A GREAT HAIR DAY by Elaine Morrison Brazilians say você pode ter cabelos lindos neste verão. Translated – you can have beautiful hair this summer. The Brazilian Blowout is the hottest trend for gorgeous and manageable hair and thanks to the celebrity status it’s enjoyed in its origin of California, a South Surrey salon is trained and ready to go. Aru Spa stylist Stephanie Herringer did a demonstration for us, and the results were not only impressive, but the desire to have the 90-minute treatment became a little contagious among the women watching. The Brazilian Blowout is a line of products that, when set with a 400˙ flat iron (if your hair is damaged a lower heat will be used), the hair will keep its shape and volume for up to 12 weeks. The treatment actually improves the hair’s condition by fortifying each strand with essential amino acids. It’s great on top of a relaxer, but it’s recommended you wait at least two weeks to colour your hair after the treatment. Here’s how the Brazilian Blowout works: First step is shampooing the hair, and take note, if you’re using non-professional hair products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, that will cause the treatment to break down and shorten its life expectancy considerably. Next, the hair is slightly dried and brushed out. Then comes the application of the Brazilian Blowout conditioning product, and the hair is dried into its final style and enhanced with volume. The hair is then flat-ironed to seal the product and smooth down the hair cuticle and it’s back to the sink to wash it all out with professional sodium lauryl sulfate-free hair products. Now comes the magic. All you have to do is rough dry your hair, which means no finicking over volume, no blow drying your hair upside down to achieve volume...and it just falls back into the original high volume style set in place by the professional...which you’ll be able to do effortlessly every day. “It takes a good 40 minutes for me to blow dry and flat iron my hair every morning,” said 23-year-old Meagan Campbell, our model for the demonstration. “That time will be cut in half and it makes mornings a lot easier,” said Herringer. “There’s not going to be a woman out there who doesn’t like this.” “Sure makes a difference,” said Campbell as she admired the rear view of her finished hair with a hand mirror. Aru Spa owner Aaron Oram said, and had one lady tell him, “It changed my life”. “It just becomes a wash and wear style,” he said. Stylists have to be trained prior to performing the procedure, and excessive swimming in salt water isn’t recommended as it will slightly compromise the treatment, however, the BB is ideal for women of all race, age and hair types. It’s especially dramatic for women with processed, damaged, frizzy or naturally curly hair. It calms the frizz, keeps the natural wave of naturally curly hair, and creates a sleek, shiny finish. The treatment lasts up to 12 weeks if the Acai After-Care Maintenance product is used. And because the BB is a cumulative treatment. The more you receive it, the healthier the hair will be and the longer the result lasts. 300-350 for the treatment. Aru charges $350 but also includes a $50 gift certificate for home care regime products. As a precaution, the treatment is not recommended for pregnant or breast feeding clients, as no clinical tests have been performed to date.
