Luke 19:1-10
1 He entered Jericho and was
passing through. 2And
behold, there was a man
named Zacchaeus. He was a
chief tax collector and was
rich.
Luke 19:1-10
3And he was seeking to see
who Jesus was, but on account
of the crowd he could not,
because he was small in
stature. 4So he ran on ahead
and climbed up into a
sycamore tree to see him, for
he was about to pass that way.
Luke 19:1-10
5And when Jesus came to the
place, he looked up and said
to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry
and come down, for I must
stay at your house today.”
Luke 19:1-10
6So he hurried and came
down and received him
joyfully. 7And when they saw
it, they all grumbled, “He has
gone in to be the guest of a
man who is a sinner.
Luke 19:1-10
8And Zacchaeus stood and
said to the Lord, “Behold,
Lord, the half of my goods I
give to the poor. And if I
have defrauded anyone of
anything, I restore
it fourfold.”
Luke 19:1-10
9And Jesus said to
him, “Today salvation has
come to this house, since he
also is a son of
Abraham. 10For the Son of
Man came to seek and to save
the lost.”

7 Lessons we can Learn from
Jesus’ Encounter with Zacchaeus
Kingdom Perspectives from the Gospel of Luke
• He entered Jericho and was passing through (1)
• And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today” (5)
Look for divine appointments in
distractions
LESSON #1
Look for divine appointments in
distractions
LESSON #1
• There was a big crowd in Jericho that day (3)
• Instead of concentrating on the crowd who followed him Jesus concentrated on the individual
Minister to the one person that you are being shown
LESSON #2
Susannah Wesley (1669-1742)
• Zacchaeus lived in shame. When he wanted to see Jesus, he had to do it apart from the crowd.
• But Jesus, went out of his way and didn’t allow Zacchaeus to live in his shame.
Reach out to those living in shame
LESSON #3
• Sinners and tax collectors were labels. They were social outcasts.
• But Jesus, didn’t worry about labels that society had imposed on Zacchaeus.
See people without the labels society has put on
them
LESSON #4
• The crowd didn’t care whether Zacchaeus was able to see Jesus.
• They desired to see Jesus and didn’t worry about helping Zacchaeus.
LESSON #5
Be sensitive to the needs of others
Be sensitive to the needs of others
KINGDOM LIVING PRINCIPLE #5
• When Zacchaeus decided to pay back what he had wrongfully taken, he decided to pay back fourfold.
• Voluntary restoration was one fifth value added to what was wrongfully taken (Numbers 5:6-7).
• Zacchaeus gave back fourfold. If a sheep was stolen, and you were convicted you had to pay four times the value of the sheep (Exodus 22:1). Zacchaeus paid back admitting his guilt and accepting punishment.
Make restoration your target, not simple pay
back
KINGDOM LIVING PRINCIPLE #6
• Jesus visited Zacchaeus’ home.
• It looks like other people also went into Zacchaeus’ home.
• Zacchaeus welcomed people to his most vulnerable place, where he had stored his ill-gotten riches.
• That was an important part of his restoration.
Be open and vulnerable and allow people to see
you up close
