What is breast hypertrophy?

Also known as “macromastia” or “gigantomastia”

Abnormal enlargement/ extreme growth of breast tissue (10lbs per breast)

A bilateral, benign progressive enlargement of the human breasts

Is gigantomastia in young women during puberty

Is when an adolescent's breasts grow rapidly and achieve great weight soon

after the her first menstrual period

Also termed as “juvenile macromastia” “juvenile gigantomastia”

Assoc Sx: red, itchy lesions and pain in the breasts, excessive nipple growth

Some women experience breast growth at a constant rate for several years, but

rapidly develop exceeding normal growth.

Some experience minimal or negligible breast growth until sudden very rapid

growth occurs in a short period of time.

Why does this happen?

May be caused by:heightened sensitivity or to the female hormones prolactin, estrogen, and progesterone

Presence of unusually high quantity of these hormones in the bloodstream

• In severe cases, the breasts of women with this disorder can weigh in excess of 20 pounds (9.1 kg) each.

•The largest recorded weight was 67 pounds (30 kg) per breast.

Nursing Management Support & Understanding

Inform realistically that changing her physical appearance will reduce physical discomfort but changing her self-concept must come from within

Schedule annual CBE for adolescents

Tell mother that pregnancy and lactation are difficult times due to milk formation

Well – supportive bras

Encourage client to ventilate feelings
