Village Singers – Christmas Concert

On Friday 14th December the Village Singers invite you to jointhem at their Christmas Concert, when they hope, with your help,to bring some cheer into the lives of our local homeless.

Performing a wide range of their Christmas favourites, theevening promises to be a wonderful curtain raiser to the ChristmasSeason. The Christmas Concert takes place in the Oasis Church, commencing at 7.30pm. Admission is £5 donation.

All the proceeds from the evening will go to support the CanaanTrust, the local independent charity which providesaccommodation and 24-7 support to the homeless of our local

communities. Michelle Cassidy, Musical Director of

the Village Singers commented,“Every member of the choir wantedto help raise awareness of theexistence of homelessness in ourarea. No-one chooses to behomeless, and this is especially trueat Christmas. Sadly, for many, it willbe the harsh reality which will greetthem on Christmas morning. With nofamily to bring cheer to their day, nopresents, no turkey – it’s just anotherday, with little or no hope. The choir, together with those who join us inconcert on the 14th December, hopeto at least provide some cheer to thehomeless. We plan to have a lungbursting and joyous evening.”Tickets for the Christmas Concert

can be obtained from the CanaanTrust Office on Main Street. Please ring 0115 946 4903 if youneed tickets posting out.

If for any reason you are not able tojoin the choir on the night then youcan still support their efforts. Make adonation via your mobile phone. Textthe words, ABED14 £ (state amountdonation) send it to telephone

JANUARY AT 7.30PMDirect from the West End Theatre Royal Bath Productions andChocolate Factory Productions present Abigail’s Party by MikeLeigh, Directed by Lindsay Posner.Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and

pineapple are on the coffee table…the social get-together fromhell is about to begin. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervousdivorcee Sue. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes,Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling eveningdescends into drunkenness and debauchery. Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it first

appeared as a BBC ‘Play For Today’ in 1977. It is a ruthlesslyaccurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a worldobsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrousBeverly.Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most influential theatre and film

Choosing aconveyancer orsolicitor whenbuying or sellingyour home isdifficult. We know that

some are good, and some arenot so good, butthe question ishow to knowwhich is which?

To help in this, the LawSociety launched its Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS). LawSociety President John Wotton said “CQS improves efficiency withcommon, consistent standards and service levels and enablesconsumers to recognise practices that provide a quality residentialconveyancing service.

"Buying a home is one of the largest purchases anyone will make intheir lifetime, so it is essential that it is done to the highest standardby a solicitor.”

Mortgage lenders have recognised the benefits of the CQS, withSantander and HSBC being just two which now require new solicitorson their panels to be CQS accredited. Also, the popular consumerfinance website, moneysupermarket.com, has urged first time buyersto seek out a CQS solicitor.

As such, it is understandable why Ellis-Fermor & Negus solicitors(with offices in Ripley, Belper, Long Eaton and Beeston) are pleased toannounce they are one of only a handful of local firms to have beenadmitted to the CQS.

Robert Meredith, Head of Conveyancing, stated:"This is recognition of the excellent service level we provide. It is a

tribute to our staff and to the procedures that we already had in placethat Ellis-Fermor & Negus was able to gain accreditation.

“Our membership of the Scheme ensures that clients can have totalconfidence in our ability to handle their conveyancing transactions. Our experienced and friendly team can handle their sale or purchasesmoothly and efficiently, dealing with any hiccups on the way.” On the Scheme in general, Robert commented

“This is an excellent development for the house buying process. Inwhat is already a crowded conveyancing market, the scheme willensure that the public, lenders and insurers will be able to easilyidentify CQS practices with the knowledge that the service offered willbe of a truly excellent standard.”

As is the case with many Home Instead SeniorCare franchise owners, Primo Sule haspersonal experience of the problems that arisewhen dealing with ageing family members. Finding the right help to support his 85 year

old mother at home proved to be a majorchallenge and when the help was found, theservice was poor and inconsistent.Following a similar experience when trying to

obtain help for his mother in law Primodecided to look in some detail at domiciliarycare provision, and after considering a numberof options he discovered Home Instead SeniorCare. "Once I looked at their approach to care and

the quality of Caregivers I knew I had foundthe right organisation".Home Instead Nottingham was established in

2010 and now delivers care to clients acrossNottinghamshire. Sarah Gell, a state registerednurse with 25 years experience in managingthe provision of care within the private andindependent sectors, joined the team duringJune 2010 and following an initial period asCommunity Liaison Manager took the role ofCare Manager.“Our aim is to provide care that meets the

requirements of people who come to us forhelp and to ensure that Caregivers aresuccessfully matched with clients in order togo beyond basic needs and enhance the qualityof life of those who use our services”.The Nottingham Home Instead Senior Care

Office is part of a global network of more than900 locally owned and operated offices.

Local CareHome Instead SeniorCare in Nottingham, whoprovide care to olderpeople, to allow them toremain independent intheir own homes, invitedmembers of the localcommunity to join themas part of Macmillan’s‘World’s Biggest

Coffee Morning’.

The Home Instead team, along with support from attendees, managed to raise over £110 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The coffee morning was held at the Methodist Church in Beeston, where a selection of funactivities were planned including, a ‘Guess how many Jelly Babies in the jar’ competition anda raffle, all prizes were donated by caregivers and other generous businesses. Disability Directalso attended on the day, giving older people and their families advice on services, such aspersonal budgeting and benefits.Owner of Home Instead, Primo Sule commented, “As a company who specialise in providing

care to people in their own homes, Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity which is very closeto our hearts. It is an illness that affects many of our older clients and we deeply appreciatethe work that Macmillan does in support specifically of older people. The coffee morning wasa fantastic way to inform the community about the local services available to them in theirarea, as well as bringing everyone together to raise money for such a deserving charity.”If you would like more information on Home Instead in Nottingham and the servicesthat it provides, call 0115 922 6116 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/nottingham

Charlotte will not have an easy life and there will be many frustrations and heartaches along the way, but for her parents, Alison and MichaelBlissett, Rainbows is one of the few places they can come to for support.

Charlotte’s mother, Alison comments: “Rainbows is absolutely fantastic. When I need someone to talk to, Rainbows is there. They care forCharlotte, but they also do so much more than that for our family and all the other families they look after. Christmas is a special time forchildren and I really hope people will be kind and donate to Rainbows at this time of festive giving.”

Where possible, tram works taking place on the main routes into Beeston Town Centre and Nottingham City Centre will be removed duringDecember to assist shoppers and retailers at this busy time of year.

In the New Year works will take place on Middle Street in Beeston Town Centre and at the junction of Queens Road and Station Road to improveroad capacity along the A6005, so that tram works can begin on Chilwell Road in the spring.

If you would like to find out more about tram project and the works involved in bringing the tram to this area, there are evening drop-ininformation sessions being held in Chilwell, at Eskdale Junior School, on Tuesday 4th December, and in Beeston, at the Town Hall, on Thursday13th December.

Elsewhere on the project, the first tram track foundations have now been laid at a new 1,300 space tram Park & Ride site which is being creatednear to the Bardills Island on the A52.

Some 120m of tram track foundations were laid using an innovative machine, which not only speeds up the process of laying tram tracks, butalso reduces the amount of noise and dust created in comparison to using traditional track-laying methods. One of only four machines in theworld will be used to lay approximately half of the track needed for the tram extension, which will also serve Wilford and Clifton in the south ofthe city.

Foundations for tram tracks will start to be laid next year, once utility services have been moved out of the way of the tram routes.

Geof Willer’s story - Back in ControlWhen I was diagnosed with my lung disease, it was like receiving a

death sentence and I ended up wanting to die to get it over with. I

was no longer in control of my life, I had to rely on others, i.e.

doctors, nurses and family members for the rest of my life…

”Wrong!”I was invited to join a self management program called the Expert

Patient Programme (EPP). I attended the first session reluctantly

and under pressure from a fellow friend and thought I wouldn’t be

attending after that first session because I couldn’t sit there

listening to others talk about their problems…”Wrong!”The program, which runs for six weeks became very enjoyable and

I know it may be difficult to believe, but even after my first day I

knew that my life was about to change. We were shown simple

exercises, some were physical but more importantly, we were

shown how to exercise our minds. No matter what our long term condition is, we all go through the

same symptom cycle where we suffer from fatigue, pain,

breathlessness and depression. The programme provides you with

ways of breaking this cycle. When you have a long term condition, all we need in our life is to

know how to self manage, i.e. think of something we are no longer

able to do, then change it for something we are able to do - it is

that simple. Attending the Expert Patient Programme has changed my life

completely, so much so it is difficult to put into words. At the end

of the program, I jumped at the invitation of being trained to

become a tutor. It would have been so easy to have gone home to

start the first day of the rest of my new life; however, because of

how I felt prior to attending the programme and the black hole I

was in, that alone made me want to go out and help prevent others

from being there.I developed three tools whilst on the Program: -• Being positive• Having the right attitude• Having a purpose in life, something to encourage meto get out of bed in a morning

I would not have missed this programme for anything (even a large

amount of money!), because I am now living a brilliant life. Why?

Because I am back in control of my own life.

breezegardeningReflections on what

December brings as thecold starts to bite: asmeteorologists keepwarning us of a hardwinter this year let’s be

on our guard and alsocontinue to enjoy our hobby

in the darkest days of the year.

It seems strangely contradictory but according to some experts therecord loss of Arctic sea ice this summer may mean a cold winter forthe UK. This region has been subjected to bad winters before aftersummers with very low sea ice, such as 2011 and 2007. Wild extremesthis winter seem to be a strong possibility if we base it on pastrecords.

Gardening always poses more challenges as a hobby in winter, notleast because it is simply harder to get things done on the whole:harder ground, adverse and therefore uncomfortable weather, lowlight levels.

It is not all doom and gloom though - after all it’s not as if weshouldn’t be used to it by now!

IndoorsWe have covered the use of artificial light before and it is a very

good way to ‘keep things going’ if you miss simply growingsomething - whether to eat or just display.

Obviously, we don’t want to use expensive electricity profligately sowe look at the light source first and for most hobbyists that meansplain ordinary fluorescent tube lights. These types of bulb are thecoolest burning and most energy efficient source. They also provideenough light to be a primary light source - literally replacing nearly allor entirely the natural daylight we get so plentifully during spring &summer. Grow indoor plants under these lights and you will seeresults providing you keep them undercover and reasonably warm -certainly not exposed to frost.

It’s possible to set up such lighting hung above the plants - aboutone foot away for a twenty five watt tube, slightly ore if higherwattage is used. Lightweight chains & hooks can be purchased frommost diy stores. Make sure you follow any safety advice in this regardand do consult an electrician on matters such as installation ofelectrical sockets if needed and the use of safety rcd/circuit breakers.

Time the artificial lights for twelve to sixteen hours per day and coincide the time the artificial light is on with the time of day theplant would get natural light. Most indoor plants also need ten totwelve hours of darkness each day as well to balance their daily cycle.

Do the usual tasks of watering, fertilising and repotting indoor

plants exactly as youwould if they weregrowing in natural light -which is the whole pointof it, keeping your hobbygoing in some form.

Once you have set up asmall growing frame (notunlike a cold frame withsides to keep everythingtogether and offer someshelter if in a coolerplace such as the garageor a potting shed) youcan have the lightsarranged on chains soyou adjust the height tothe growth of yourplants. A timer and someexperimentation willlead you to better resultseach crop (whichever plant type you decide on e.g Basil, or otherherbs). It really is about learning and having fun at the same time andneed not be on a large scale - just one tube is a good starting pointand you can grow from seed to add to the sense of accomplishment.Imagine - your own fresh Winter Basil or Chives!

HarvestIf you have already been busy planting some food crops in time for a

winter harvest then now is the time to reap what yo have sown!Usually December means hard frosts and it's time to get those

cabbages and cauliflowers out of the ground. Sticking with thebrassicas, the Brussels sprouts should be starting - you are allowed toeat them on other days as well as Christmas day!

Task list for DecemberAs things start to get a bit battered it’s well worth keeping a check onthe things that can really cause you problems:• Sheds: check damage to roofing• Fence posts: any starting to wobble and weaken in the winds?• Lawn: try not to walk on frosty lawns as it can damage the blades• Spray fruit trees: Once the leaves have totally fallen, spray with awinter tree wash, (vegetable oil based). This cleans the branches andkills fungal spores and over-wintering insects and their eggs.• Ponds: Stop feeding fish. Clean and service pond pumps.• Our feathered friends: Put out feeders for the birds, as well as freshwater. (...continued from previous page)

• Watch out for frost: Keep an eye on plunging night temperatures and cover shrubs that arelikely to be damaged by frost with garden fleece or perhaps sacking.• Have a garden reshuffle: moving pots and planters closer to the house so you can enjoy thecolours and textures of the plants as you keep warm on the inside!.• Clean up ready for next year: once herbaceous perennials have finished flowering and dieback, remove and clean plant supports.

Back indoorsWith the nights now well and truly ‘drawn in’ houseplants require less feeding and watering.

Of course, as the temperature drops outside on goes the central heating and the temperaturein the house gets nice and toasty for you but a little too stuffy for your plants so make surethey don't dry out.Try to create an indoor garden - situate a moderate sized lined basket near a patio window

and get something growing in there. A good example are tomatoes, choose the‘indeterminate’ varieties which continue growing and producing indefinitely. Cherry andplum types work better than large slicing types. Limit the number of plants - it is atemptation, especially if you are growing plants from seed, and you get a lot of high qualityseedlings, to make your ‘mini garden’ overcrowded. Keep enough space, with good lightingfor every plant. Get rid of the weakest ones and trim the excessive growth when needed.

Why not try your hand at growing your own Avocado plant? If you save the pit from a veryripe avocado, wash it well of any traces of fruit and then dry it off for a few days.

After drying, the pit can be suspended in a glass of water and you should see root growthof about two inches. This can now be planted in a pot of soil and tended to as a houseplant.

It all adds a little spice to your hobby! So come on let’s try these simple indoor tips and see ifwe can’t beat the winter blues with our hobby!A Merry Christmas to all you learning gardeners out there - Enjoy!

TAKE ACTION NOWAND TAKE CONTROLIN 2013!Leading local Psychotherapist, MartinSmith PhD runs a well establishedprivate practice in the Long Eaton areawhich specialises in helping peopleovercome issues around stress, depression, anxiety and a variety ofother conditions and issues which canso often blight people’s lives.

Martin firmly believes that suchconditions do not have to rule and ruinlives; with effective therapy, individualscan take back control of their lives andmove on. New Year is often an ideal timeto take action, the problem is that many people take action alone and tryto solve their problems without vital support. With the right support, individual efforts, which are so often well

meaning can be greatly enhanced to the point where life changes can bemade, and the blight of anxiety, stress, depression and other relatedissues can be lifted.Trying to deal with issues like, anxiety, stress, depression and phobias on

your own is difficult and when things do not work the issue just getsworse for the person. Martin comments “People have often commentedthat coming to see me has made tackling issues so much easier and theystate it has been worth seeking outside professional help”If you feel ready to take action now and take control call Martin on07 973 410 010 or email: [email protected] to arrange anappointment, he is available for appointments at times to suit, including weekends and evenings.
