COTSWOLD PHEASANT & POULTRY CLUB

A Short History of The "Cotswold Pheasant & Poultry Club"

The Club was started in the 70's to bring together people that were interested in keepingPheasants & Poultry, so that they find new stock and learn about developments in the PoultryWorld. This then developed into an active group to hold meetings once a month and goingout to Shows & Fetes etc, to promote the keeping of Poultry and to show many of the oldbreeds that now are only kept by enthusiasts.

In this day and age of Hybrid Chicken it is great to see breeds like Old English Game orDorkings that have long been forgotten commercially. The Fancy Breeds such as Polands,Silkies, Faverolles and many more breeds make an attractive display. The Club do up to 12exhibitions a year.

We also hold Club shows including the main Members Show in January, Egg Show in Apriland a Box Show in November.

Monthly meetings cover a wide range of subjects with some that are not dealing with Poultryat all, but all held in a friendly atmosphere.

The monthly meetings are mostly held in The Annex of Cricklade Town Hall starting at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of the month.

If you would like details of the Club please get in contact with our:

COTSWOLD SHEEP

Gloucestershire is truly remarkable in having a breed from each of the three main agricultur-al species derived within it and all still in existence today. No other single county can makesuch a claim, yet all three breeds are classed as rare and these could have disappeared forever in recent times.

The Cotswold is claimed to date back to sheep introduced by the Romans who settled inGloucestershire during Roman times, Cirencester - Cicester - was the second largest town inBritain to London and the wool from the sheep provided warmth for those early colonisers.During most of Britain's history since then, the Cotswold sheep has played a major part in cre-ating the wool trade that made the county wealthy and famous. During the Middle Ages, woolwas the major industry in Britain and its wares were exported far and wide. Mill towns suchas Stroud and Wotton-under-Edge blossomed on the business built from the fibre from thissheep's back. Indeed the very term 'Cotswold' breaks down into 'cots' or animal shelters and'wold' meaning a hill and thus the Cotswolds were a place abundant in sheep shelters on thoserolling hills.

Only in modern times has man spurned the natural product from sheep in favour of inferiorman-made products derived from the oil industry. Just as we have heroes in the MissesDowdeswell and Mr Styles for Gloucester cattle and Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs respec-tively, so we must thank the Garne family from Aldsworth for preserving the Cotswold Lion,as the big sheep is nicknamed, for a new wave of supporters to build on and to bring to thepresent day in relative safety.

Again, whilst the commercial wool market is in the doldrums, there is a growing niche for thelong-staple wool of the Cotswold for hand spinners. The carcass is large-framed and will pro-duce good quality meat when well-finished which again enjoys premium prices in specialistmarkets.

The Cotswold Sheep Society, which jealously guards the success it has derived over the last30 years or so. After all, the Woolsack in the House of Lords upon which the Lord Chancellorpresides is filled with the wool of the Cotswold breed and the sheep, which named a wholeregion, is steeped in history.

1948 to fairly recent.

Saturday January 26th 2008 Eighth Dustbin Film Festival in Chipping Sodbury Town HallAn unpredictable look back in time typically 1930-1970. This was caught on 16mm films. Subjects

GLOUCESTERSHIRE OLD SPOTS PIG BREEDERS' CLUB

It is ironic today that the best known breed in the country - and probably the second most pop-ular today - was so recently threatened with extinction. In a similar fashion to the Gloucestercattle, the GOS pig came close to the brink during 1960s and 70's when 80% of the entire pop-ulation of around 120 sows was kept in one herd - that of the famous George Styles from nearBewdley in Worcestershire. Had that herd succumbed to an outbreak of a fatal disease or hadGeorge taken heed of the advice to switch to Large Whites or another, the Orchard Pig todaywould just be a memory.

Instead, in relative terms it is thriving; Gloucestershire Old Spots have enjoyed a renaissancebecause they are not fully appreciated for their commercial potential in the same niche mar-ket enjoyed by other rare breeds. Relatively easy to finish well for either pork or bacon, theyare hardy, docile and excellent milky dams that will keep producing good litters year afteryear. For smallholders and hobby farmers, they are the perfect solution and for larger scaleextensive producers, they offer much more than most breeds.

Traditionally, the GOS were kept in the small farms along the river Severn to forage on theorchards and consume the whey from the dairies, which they did most successfully. As suchthey are much more a farmer's pig than some fancier breeds and win not so much in the inter-breed competitions in the show ring, but back on the farm where their qualities really standout. Folklore says that the spots on the Old Spots are bruises from windfall fruit falling onthem in the orchard.

GLOUCESTER CATTLE

Known by many as the Old Gloucester, this handsome breed with its rich brown colouring, black face and upswept horns has never been a mainstream British breed. However, it hasexisted in its native corner around the environs of the river Severn for several centuries, pos-sibly much longer. Its most distinctive feature, which it shares with the Longhorn breedamong others, is the line-back or finch-back marking being a creamy-white line along the backand extending down the tail and the escutcheon to the underside. Without this, the animalisn't a Gloucester. The body colouring can cover many shades of brown to almost black in thebulls of the breed. Purists prefer the darker brown rather than the lighter shades seen in somecows.

In centuries past, almost all cattle were triple purpose being milked, put to the yolk and even-tually slaughtered for beef at the end of their working life. The last 150 years has seen morespecialisation with the establishment of dedicated dairy breeds and beef breeds which gradu-ally squeezed the old-fashioned dual purpose breeds, all of which have since been classified as'rare'. Yet for small farmers looking for specialist traits, the Old Gloucester can be a godsend.Whilst its milk productivity is relatively low, it has attributes in the size and distribution of thefat globules that make it specially useful to craft cheese makers. Those dairymen who addvalue to their produce by making their own cheese, butter etc, are now among the few show-ing a profit from their endeavours. With Single Gloucester cheese protected by a PDO classi-fication throughout the EU, farmers based in Gloucestershire willing to go down this route, could find a useful living to be had.

The beef from a well-finished Gloucester has high eating qualities increasingly sought after inthe developing niche market encouraged by a growing awareness that the mass market doesnot meet the expectations of many in the 21st century. This aspiration has been recentlyboosted by scientific evidence that the fat on grass-fed beef (and lamb) contains the beneficialfatty acid, Omega 3. This is the same substance found in oily fish, which has significant healthbenefits for the human heart and vascular system. The growing demand for such beef frompedigree cattle should give confidence to farmers looking for new directions.

It should be remembered that the Gloucester holds a special place in history for it was anexample of the breed - Blossom - that Edward Jenner used in his pioneering work at Berkeleyto develop the vaccination against smallpox.

The Gloucester remains the rarest English cattle bred but is in a much stronger position todaythan when the herd book was re-established in 1972. During much of the intervening period,Eric Freeman's Noent Herd - Neont being the spelling for Newent in the Domesday Book - hasbeen one of the largest and most successful in the country. Eric's Dispersed his herd in 2005with prices achieved breaking all breed records on a number of occasions. Voce Pullin, auc-tioneers who conducted the sale said they had never recorded so much interest in a herd ofcows and the sale day attendance was incredible.
