Tranquillity Holistic Therapy Centre run by KerriePlowman is a new therapy centre situated onBramcote Avenue, Chilwell. Offering an array ofluxurious chemical free, paraban free, organictreatments.

Kerrie qualified as an ITEC holistic therapist in 2004.She initially offered corporate chair massage tobusinesses but took a short career break from herbusy schedule, after the birth of her son, Jamie.Kerrie returned to work in 2009 and rented a room at

The Little London Herbal store in the middle ofNottingham. After a successful six months, building up a loyal client base, shedecided to move away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.Moving to a new, quieter shared location in Beeston meant that Kerrie could

widen her range of treatments. However, even though Kerrie found theambience much more conducive to her style of massage, she still wanted thefreedom of her own room and be able to offer clients the treatments theywanted at a time to suit their hectic lifestyles. So in April 2011 TranquillityHolistic Therapy Centre was born. “I always treat my clients how I would want to be treated, as an individual and

made to feel special, which is the way it should be”Visit the website www.tranquilityevents.co.uk or call Kerrie on 0115 9221919 and enjoy a totally unique and relaxing experience.

This is a ‘Who’s back’ rather than a ‘Who’s new’ asAngela isn’t new to driver training and nor is she newto the local area – she’s been an Attenborough resident for the past seven years, shehas however been in Australia for a year and is nowback to continue her driver training business.“My family had the opportunity to have a change oflifestyle for a year and who wouldn’t take it!” she says,

“but now it’s back to reality and time to get back to the job I really enjoy.”“The chance to help someone achieve one of life’s milestones is fantastic;you meet a nervous first-timer who often can’t believe they’ll be driving acar, changing gear and taking the first step to passing their test by the endof their first lesson – it’s a great feeling for them and me,” says Angela.

She became a qualified instructor in 2004 and since then has helpedcountless people pass their test, continue with Pass Plus training and evengiven qualified drivers assistance with an area of their driving they haven’tbeen happy with. “I had one client who had taken nine driving tests before coming to me and

had no confidence in their driving ability. We worked at it and on our secondtest together we got the Pass, it was a brilliant result and the reason I lovewhat I do!” For more details contact Angela on 07776071996

A constant desire, throughout the whole of my career, has been to teach piano, keyboard and music theoryto people of all ages. As is typical of the twenty-first century, we seem to be presentedwith an overwhelming excess of choice. In every field of society andculture, there are more and more options to choose from, with less and less definition to separate or distinguish. So how do you make the right choice and retain your own individuality?

It seems increasingly tough to know what you want, and who you are. The more choice we have the more we look the same. Perhaps the key is tomake the decisions using your needs rather than your wants – what doesthe weather call for? What is sensible and versatile for my job and mypersonal life? What clothes are easy to wash or easy to travel and pack?

One staple that really does require a sensible decision is coats. The rightwinter coat can last you for life – I am sure we all have one infamous familycoat, perhaps an old sheepskin creature from the 70s, or one of mum’s bigcamel-haired cover-ups that teaches us this.

And a good coat should be stylish whilst never quite being in fashion. After all, fashion fades but style remains. And we certainly don’t want a coatdisappearing on us in the middle of winter. Of course the obstaclesbetween us and the ideal coat are time and money. We don’t want to spendweeks searching for this one item of clothing – nor do we want to have totake out a second mortgage to get it.

Rainbows Hospice for Children & Young People covers the whole of the EastMidlands, although it is based in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

It was founded by Gail and Harry Moore, whose daughter, Laura, had died of Leukaemiain 1989. Laura’s favourite thing in the world was a rainbow.

Since its official opening in April 1995 by HRH Prince of Wales, hundreds of life-limitedchildren, young people, their families, siblings, relatives and friends from across the EastMidlands have used the hospice.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare for children to die when they’re very young or towatch your child deteriorate slowly over a number of years.

In most cases, full-time care falls to the parents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Not surprisingly the whole family is under huge emotional, physical and financial strain.

Rainbows Children’s Hospice helps children and families in these situations with theemotional and physical challenges they face, helping them to make the most of life.

The rise in results at the Sixth Form has coincided with a rise in thenumber of students choosing Bluecoat for their Post-16 education. The Sixth Form has grown by 100 students since 2006/07 to reachits current size of 320. More than half of the students from theSchool’s Aspley Lane campus and Wollaton Park campus choose tostay on into the Sixth Form and are joined by many students whoenroll after completing their GCSEs at other Nottinghamshireschools.

Help the Heroes!“At Young Rascals we believe that

children’s learning and basic skills for lifecan be learnt through many differentways.

Through topics, games, circle times andactivities, the children can learn moreabout the environment and the worldaround them.

A local soldier came to visit and spoketo the children about his life away from

home, how he helps build schools for children whoare less fortunate and helping the local people.

The children were very interested and asked lots of questions about hisuniform and flying in a plane. They also enjoyed trying on his collectionof hats and looking at photos he had brought in!

We talked to the children about how different a soldier’s life is awayfrom home with regards to sleeping and eating and decided it would benice to send paintings and gift boxes out to where they are posted.

By doing such an activity it helps the children with their communicationskills with regards to showing an interest in the world in which they liveand commenting on questions asked. The children have built dens inside and outside of the nursery and have

used their imagination skills for outdoor living”.Young Rascals Day NurseryTel 0115 967 79515 City Road, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 2LQ

From helpingpooches with afondness forpants to pacifyingirate hamsters onthe Paul O’GradyShow, MarcAbraham’s comic talesfrom his career as a vetmake him the ideal hostfor this year’s LovePetsShow.

Marc, who will be widely recognised asresident vet on ITV’s This Morning,Daybreak and BBC Breakfast News, takescentre-stage at the two-day animalextravaganza in Peterborough thisOctober, which welcomes people whoare passionate about their pets to enjoya great-value family day out.

Over the LovePets Show weekend ofSaturday 29 and Sunday 30 October,Marc will be giving live talks covering awide variety of pet topics, answeringquestions from the audience andsharing anecdotes from his days as a veton call in an emergency clinic.“The LovePets show is all set to be a

brilliant family attraction because ithighlights so many different aspects ofthe animal world in a fun, interactiveway,” explained Marc. “For example, there will be assistance dogsdemonstrating their working skills, including guide dogs, hearing dogs andPets as Therapy (PAT) that are taken to

visitpeople inpoorhealth.There willalso be

reptiles andbirds, exotic

creatures andsome

particularlystrange-looking

insects! “The LovePets Show

brings these wonderful animalstogether for people to meet, andpromises visitors a huge feel-goodfactor. People booking tickets for thisevent will find out lots of newinformation about animals, as well aslearning about responsible petownership.”

Marc, a vet for 16 years, admits he stillgets excited about meeting unusualanimal species that he wouldn’tnormally see in his day-to-day workinglife. “I have a geeky side when it comesto animals, particularly birds of prey,” headded.  “To be around people who areequally passionate about their favouritespecies or breeds is something I’m reallylooking forward to.”

Now a regular guest vet on TV andradio, Marc has dealt with his fair shareof animals misbehaving on live shows, and while he hopes the furry andfeathered guests don’t get up to anyfunny business at LovePets, he’s wellprepared for some diva-ishperformances when they take thelimelight.“Once I was asked to determine the sex

of a hamster on the Paul O’Grady Show,”said Marc, “It should have been very

straightforward, but when I turned the littlelady over to show theaudience what to look for,she bit my finger extremelyhard. You can’t swear on alive programme with fourmillion viewers – but a littlehamster pushed me veryclose! Working with animalson a live show definitelydoesn’t always go to plan.”

As well as the lighter sideto working as a vet, Marc is akeen supporter of animalwelfare projects and hasenjoyed volunteering foranimal charities working inMumbai and the Amazon. He also supports a personalcampaign against puppyfarming in the UK called PupAid, raising awareness

among prospective dogowners about how to choose a puppyfrom a reputable rescue home orresponsible breeder.“I don’t have any pets at the moment,

because I work long hours and itwouldn’t be fair to keep an animal athome all day,” said Marc. “But when I dohave the time, I’d like to adopt a dogfrom The Oldies Club, which findspermanent homes for rescued dogsaged over seven years old. Older dogsmake excellent companions, and theyare usually very obedient and alreadyhouse-trained.”The LovePets show will offer a wealth of

information on being a responsible pet-owner, and is supported by The KennelClub, which will be on-hand to answerquestions on choosing the right puppyfor your family, to rescuing particularbreeds. They will also be promoting theYoung Kennel Club for children with aninterest in canines.

Meanwhile, celebrity dog trainer KarenWild will be providing masterclasses forthose keen to learn the best behaviourtechniques, and this year’s Britain’s GotTalent semi-finalist Pippa Langhorne willbe providing musical entertainment bysinging with her dog Buddy.

Last month we looked at theinitial cooling and generalchanges that plants aroundthe garden must go throughas temperatures get lowerand our beloved sun startsto hop over the horizon alittle sooner than we mightwish!

It’s certainly not all doomand gloom though - why notextend the pleasure you hadwhilst planting out yoursummer baskets & pots?

Many people shy awayfrom putting togetherwinter containers which is agreat shame, as it's the timeof year when we most needthe colour and greenery inthe garden.

The type of container isimportant: If you are using awooden one, line it withplastic to stop the woodrotting, whilst fibreglass orplastic containers don’t giveplant roots so muchprotection from frost as awooden container. You canthough, line plastic oneswith bubble wrap to help

insulate the roots. Don’t forget: terracotta containers must

be labelled 'frostproof' or they are proneto crack in the coldest days of the year.Always keep the container off the groundwith pot feet or wooden runners whichallow for drainage. In terms of types of plants - flowers are

colourful but many of them can sufferfrost damage. Try giving them someshelter by using tougher, taller foliageplants - at least then if they do get frostdamaged, you still have some evergreenplants to maintain the presence of thecontainer or hanging basket. As plant growth slows in winter, they

can be put in much closer together in thecontainer than with your summer plants.Put larger plants at the back though asusual.

Winter pansies along with winter-blooming heathers and cyclamen can besuitable at the front of a container &dwarf conifers and small shrubs especiallythose with berries like skimmia orgaultheria, at the back.

You can plant a container-grown tree atany time of year for lasting enjoyment.Try a bay tree, a standard holly or a rosethat will have glossy winter leaves and, insummer, scented flowers. Great forhanging those outdoor Christmas lightson later in the year!

The sharp end of an outdoor cactusgarden:

Did you know that cactus and succulentspecies can survive outdoors here in theUK? Did you also know that cactus fromlive from around twenty five to threehundred years old!

The potent drink Tequila is made from atype of cactus (the Agave plant) - so theseare a well established plant in humanculture worldwide and add a touch of theexotic to any garden.

Often seen as only an inside plant, thehardy cactus is capable of giving muchneeded relief from the drudgery of thewinter garden with it’s variety of shapesand textures.

Furthermore they are low maintenance -provided you take some care overinitial planting and subsequent siting.

Even in the depth of winter some typesof succulents (succulents are types ofplants that retain moisture) will flower, including some cactus.

How to get growing with cactus &succulents late autumn/early winter:

These types of plants need a very openand free-draining compost and a mixsuitable for cactus & plants such as aloevera can be made up very easily by usingJohn Innes No.2 type for seedlings andJohn Innes No.3 for older plants ofaround two years or older (ask for theseat your local garden or plant centre). THE NITTY GRITTYMix the compost with

horticultural grit using three partscompost and one part grit makingsure it’s all evenly mixed togetherwith no clumpy bits that mighthold onto the damp (which is whywe need the grit in there).

Don’t be tempted to use gardensoil or old used or stored compostwhere it may have been lyingaround for months. You must useproper horticultural grit and notbuilders grit or sand.

Use just the right size for eachplant, not too large. Gently pat thecompost around the roots, butdon’t overdo it - too much pressureis not necessary so keep thecompost nice and soft - it willsettle when the plant is watered ina few weeks (don’t waterimmediately). Re-pot no morethan once a year into the next sizeup. Larger plants only need re-potting as and when it becomesnecessary - if the plant hasoutgrown the pot or is clearly notthriving any longer.

Early Spring - the growing season- is the best time for re-potting.Don’t forget that you don’t waterthe plant when re-potted until ithas settled down for a few weeks

in mild or warm weather. As regards watering, a simple rule

of thumb is not at all in winter, andcertainly not in wet or overlydamp weather. cactus need tohave chance to dry off ifpossible. When you do water, make sure

you wet the compost and notthe plant - cactus growing is allabout keeping roots as dry aspossible and not letting themsit in damp or wet conditions.Water sparingly as cactus haveevolved to retain water for dryareas.Try to get your potted cactus

in a sheltered area, away fromany direct Arctic blast (such astops of pathways betweenhouses - the ‘wind tunneleffect).Cacti have few pests or

diseases. Mealy bug is the mostcommon - watering with asystemic insecticide willnormally get rid of them.Next summer butterflies may

come in too and lay their eggs,so watch out for caterpillarscome the winters end - after allyou don’t want to lose a friendthat you fostered all throughthe dark days of winter!

gardening5 STEPS TO A GREAT

LOOKING LAWN NEXTSPRING

Having a great lawn is the ambitionof many gardeners; it provides theperfect backdrop for the otherplants and features in the garden.Getting your grass looking at itsbest, however, is a year roundactivity here are our top tips forgetting your lawn in tip topcondition for next spring:

1. FertiliseAutumn lawn feeds help build athicker, greener lawn from the rootsup.

2. Control MossMoss is a real tell-tale plant. Themain reason for moss is surfacecompaction, with the moss thrivingon the layer of moisture unable todrain away on the surface of thelawn. The keys to avoiding a mossinvasion are good aeration, drainage and soil fertility, andavoiding scalping the lawn whenmowing.

3. AerateAeration is about enabling air andwater to penetrate to the roots, it’sessential for compacted lawns. Thisprocedure will also help with thecontrol of moss. Aeration helps to

reduce thatch and sub surface

soil compaction, which isnormally found on clay soils. For asmall lawn this can be done simplyby hand, or there are manyimplements for hire that can do thejob for you on larger areas.

4. ScarificationThis is a mechanical procedure forthe removal of decaying materialon the soils surface; this in turnopens channels for water, air andnutrients to get through to the soil.

5. Overseed Bare PatchesLeft untreated, bare patches exposeopen soil for the invasion of weeds.Autumn is a great time to sort outthe problem, and even rejuvenatethe complete lawn by doing thewhole lawn.

Alternatively call Greener Gardens, your local and independentlawncare specialist who willcomplete a free lawn analysisreport. This will detail the conditionof your lawn, and any problems thatmay exist. Thereafter you canchoose from our range ofaffordable professional lawntreatments applied by ourtechnicians to get your turf intotiptop condition.

LET YOUR HOMEMAKE YOU MONEY

Solar PV or ‘Photo Voltaic’ panels arelike little electricity generators on yourroof, they capture the sun light and turn it in to electricity which you can use or sell back to the electricity company.

Feed in tariffs are payments of43.3p/KWh (index linked) or unit ofelectricity generated on your roof. Youare then free to use it cutting yourelectricity bill or sell it back to theelectricity company, so you are gettingpaid twice. This sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced

these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across thecountry to install their own generators (solar pv) and help them meettheir climate change targets. These payments are government guaranteed for the next

twenty five years.• Start reducing your electricity bills immediately• Make you 43.3p per unit up to 3’400 Kwh (units) per year. *• The electricity you do not use goes into the national grid and you

are paid approximately 3.1p per unit.• You also do not have to pay for electricity you have produced so

there is a saving of another £250 per year on your electricity bill.*• A total saving of up to £1’760 per year.*• A reduction of CO2 produced by this clean green solar system by

approximately 30 tonnes over 25 years.*(Dependant on the size of system and orientation)

Castlefield Kennels are appealing once again for dogscurrently looking for new homes. If you can help why not

get in touch...

Whitey is a tubby female Staffie aged 2-3 years old she has been in since August and all thestaff are really desperate to see her in a loving family environment she is such a gentle natureddog.

Tequila is a female Staffie x she’s only a baby about 12- 20 weeks and this is such an importanttime for her in her development she really doesn’t need to be stuck in a kennel, she’s been insince August.

Dubonnet and Drambuie are 2 female wirecoated Jack Russell’s aged 18 months-2 yearsold, we believe they are sisters and ideally itwould be great if they could go to the samehome, but we are realistic and are prepared toseparate them if it means they get a newhome.

Cola is a male Shar-pei aged 12 – 18 monthshe has the best character and is so loving, he

must be the only pet though, and we wouldlike Cola to go to a home that has got experience with this breed.

Castlefield has been doing rescue work now since 2000, workingwith various councils over the years and some charities to tryand find dogs loving new homes. “We are not really well know inthe “Rescue” world and just want to promote the kennels a littlemore. The amount of dogs goes up year by year and we don’tthink it will ever stop since January 2011 we have had in over500 dogs luckily most of them get reclaimed but the rest wehave to find good homesfor.

We are  by no means abig rescue but that isstill a huge number ofdogs looking for new

homes, and we want toget it right for them the second time round.

We also have a male Large crossbreed aged 9 months -1 year looking for a new home, afemale Border Terrier aged 2-4 years old, a Wire fox terrier aged 4-6 years old that was ina terrible state when he came into kennels, and 2 female Labs 1 chocolate and the otheris yellow they came in together Coco is 2-4 year old the yellow 1 who we have namedChamie is aged 5-7 years old.

We believe that back street breeders are a huge part of the problem, they are not like rep-utable breeders who breed and sell dogs for the sheer love of the breed. Back street breeders don’t care about the dogs they arebreeding with, who they are selling the pups to  they are just in it for the money and that is why 80% of rescues up and down thecountry are full, and they are mostly staffies or some sort of bull breed, they are one of the most popular breeds of  pet, but alsoare the hardest to rehome especially from a rescue centre, they are seen as nasty temperamental stubborn and vicious dogs, andin some cases this can be true but it’s not just a trait in Staffies any dog can be nasty if they are not raised properly. The publicdon’t get to see the loving, loyal and utter stupidity of a Staffie they really are a lovely breed , and I know most people readingthis will of made their own opinion on certain breeds and that’s fine, but if I can change the opinion of 1 person it will be worthit”.

Visit their web site www.castlefieldkennels.co.uk click on the adopt a stray section which will have all the dogs on look-ing for a new home. They also have a Facebook page Castlefield dog rescue, were there are photos of dogs currently look-ing for a new home

Children’s HospicesUKChildren’s Hospices UK wants thebest possible care for children andyoung people who are not expectedto reach adulthood and their families. We support all children’s hospiceservices by campaigning andlobbying governments to ensuretheir voice is heard; helping their carestaff to continue to be at the cuttingedge of children’s hospice care;making everyone aware of their vitalwork; and raising funds to ensurethey are sustainable.

About children’s hospice servicesIt’s every parent’s worst nightmare to be told their child will diebefore them. But for an estimated 23,500 families across the UK,this is a reality. Some of these children will die when they’re veryyoung; others will deteriorate slowly over a number of years. Inmost cases, full-time care falls to the parents – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Not surprisingly the whole family is underhuge emotional, physical and financialstrain.

Children’s hospice services help childrenand families in these situations with theemotional and physical challenges theyface, helping them to make the most oflife. They welcome the whole family for abreak in a home-from-home environmentor in the comfort of their own home. Theyalso offer a diverse range of other servicesincluding symptom control, end-of-lifecare, the provision of therapies (such asplay, art and music therapy) andbereavement support for all familymembers. There are 42 children's hospices in operation across the UK and a

further three in development. Each service is an independentcharity which relies on public support to continue their work.
