, Amelia Earhart began her attempt to be the fi rst person ever to fl y around the world. Sadly a

month later she was reported missing after a failed attempt to fi nd and land on Howland Island in the middle of the Pacifi c Ocean. Carol Vorderman is planning to fl y Amelia Earhart’s planned route – a staggering 29,000 miles. Carol said: “We had a really warm welcome from everyone at Southampton Airport when we fl ew in with our small aircraft. The airport was really handy for our meeting about 10 minutes away by taxi…. a great day out.”

AIRPORT SPECIAL FEATURE

AIRPORT SPECIAL FEATURE

HERE TO HELPIF you’re a regular customer of Southampton Airport, it’s likely you’ve spotted our friendly team of Airport Ambassadors around the terminal. They’re the ones in the smart navy suits and lime green shirts – always sporting a smile (even at 6 o’clock in the morning!).

Our Ambassadors are here to help. Whether you need information, assistance or advice, they’re all on hand to meet your needs. It may be helping you to prepare for going through security, answering your questions about fl ights or providing fi rst aid assistance. Got a question about the local area or your onward journey? Our Ambas-sadors can assist with the help of their trusty iPads! You’ll also see them in our Priority Lounge ensuring that you have everything you need and carrying out passenger surveys which allow us to fi nd out about your journey.

On hand from 6am to 11pm,

they’re friendly, approachable and virtually unfl appable – no query is too bizarre.

l How to contact them: Look out for the team around the terminal or make your way to our Help Point and give them a call – they’re never too far away.

I really enjoy the role as it is very varied and no two days are ever the same – it allows me to use my people and communication skills and

my passion for helping people. I am always surprised by the diversity of passengers and enjoy meeting such interesting characters…. Every passenger has their own story to tell and it’s good to see people begin to relax as you chat to them when sometimes they arrive fl ustered or just unsure of the procedures. We are lucky that Southampton Airport is small enough for us to offer this service to our passengers and help them with the ‘Breeze Through’ experience. They often comment on how friendly the staff at the airport are and it’s good to be part of an integrated team, both airport staff and business partners who really care about the passengers. The small, friendly environment really helps them to be comfortable and feel at ease.

Lyn Cole, Airport Ambassador

14 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

IT’S the holiday destination that will give Brits some guaranteed sunshine.

Every year Malaga soaks up an average of 1,901 hours of sunshine and on average, rain only falls on 70 days a year.

It has one of the warmest winters in Europe and the summer season lasts eight months, from April to November.

But there is so much more to the southern Spanish province than sun, sea and beaches.

Nestled in front of mountains and less than a three-hour trip from Southampton Airport, the capital of the province, also called Málaga, is the fi fth most populated city in Spain with more than 560,000 inhabitants.

And it is not just people that are drawn

to the city. It is also a stopping point for hundreds of migratory species and the Natural Park Montes de Málaga is home to more than 230 plant species and more than 160 types of vertebrates.

At about 2,800-years-old, it is one of the oldest cities in the world and has been nominated as a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture. The historic centre of the city includes archaeological remains and monuments from the Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian eras.

History enthusiasts are drawn to the 11th century Arabic fortress Palace of Alcazaba adjacent to the ruins of a Roman theatre dating to the 1st century BC.

The city also boasts the 14th century,

which housed troops to protect the Alcazaba, giving visitors spectacular views across the city.

Tourists are also drawn to see the birthplaces of Pablo Picasso, Hebrew poet and Jewish philosopher Solomon Ibn Gabirol and actor Antonio Banderas, who were all born in Málaga.

But for some downtime, there are 16 beaches including lively urban beaches of La Malagueta, Pedregalejo or San Andrés to bays including Baños del Carmen or Peñón del Cuervo.

For those who want to go further afi eld, Gibraltar is just an hour and a half’s drive away.

The British overseas territory boasts a network of Second World War tunnels

excavated between 1939 and 1944 by the Royal Engineers and Canadian Engineers which were opened to the public in 2005.

The country is home to the Barbary macaques which have lived on the Rock of Gibraltar for centuries and tourists who take a boat out to sea will also get to see fl ying fi sh and dolphins.

But for travellers who would rather see the city from above, cable cars run from the Alameda Gardens to the top of the Rock.

Another destination just a short drive from Málaga airport is Grenada, home to The Alhambra, the most visited monument of Spain.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site was built as a small fortress in 899 but was renovated in the mid 11th century by the Moorish king Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Kingdom of Granada and then converted

into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I Sultan of Granada.

And on the outskirts of Grenada is the 16th century Monasterio de San Jerónimo, with stained glass windows and where the nuns still sing vespers.

Visitors can also see the tomb of Gonzalo de Córdoba, known as El Gran Capitán and the Catholic Monarchs’ military man who was put to rest in the building and buy almond cookies baked by the nuns.

And south of Grenada is Motril, a coastal village featuring Arab-Spanish design, the baroque style city hall and the sanctuary of the Virgin of Cabeza, the patron saint of the village, erected over the former residence of the mother of King Boabdil. It also has an important fi shing port and beaches including La Joya, Poniente and Carchuna.

Holidaymakers may want to plan their trip around Málaga’s key events to soak up even more of the culture.

The city’s nine-day summer festival Feria de Málaga starts with a 30 minute light and fi rework display to classical music on August 9 to celebrate the merging of Malaga to the Castilian Crown.

On July 16, boats are decorated

and there is a fi reworks display to celebrate Virgen del Carmen, the patron of the sea and protector of seamen and the Eve of San Juan celebrations for the longest day of the year with fi rework displays and live music on the beaches take place on June 23.

With so much to do in southern Spain, it’s no wonder sun seekers are fl ocking to Málaga.

At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping make our passengers’ journeys as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.

December 2013: Dave Reynolds – NATS

In December, the National Air Traffi c Control Service (NATS) had technical problems with the ground communications system, causing disruption to fl ights across the UK. During this time Dave was extremely communicative with his Southampton Airport colleagues and made some tactical changes to the fl ight paths of aircraft fl ying to and from the airport, allowing us to reduce delays and disruption.

January 2014: Lyn Cole – Airport Ambassador

Lyn received a number of glowing compliments about her kindness and customer service throughout January. During weather disruptions, Lyn helped fi nd several passengers accommodation and ordered taxis. Lyn also assisted injured passengers returning from a snowboarding trip and looked after a lady and her 7 year old son who were returning to Jersey after the boy’s hospital treatment.

February 2014: Ray Jones – Engineering

When an issue threatened the operation of the airport in February, Ray, who was not on call for that particular weekend, was contacted to assist in getting the airport runway open. Ray took responsibility for redesigning the

works himself and put in a fully compliant

fi nal solution. Ray’s prompt, unselfi sh action saved a considerable amount of cost from further works and allowed the airport to open on time.

SOUTHAMPTON BASED CRUISE SHIPS SERVE SOME OF THE FINEST FOOD ON THE HIGH SEAS. KEITH HAMILTON TASTES SOME MOUTH-WATERING OFFERINGS FROM P&O CRUISES

Southampton based, P&O Cruises is assembling the cream of culinary talent as the “Food Heroes”, an unprecedented

line-up of the country’s celebrity chefs, on board its brand new supership, Britannia.

Britain’s favourite TV chef, James Martin will develop The Cookery Club, the fi rst cookery school on board a British cruise ship.

He will join award-winning master patissier ‘Cake Boy’ Eric Lanlard, in his fi rst venture at sea, a patisserie range in the Market Café at the heart of the ship’s spectacular atrium.

Established P&O Cruises favourites Marco Pierre White, Atul Kochhar and Olly Smith will lend their expertise to the varied culinary options on board ranging from speciality restaurants and wine bars through to gala dinners in the main dining rooms.

Passengers will be able to participate in hands on cookery tuition under the expert guidance of P&O Cruises’ famous fi ve culinary giants.

Guest chefs will also be on board in this state of the art cookery school which can hold classes of up to 24 people at a time.

When the biggest ship built for the British

cruise market sets sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton to the Mediterranean on March 14 next year it will mark a step change in holidays on the high seas.

As well as the new Cookery Club passengers taking a cruise on board Britannia will experience a choice of 13 different places to eat, a patisserie, charcuterie and a gelataria ice cream parlour.

P&O Cruises’ marketing director Christopher Edgington said: “We are incredibly honoured to have secured the services of the best chefs at sea.

“The addition of James Martin and Eric Lanlard on Britannia further enhances the already incomparable level of culinary excellence we are proud to offer across our fl eet.”

Britannia’s maiden season will see the ship sail from Southampton to the Mediterranean, Norwegian Fjords, Canary Islands and the Baltic Sea, as well as offering a range of short breaks and a special round Britain cruise.

The ship will then transfer to the Caribbean for the winter season sailing a range of 15 night fl y/cruise itineraries from Barbados.

SIR Ben Ainslie, Britain’s greatest ever Olympic sailor, ordered the loading of a giant golden container on to one of the world’s biggest ships to open Southampton’s brand new £100m berth.

Themed on the gold standard, the event highlighted DP World Southampton’s status as the UK’s number one performing container terminal, turning vessels around faster than any other British port.

The inauguration of the berth brought to an end one of the biggest engineering projects in the south; building a new 500 metre quay designed to handle the largest and deepest container vessels afl oat and on order.

Sir Ben said: “As someone who lives here in Hampshire, I know how the port of Southampton is at the centre of the region’s life and economy.

“So I am proud to be part of something that has such a big role to play in its future.”

After giving the order for one of the terminal’s straddle carriers to pick up the special golden container from the dockside, the four times Olympic gold medallist watched as it was then transferred on board the deck of the container vessel, CMA CGM Marco Polo.

DP World Southampton’s managing director, Chris Lewis said: “The opening is a momentous day in the history of the port, with the 500 metre long new quay, the fi rst for nearly 20 years, designed to ensure the port can continue to handle the very biggest container ships long into the future.”

DESTINATION REASONS TO GO TO...

REASONSTO GO TO...

VERONA

While Verona may be a lesser known city in the region, there are plenty of things to do and places to visit. words by Ed Stilliard

It is the city where star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet met their ill-fated end and where

celebrated Renaissance artist Ve-ronese was born.

Set in the Veneto region in North-ern Italy Verona is a welcome retreat from the tourist-clogged streets of Venice not far from the idyllic lake.

But don’t go there expecting a weekend in a rural backwater, while Verona may be dwarfed by its neighbour, there is more than enough to fi ll a week.

Standing head and shoulders over the city is the Roman Arena – the third largest in Italy after the coliseum in Rome and the amphitheatre in Capua – where opera buffs can catch world-class performances.

Located in the city’s main square, Piazza Bra, the elliptical shape enhances the acoustic quality of the performances allowing 30,000 fans to rejoice in the majesty of Italian opera.

Some of the highlights from this year’s calendar include Placido Domingo singing Giuseppe Verdi’s back catalogue of arias, Bizet’s Car-men, Verdi’s Aida, and of course, Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet.

They may have been completely fi ctional but Shakespeare fans can take heart in the fact that the Italians have adopted the world’s

most romantic couple as their own and built shrines to them.

Romantics fl ock to Juliet’s House in Via Cappello to stand under the stone balcony of this 14th century house. Visitors can go inside and stand on the balcony to call out for their Romeo.

Die-hard fans of Shakespeare, can also seek out the Tomba di Guilietta, a cloister in Via del Pontiere, which the Veronese will try to convince you is Juliet’s fi nal resting place.

But there is fact as well as fi ction to Verona.

Standing in the Piazza dei Signori stands Verona’s early-Renaissance Loggia del Consiglio , the 15th-century city council (not open to visitors) and through the archway at the far end of the piazza are the open-air Arche Scaligere – elabo-rate Gothic tombs of the Scaligeri family where murderers are interred next to the relatives they killed.

For food or simply just to sit and watch the world go by head to Pi-azza delle Erbe, formerly a Roman forum, which is ringed with buzz-ing cafes and some of Verona’s most beautiful buildings.

Separating Piazza delle Erbe from Piazza dei Signori is a monumental gate known as Arco della Costa, hung with a whale’s rib that, ac-cording to legend, will fall on the fi rst just person to walk beneath it,

Page 29: Breeze Magazine

SUMMER 2014 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 29

although plenty of popes and kings have ventured forth underneath it.

Dividing the two piazzas, is the striped Torre dei Lamberti which rises a neck-craning 85m offering panoramic views of the city and

nearby mountains, and was com-pleted in 1463 – too late to notice invading Venetians.

Oozing with Italian charm and grace, Verona is the perfect hidea-way for the cultured tourist.

32 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2014

T’S a party island best known for its nightlife and sandy beaches.

Surrounded by the sun-soaked Mediterranean Sea, Majorca is the largest of the four Balearic Islands

which attract more than 10 million visitors a year.

Like its sister islands, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, many of the tourists come for the lively nightlife throughout the summertime.

But it is also a great destination to go hiking, play golf or indulge in some culture while visiting its mountains, coves and beaches.

As the plane swoops towards the capital city of Palma de Majorca the fi rst thing that will catch passengers’ eyes is the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma which dominates the skyline.

The impressive gold limestone building dates back to 1229 when King James I of Aragon started its construction on the former site of an Arab mosque, but the cathedral of La Seu wasn’t fi nished until 1601.

The Gothic-inspired structure also has the largest stained glass windows in the world and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.

History lovers will also enjoy Bellver Castle built in Palma in 1309 by King Jaume II, King of Majorca.

The castle, which sits on top of a hill surrounded by a forest, became a military prison in the 18th century and it was temporarily turned into a mint in the 19th century.

The Sóller railway is great for those who want to venture out of the capital.

A daily train to the village has been running since 1912 and a tram, which has been running since 1913, will take visitors from the village to the Port of Sóller.

The route passes through beautiful orange and lemon groves, tiny villages and across the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range at which top altitudes reach 1,067 metres.

Sóller is home to 12,000 people and the bay attracts birds such as little egrets, Muscovy and mallard ducks, greylag geese and huge fl ocks of gulls.

Although visitors will still see a number of hotels there it is a little off the beaten track and shops, bars and restaurants tend to be quieter than those in the island’s main tourist areas like Magaluf.

Magaluf is to the south of Sóller and just 15 miles of Palma’s airport.

Every year its white sandy beach, bars and clubs attract thousands of holiday goers from Britain, Russia and Scandinavia, who mostly visit in July and August.

It has an array of tourist attractions including the Western Water Park, the Pirate’s Adventure dinner show and go-karting and water sports such as underwater diving, jet skiing and wind surfi ng.

The daring may also want to try the swimming challenge to Black Lizard Island – the Isla de sa Porrassa, where thousands of lizards scurry across the beaches.

On June 23 fi reworks will light up the sky and huge bonfi res will be lit in Palma’s Parc de la Mar for the Nic de Foc festival marking the start of the island’s summer fi estas.

Majorca is also a great place to play golf – contrary to popular belief golf is not a rich man’s game. Almost anyone can take up the sport with the smallest of investment.

But no one is denying it can get very expensive – especially when playing golf abroad.

The cost of fl ights, the hotel, meals and then green fees, let alone hiring clubs or paying for their transportation from home, can all add up.

Which is why the all-golf-inclusive Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel is an event

I

about to burst onto the Hampshire sports scene.

Why Hampshire? With the hotel situated just 15 minutes by taxi from Palma Mallorca Airport, with 63-holes of inclusive unlimited golf on offer, and fl ights available from Southampton – players from here can be in their hotel and on to the course within three hours of take-off.

Include the fact the all-inclusive-golf tag offers unlimited games on three courses just minutes from the lobby, free club hire and a free shuttle between the courses, as well as breakfast as part of the room deal, then it’s easy to see why the re-furbished Sheraton Arabella was full to capacity within weeks of its re-opening last autumn.

The fact the hotel comes equipped with a superb spa, both indoor and outdoor pools, fi ne dining restaurants and in-season kids clubs, there’s certainly a sense that this is a golf destination that can appeal to the whole family.

The hotel is located next to the 18 holes Arabella golf course Son Vida (par 71) which adjoins the property and is an easy stroll from the sun loungers and pool deck. It is ideal for an early morning game, or late afternoon sun-

downer where the chance for a return to dip in the pool after the eighteenth hole is completed is so tempting.

Guests can also use the 18 hole Son Muntaner (par 72) and Son Quint (par 72) courses as well as the 9 hole Son Quint Pitch and Putt (par 3), both venues just two minutes from the hotel by shuttle. Both the Son Muntaner and Son Quint courses have superb club houses and restaurant facilities.

Golf lessons as well as driving range facilities and youth golf activities are available at the courses for an additional charge.
