Students Ride Free!

The BRCC Shuttle offers free transportation for students from Rockingham and Augusta Counties, as well as the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, and Waynesboro. The shuttle makes attending classes possible for students with no transportation, temperamental vehicles, or handicaps that prevent them from driving. A valid College ID card is all that is required to use the shuttles for free.

Shuttle ridership was up by 35 percent this January over the figures from January 2011, and with gas prices on the rise, it is anticipated that more students will utilize this service. For more route information, visit http://www.brcc.edu/services/shuttle/.

Another way to lessen the cost of getting to BRCC is by using the BRCC Zimride ridesharing network. BRCC Zimride (zimride.brcc.edu) helps students connect with classmates and friends who are traveling in the same direction at the same time, and they can offer or request rides.

Student Maria Murerwa has relied on the BRCC shuttle since her first day of classes more than two years ago, and rides everyday from her home in Harrisonburg. “I use the shuttle because I don’t have any other means of transportation, and plus, the shuttle is free and reliable,” said the Rwandan native.

BRCC graduate D.J. Diehl had many options to consider after earning his degree here. He could have “hit the working world at full speed” with his associate’s degree, but he was persuaded to continue his education by transferring to Old Dominion. “Since Blue Ridge offers satellite courses from Old Dominion, I was able to meet with some of the ODU faculty without actually traveling to the school. The transfer process was a breeze, and two years later, I was graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from ODU,” D.J. says.

If a four-year degree is your ultimate educational goal, BRCC is a great place to get started. Nearly all four-year colleges and universities in Virginia, as well as some private institutions in the state, have transfer agreements with BRCC. The Advanced Technology Center at BRCC is a state-of-the-art facility that is home to the College’s manufacturing engineering technology, electronics, engineering, physics, mathematics, and automated manufacturing programs. There are labs for electronics, computer networking, physics, manufacturing engineering, and computer aided drafting, as well as two standard classrooms. The Center is the College’s first LEED-certified green building.

From the smart boards to the labs, this building has the latest and greatest to prepare you for exciting careers in today’s workforce!

L ike far too many Valley residents, Terry Smith was laid off when the economy tanked several years ago. At first, he wasn’t too concerned, “I had worked for 14 years and was making a good living. I thought I’d be able to find another job,” he explained. But what he found was that even with his years of management and supervision experience, employers wanted a degree beyond high school. So at 47 years old, the Raphine resident decided to go back to school. “I immediately thought about Blue Ridge. The College has a good reputation, and offered the program I wanted,” he said.

“I was intimidated coming in,” Terry stated—math, in particular, was a challenge. But Terry found the counselors and faculty at BRCC were there to assist him—whether it be registering for classes or getting extra instruction after class. He also discovered that his maturity and life experiences helped him through the early challenges, and that it didn’t take long to settle into the college routine.

Terry works Friday-Sunday, three 12-hour days, then has the rest of the week to focus on school and family. The father of two teenagers, he finds it amusing when he and his kids can discuss schoolwork together. “My son and I will both be in college at the same time,” he added. He’s also built friendships with several of his mechanical design classmates that he says, “will last a lifetime.” He’s worked like gangbusters to get through the program and will finish in six semesters.

Terry will graduate this spring with an associate’s degree in mechanical design technology and a career studies certificate in computer aided drafting (CAD). He plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree and take additional classes at BRCC in architecture.

B lue Ridge accounting and business management graduate Josh Shifflett credits his BRCC degree with landing him his current job. “Without BRCC, I would have never been considered for the job I have today,” said Josh. He added, “BRCC gave me the necessary skills to succeed.”

The Spotswood High School graduate’s mother was a BRCC graduate, so he was familiar with Blue Ridge from the get-go. “She loved it and had nothing but good things to say about it, and encouraged me to go there.” He added

He now works for a clinical research organization in Charlottesville. “We are contracted out by big pharmaceutical and biotech companies to oversee the clinical research of trial medications,” he explained. “I am a supervisor of a group of individuals, overseeing the budgets negotiated between the companies and the doctors or sites.”

can get an associate degree, or a certificate, or transfer to a four-year school and be well on your way to an art degree. Or just hone your photography skills with a couple of classes. It’s really up to each person to explore your passion.”

Unlike many four-year schools, most art classes here have no prerequisites and students do not have to be enrolled in a degree program to take classes like photography. Using the latest equipment like Canon XA-10 video

cameras, Canon Rebel T3 still cameras and Adobe Creative Suite software, students can sharpen their skills before investing in expensive equipment of their own.

Blake Cale, a 20-year-old Harrisonburg resident, aspires to transfer to the Savannah College of Art and Design and believes he’s gotten

a firm foundation at BRCC to do well there. “I wanted to broaden my knowledge in different media, and I’ve been able to do that,” he says. “I’ve always been interested in drawing and painting, but after taking graphic design classes, I think that is my niche.”

Collaborative projects, like producing the BRCC literary magazine 540, keep students engaged and give them résumé-building knowledge. “They get a real world publishing experience, from soliciting manuscripts and artwork, to design, to working with a printer, and then promoting it once it’s published,” Wyrick says.

Arts classes at BRCC can help stimulate the right side of your brain, or possibly lead to something very practical: a job! “In the job market today, you have to be nimble,” Wyrick says. “Our students are exposed to a variety of courses taught by professionals with real world experience to help them become multi-talented designers and photographers.”

Blue Ridge Community College’s Fine Arts Center offers fine and performing arts opportunities for students and community alike. The 23,500 square-foot building includes art and kinetic galleries, the Black Box Theatre, art and ceramics studios, computer lab, classrooms, and faculty offices. Since opening in fall 2007, the Fine Arts Center has logged more than 12,000 visitors to its events and exhibits.

The Fine Arts Center gallery hosts several exhibits each season, including exhibits such as a Shenandoah Valley Art Center Juried Members Show, works by Leslie Banta, a Mary Baldwin College Faculty Group Show, and the always-popular BRCC Student ArtWorks. The kinetic gallery has featured the work of Continuing Education pottery students, a collection of contemporary handmade marbles, and a Women’s History Month display of famous women’s portraits by the BRCC Computer Graphics class. If you have a passion for airplanes, cars, or trucks, BRCC offers courses to prepare you for exciting careers in the aviation, automotive, or commercial truck driving industries.

AviationBRCC provides a one-year aviation maintenance

technician (AMT) program and offers both airframe and powerplant certificates, as well as an A.A.S. degree in aviation maintenance. Most students elect the one-year option and can complete both certificate programs in one calendar year. Classes are in session eight hours per day, five days per week. Students also have the option of attending four hours per day over a two-year period. The advantage of this second option is an internship opportunity that BRCC has initiated with Dynamic Aviation, Inc.

“I really appreciate the flexibility of the program to fit different schedules and the challenge on all levels of learning,” said student Chris Burkholder.

BRCC plans to offer distance education classes in aviation maintenance, including applied technical mathematics, aircraft drawing, federal aviation regulations, and basic electricity. Additionally, BRCC offers light sport repairman maintenance training that leads to qualification for an FAA Repairman Certificate with Light Sport Maintenance Airplane rating.

“We’ve worked hard to make BRCC a unique aviation experience,” says Fred D. Dyen, associate professor. “Our graduates attend class right at the airport and are exposed to a strict attendance policy that simulates industry working conditions. In fact, one of the advantages, according to employers is that our graduates possess a strong work ethic.”

Truck DrivingIf you’re looking for a challenging job that offers an excellent

combination of freedom and responsibility, tractor-trailer driving may be the right choice for you. The demand for well-trained, skilled drivers continues to increase. BRCC can get you on the road to success with commercial driver’s license (CDL) courses.

We offer CDL Class A training for 16 college credits; a five-week, 12-credit CDL Class A option; or choose the customized CDL Class A option for training on a part-time, flexible basis. All courses provide the knowledge and skills necessary for employment as licensed Class A commercial tractor trailer drivers, as well as an understanding of transportation’s importance in society, an overview of carrier operations, and knowledge of current business strategies including public policy and transportation regulations.

In addition, we offer CDL Class B training in a four-day program, or you can get a Class B license for bus driving in just five days.

As a mechanic for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, Lynchburg resident Bernard Kocis needed to get his CDL B license training to be able to drive the team’s new 28-foot straight truck. He turned to Blue Ridge Community College for coursework that would fit into his demanding schedule.

“BRCC was the only place in Virginia that offered a custom course for a Class B CDL,” said Bernard. “This is very important given my travel schedule and the demands placed on me professionally.”

Wings or Wheels?

A life-long love of NASCAR and a passion for cars lead Ryan Basile to the automotive technology program at BRCC.

While he found the program demanding, and worked full-time while taking classes, Ryan says it was worth the effort. After working for Price Kia in Charlottesville as an automotive technician for six years, Ryan was recently promoted to director of parts and service. “I owe a lot to BRCC and their automotive program. Without them, I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be in the position that I’m in right now. I know I wouldn’t have the knowledge about vehicles and diagnosing them, and although I’m not hands on with the vehicles anymore, I still use this knowledge to help our technicians and our customers,” Ryan explained.

Ryan still keeps up with the faculty and staff from the BRCC program, coming back to the College to visit and check out the latest material they’re teaching. “They are professional, motivated, and their knowledge about cars goes beyond my comprehension. It’s been almost 10 years since I graduated and I’m still trying to keep up with those guys,” he stated.

“It is always refreshing to have students who ask challenging questions and have a desire to learn technical information that’s not in the textbook, and Ryan was one of those students,” said Tom Mayer, professor of automotive analysis and repair. He continued, “Ryan’s positive attitude along with a strong work ethic made him a great automotive student, and I am sure it has contributed to his career success.”

The Automotive Analysis and Repair program at BRCC is Master Certified in all eight Automotive areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and has received the Award for Excellence in Post-Secondary Vocational Education from the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers of the U.S. and the American Vocational Association.

Library Assistant Martha Livick’s three children and her daughter-in-law all graduated from Blue Ridge with transfer degrees. The ease of the financial aid process and the availability of scholarships were deciding factors in the family’s choice.

“It was affordable for us to go to Blue Ridge because of the financial aid and scholarships,” Livick says. “It’s so easy. You just fill out one form and they do all the rest.
