Coping with breast cancer can be frightening

For women and men diagnosed with breast cancer, learning how to cope with the disease can be an emotional, frightening experience with more questions than answers.

When a cancer patient is first diagnosed, most likely they may experience fear, anxiety, and uncertainty in their lives. Their feelings are that this would never happen to them. Clearly, there will be changes in their daily lives and that they may need help to cope with the diagnosis. We feel that we have a great Breast Health Navigator team who can assist and guide them through the difficult times. We also want them to know that we are here to help and that they do not need to go through their diagnosis alone.

The Breast Health Navigator Program is free. It is funded, in part, by a yearly grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The team consists of a certified oncology nurse and a clinical oncology social worker. We assist women and men at various stages of breast cancer, whether they are recently diagnosed, currently living with breast cancer, or have a recurrence of the disease.

What does the Breast Health Navigator Team do?

• Supports breast cancer patients and their families in understanding and coping with the complex emotions that accompany a breast cancer diagnosis.

• Provides educational resources for the patient and family members to answer their questions and address their fears during the breast cancer experience.

• Facilitates physicians’ recommendations for patient care to help ensure patient understanding.

• Assesses patients’ educational, financial, social and other needs and refers to the appropriate sources of help.

• Advocates for the needs of breast cancer patients and their families.

The Breast Health Navigator Team can help

We listen to each patient and provide reassurance and resources. We will help find what you’re looking for and provide the support you need along your cancer journey. We can help you with what to expect when it comes to symptom management, chemotherapy, radiation and survivorship.
