With the Queen’s Card, a basket offlowers from Broxtowe BoroughCouncil - presented by the Mayor, Cllr.Jacky Williams and a special BirthdayCake, Fred Riley was reduced totears as he thanked everybody in apacked Village Hall at Attenborough.

Fred, born in Styring Street, Beeston, has lived in Attenborough since 1969and is a very well known character inthe village where he still lives on hisown, looked after on a regular basis byhis 73-year-old eldest daughter Pat,who pops over from Long Eatonseveral times a week.

Fred, a widower, also has another daughter, Barbara who livesin South Wales. He has three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Fred well remembers his childhood and his schools, MeadowLane and Nether Street. He also recalls his motor cycling dayswhen he competed in motocross and grass track events.

A joiner all his working life - and he worked until he was 83 ! -he remembers with pride that he was with Hoftons for thirtyyears.  He suffered a severe injury to his left hand when he was19 which denied him from entering the war - but keen to dohis bit he joined the Auxillary Fire Service part-time.

On such a wonderful occasion as his 100th Birthday Party, thelast words certainly belong to Fred Riley. “I like a shot of whisky and the occasional cigar. A small one

mind you -and, oh, by the way, I don’t know why everybodyhas always called me Fred. My names John.”  Good old Fred!

ELIZABETH'S STORY:

“I stayed because I believed him andthought no-one could help”.

I'm fat, ugly, lazy and a bad mother. No-one else will want me.I can't cook, I have no money, I can't take the kids away from their family, friends and all they know, where would I go?, I'm mad, no-one will believe me, I could not cope on my own.I have no friends, my family have disowned me, he and the kids are all I'veleft. He says he'll kill me.

I heard it so often during our six year relationship, I believed it.I left him once before but he found me like he said he would. ‘He taught

me lesson’. On this occasion he had hurt me quite badly. I had to go to the hospital. He refused to leave me alone but a nurseinsisted he left. She asked me how I hadsustained my injuries. I told her I had ‘fallendownstairs’.

She did not believe me and insisted I contacted Midlands Women's Aid. She saidthey could help.

I wish I'd listened to her then but it took afurther assault by him to make me contactthem. It was the best decision I ever made.

I went with my children to a Refuge. I was scared and upset.

I was surprised how comfortable and cleanthe accommodation was. My children settledin quite quickly. The staff were very supportive. They

listened, believed me and gave me thestrength to survive. They encouraged meback into education. They made me realizethat it was not my fault. I got back in touch with my family who had onlystayed away because of him. I made many good friends in Refuge andthey and the staff showed me I was not alone.

Life in Refuge wasn't all easy but it was much easier than what I had putup with living in an abusive relationship.

It's now five years since I left my old life behind. I have a good job, mychildren are happy and doing well at school and I have got my old self back. I still keep in touch with MidlandsWomen's Aid and support their work where I can.

"I'm not fat or lazy, I'm a goodmother, I can cook, I'm sane, I havemy own income, a healthyrelationship with a new partner andmost importantly I'm free, safe andalive"

IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT !

YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT!

Contact Midlands Women’s Aid.112, Derby Road, Stapleford,Nottingham, NG9 7AU or visit thedrop-in every Wednesdaybetween10.30am - 1pm, wherewomen and children can accessadvice.

breezeappealRare Disease Day began in 2007 as an initiative of a few European countries to raise awareness ofrare diseases. Now, five years later, Rare DiseaseDay is marked by patients, families and those with an interest in rare diseases across the world.2012 is an especially significant year in the RareDisease Day movement as it represents a return to the official date – the 29th February (a rare day that occurs only every four years).

The theme for Rare Disease Day 2012 is ‘solidarity’. This reflects the importanceof collaboration among all those who are affected by rare diseases and thosewho deliver vital care and support to patients. Numerous groups have a role toplay including patients, carers, charities, researchers, clinicians, healthprofessionals, industry and policy makers. The theme of Solidarity also reflectsthe need for patients affected by rare diseases to unite behind one commonvoice to ensure that their views are heard and their needs are responded to.

There are over 6,000 known rare diseases and despite the vast range ofconditions, each with different symptoms and outcomes patients affected byrare diseases generally face common problems in accessing the services andsupport they need. These problems can include:long delays in getting a correct diagnosis; misdiagnosis and often multiplemisdiagnoses – frequently doctors think a patient has an unusual presentationof a common condition;lack of information to patients and professionals about the disease; lack ofscientific knowledge of the disease – often there will be little understandingabout how a disease affects the body, or what the outcome for the patient willbe; no appropriate treatment for the condition – there are no effective treatmentsfor most rare diseases and very few can be cured; significant social consequences; lack of appropriate quality healthcare;difficulties in access to treatment and care and there are often “postcode lotteries”in access.Rare Disease UK (RDUK), the national alliance for people with rare diseases and

all who support them, are active in highlighting these issues and in campaigningfor policy to be made to improve services for patients. Soon the Governmentwill be unveiling proposals for a UK rare disease plan, which RDUK hopes willaddress the problems outlined above which will lead to better outcomes forpatients and their families.

The message of Rare Disease Day is that by coming together to raiseawareness of these problems and the possible solutions, the rare diseasecommunity is stronger. Although each disease may be rare when viewed inisolation, collectively, rare diseases are not rare and together a difference canbe made!Courtesy of Stephen Nutt – Executive Officer, Rare Disease UKFor more information please see:Rare Disease Day website – www.rarediseaseday.orgRare Disease UK website – www.raredisease.org.uk

Mike will have ten weeks Chemo, a break then hisoperation then rest and then a further ten week cycle ofChemo so in total we are looking at 9-12 months of pain, heartache, strength, love, courage, break downs, and allthe above side effects. There is a special facility where we can all go to getadditional support and chill out, its called MAGGIE’S, wevisited Maggie’s on Friday and felt so safe andcomfortable. This rare form of Cancer was a routine checkup at thedentist for an abscess that now would mean he loses halfhis top jaw and possibly his left eye. We are hoping that we can do something positive to helpfundraisng efforts to to raise money Maggie’s. Three local women have been presented with special awards by Girlguiding Nottinghamshireto show how much their enthusiasm and commitment is appreciated across Attenboroughand Toton.

Angela Smith, Helen Kirk and Veronica Watson were presented with GirlguidingNottinghamshire’s Oak Leaf badges by Assistant County Commissioner Joanne Bardgett. Theyhad been nominated for the awards on behalf of the Attenborough District by new AssistantDistrict Commissioner Carolyn Huckerby, who says ‘We wanted to recognise the hard workwhich Angela, Helen and Veronica have put in over the last three years to make theAttenborough District so successful.’

Carolyn goes on to explain: ‘When the previous Commissioner stepped down in 2008,Angela, Helen and Veronica suggested running things as a team. With nearly 300 members,Attenborough is one of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s busiest Districts and at that stage no-one felt able to commit to running it alone for a three-year tenure. The concept of managinglocal Guiding in this way was relatively new, but they proved it can work very successfully.’  Success indeed: during their term of office, three new units opened in the district - including

a Rainbow Unit (for girls aged 5-7), a Guide Unit (ages 10-14) and a Senior Section Unit foryoung women aged 14 and over. Eighteen new adult leaders were also recruited, helping toensure that Guiding in this part of Nottinghamshire continues to flourish.

Between them, Angela, Helen and Veronica also managed several sub-teams who wereresponsible for specific activities like raising funds to enable local girls to enjoy GirlguidingUK’s year-long programme of centenary celebrations. This included a Christmas Fair, bag-packing in local supermarkets, carol singing and a disco, together with a calendar featuringphotographs from every unit.As part of the three-way split, Angela Smith took on responsibility for managing the Guide

section across the Attenborough District. In addition to running the 1st Toton Guides, sheprovided much-valued support to new Guiders and led local contingents on camps. Thisculminated in taking an 80-strong party from Attenborough to Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’sKnotts 2010 centenary camp. While Angela was looking after the Guides, Helen Kirk offered to be District Commissioner

for the Brownie section. This role ranged from coordinating a memorable Adventure Day toassuming the role of leader with 4th Attenborough Brownies while the assistant leader wascompleting her training. Helen is now Division Commissioner for Beeston and continues torun 2nd Toton Rainbows. The third member of the team is Veronica Watson, who is now Assistant Commissioner for

the Beeston Division. As well as running 3rd Attenborough Rainbows, Veronica volunteeredto be District Commissioner for the Rainbow section, which included helping to establish the4th Attenborough Rainbows, coordinating the celebrations for Rainbows’ 21st birthday andensuring that even the youngest member of the local Rainbows took part in the centenaryevents. ‘The Oak Leaf award is unique to Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and highlights how much

we value the time and energy which people like Angela, Helen and Veronica put in to ensureour members make the most of life,’ says Carolyn Huckerby. ‘We may be one of the county’sbusiest districts but we still have girls waiting to join, and always welcome enquiries fromadults who feel they have something to offer.’

SOIL TYPES

There are five main types of soil found in thiscountry:

• Clay. very fined grained and smooth whenwet. Can be very difficult to work with as itdoesn’t drain as such but on the plus side itdoes have good moisture retention duringdry spells. Best dug in the Autumn soallowing the frost to help break it up readyfor spring. The use of lime - sprinkled on anddug in - helps to reduce its stickiness andopens up the soil. Also, this will be wetter forlonger so it tends to be a ‘late’ planting soil i.eplanting can’t take place early in the springso any food crops will be ready later thancrops grown in more sandy soils.

• Sand. This is a lighter soil type (less than10% clay content) and, due to it’s content, tends to warm up much more quickly inspring which allows for earlier planting. It canbe worked year round but does need morecare with watering and plant food as itcontains less plant nutrition than clay soil.

• Loam. In short this is a blend between thetwo soil types above. This mix of clay andsand (which can vary depending on location)is considered to be the best soil for a largerrange of plants. Having the nutrition that ispresent in clay with the better drainage ofsand type soil yields a nice balance whichmakes life easier for the gardener - especiallythe novice!

• Chalk. Usually deficient in plant nutritionand requires additional help in the form ofmanure etc. Like clay this type of soild getssticky and difficult to manage but yet doesnot retain moisture either! They dry easily inhot spells.

• Peat. This is usually found in low lying areasand is derived from marsh land which hasbeen subject to thousands of years of growthand decay. Referred to as ‘sour’ due to theirlack of lime, these soils contain more than20% humus (the part of soil which is made ofold decayed leaves and other plant materialalong with any dead insects etc - thebiological component of soil). Peat soils are,in a sense, the opposite of chalky soils in thatthey are acid and therefore the use of limeand other additions such as sand (to improvedrainage) greatly benefit them for gardeningpurposes.

This month we take a look at all round generalgardening knowledgeahead of the spring season yet to come.It seems as if an ‘expert’ gardener has somemagical power that enables them to growvirtually anything out of anything and, ifthings go wrong, intuitively know how toput things right - such as pest control. This mistaken idea comes from the novice’s

lack of basic knowledge in understandingwhat plant types need in order to grow andflourish.

By looking at a few basic factors whichcome into play in every garden environmentwe hope to empower the novice and takethem on a stage further, after which they canliterally take their hobby as far as they wishto. In looking at these easy to understand

fundementals we really are giving those whohave not succeeded before the chance to enjoythe sense of reward that gardening can give - inall its many aspects. So don’t give up - read onand pick up a few straightforwad to use tips andenjoy the journey with us....

BASIC PLANT TYPES

• Hardy Perennials. These will survive outside, growing back backeach year (Perennial) and includes shrubs, trees

along with herbaceous plants that will often diedown during the winter, growing from roots orcrowns again the following spring. These needto be placed with care and thought if they are tothrive as they will be there for many years.

• Tender Perennial.Often known as half-hardy perennial - they allneed protection from frost. These plants includemost greenhouse or house plants, and thoseplants which go dormant in winter e.g dahlias.

• Hardy Biennial. Many root vegetables are hardy biennials, because they are sown one year and flower thenext.

• Hardy Annual. These can withstand frost, but usually grow, flower and die within one year. As they can copewith cold temperatures, some can be sown inthe autumn to produce flowers the followingsummer. Excellent for containers or as asupplement to herbaceous perennials andshrubs.

• Tender Annual. If these plants get frost damaged, they will die,so only plant out when the last of the frostoccurs - usually around the middle of May. Theseplants can be grown under glass earlier thanthis, so when planted out they will have a goodstart. If you don’t have a coldframe orgreenhouse they can be sown outside in earlyMay. With the Autumn frosts they will soon diethough.

The subsoil - that which is below about a foot in depth (orless in some cases as some gardens are only a few inchesover hard rock) is also part of any outdoor soil structure. The subsoil may be similar in nature to the ‘top soil’ but may

not contain the goodness of that which is above it. Thegeneral approach in gardening is to get the top soil to asgreat a depth as possible.Drainage is the key aspect of what the subsoil may be

responsible for - with a clay subsoil causing problems duringperiods of wetter weather for instance (this can be bigproblem with lawns). Long term problems with a growingarea may well have to take the subsoil into account.

Soil acidity balanceMany will be aware of the Ph scale and it is nothing to befrightened of! It is simply a way to measure & define howmuch or how little acid/alkaline there is, in a soil in this case. That’s it.The reason it matters is that if your plants don’t seem to

grow well in your garden you may well be trying to plantout flowers or crops that are not suited to the Ph within thesoil. If your plants are growing healthily then it’s safe to

assume all is well and there is no need to test the soil.Test kits are available from garden centres etc - and are

inexpensive, involving a few simple steps to get a resultinstantly so you know where you are soil wise.In general you can add lime to raise the PH level and a

form of sulphure to lower it - both available widely within

garden outlets. Changing the Ph can takeseveral applications of whichever you areapplying - and it is best not to rush in andsimply ‘dump’ lime or sulphur to try andget a quick fix. Give the soil severalmonths to absorb the compounds andthen retest. Further ‘top up’ applicationsmay well be needed from time to time infuture to prevent the PH drifting back towhat it was.It is sometimes easier to simply find

plants that suit the existing Ph in yourgarden environment.

We will cover more on plant types foreach garden scenario in a future issue. Inthe meantime do your homework andmaybe get out and test your soil, ahead ofthe growing season. Take a look at your soil with the knowledge gained in this

article and gain a mental picture of what type of gardentype you have. Then, when you next go to buy some plantsto brighten up your garden, or to grow some new crops, you will be a long way ahead in achieving what you hopedrather than seeing your efforts wasted. As always, enjoy your gardening and use this ‘quiet time’

to learn a few of the basics - and impress your friends thissummer with your new found ‘green fingers’ Enjoy!
