“Orchestral Lunacy was sheer pleasure! Thanks to the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and to Tomáš Kubínek for an evening of old-fashioned entertainment. Delightful, surprising, hilarious, silly, warm, impressive...the list goes on. Thanks to Lakewood Cultural Center for bringing in this fantastic performance. We will be back!”

Fall/Winter 2015 ExhibitsLAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTERNorth and Mezzanine GalleriesJourneys: Pastel Society of Colorado2015 Signature Members' Show

The signature members of the Pastel Society of Colorado were challenged to create a new body of work about a personal visual journey. Each artist's painting will be exhibited with a narrative explaining their journey. “My sometimes twisty, sometimes smooth artistic journey is parallel with life in general as we humans work to make something with

meaning and in the end, find our personal road is solitary no matter how many others surround us.” - Bev LeeOctober 9-November 22Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, October 9 See page 22 for a special pastel workshop with Ken Elliott!

North GalleryFrom Fire: Contemporary works in clay

The exhibit celebrates the artistic and fine pottery work from the arts program instructors at the Washington Heights Arts Center in Lakewood. Works include traditional firings and techniques obtained through raku, pit firing, soda kiln firings and a wood kiln. The artists use these techniques to transform clay into stunning contemporary works of art. December 3-January 10Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, December 4

Mezzanine GalleryAnimal Wisdom

Native American tribes believe that animals can teach us many things and that often one specific animal is our teacher, guide or totem. This interactive exhibit is accompanied by QR codes that can be scanned with a

smartphone to learn about the unique wisdom each animal offers. Simultaneously portraits of individual animals and artistic visions, the photographs open the viewer to new ways of seeing the world and gathering insights offered by animals. The exhibit combines the talents, stunning wildlife images and cutting-edge vision of three renowned wildlife photographers: William Eager, Vic Schendel and Barbara von Hoffmann. December 3-January 10Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, December 4

LAKEWOOD CIVIC CENTER SOUTHJames J. Richey GalleryThreads by Roxanne Rossi “Hanging by a thread” suggests

something risky, precarious and unpredictable, a feeling of being unsettled. So does the start of new work feel, until the time it becomes a cohesive concept. This idea of a thread, thin yet strong, became the connecting concept,

the sequence of time, the material imagery and the visual language. Using the cast handmade paper’s white expanse, the sewn lines create a dynamic interplay with the delicate and intricate lines. October 9-November 20Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, October 9

Of the Earth“The earth does not need us. We need the earth.” This quote recently stopped two artists in their tracks and launched them in a new artistic direction. For clay artist Gail Frasier and painter Lynne Milliken, a long connection with the natural world suddenly took on new meaning. The result of their collaboration is “Of the Earth,” an interpretation of the gifts this earth bestows on humankind. December 3-January 8Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, December 4

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s timeless character Sherlock Holmes has experienced a recent surge in cultural popularity, with several blockbuster movies, two successful television shows, traveling theater productions and one fantastic interactive exhibit. Holmes appealed to readers in the late 1800s because he is pragmatic, clever and rooted in Victorian London, unlike other Doyle characters who are dreamy, romantic and living in an idealized past that was swiftly fading from view. Holmes’ appeal today is based on his uncanny ability to make connections from clues virtually invisible to the untrained eye. He’s brilliant, he’s crass, he’s virtually clairvoyant—and audiences love it!

The Denver metro area is lucky to have two great Sherlock experiences arriving this year. Denver Museum of Nature & Science is hosting The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, where guests step into Arthur Conan Doyle’s Victorian London and work beside the legendary Holmes to tackle a baffling case. Investigate a crime scene and emboss, stamp, rub and draw your observations to discover the truths behind the mystery. Experiment with ballistics, blood splatter and other physical evidence before viewing props, costumes and more from the film and television shows. The exhibit runs from October 23, 2015 to January 31, 2016. On November 21 the mystery goes live at Lakewood Cultural Center as Aquila Theatre presents a two-show run of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Follow along as the clever Holmes navigates the twisted web of London’s crime world. This action-packed show will surely sell out fast.

Don’t miss the adventure this fall at the museum’s International Exhibit of Sherlock Holmes and Aquila Theatre’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes at Lakewood Cultural Center. More info at dmns.org and Lakewood.org/LCCPresents.

To a great mind, nothing is little.

FIRST TRACKS: SKI AND SNOWBOARD DESIGN,THEN AND NOWSeptember 24, 2015-February 27, 2016 Exhibit Open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday-SaturdayThe first tracks made by flat wooden skis occurred thousands of years ago. Over the past decades, ski use has changed immensely from a mode of travel and exploration to a form of entertainment and competition. With this transformation, graphic designs on skis and snowboards have gained a place of importance alongside technological advancements. The fashions and graphics chosen by a manufacturer or an individual skier represent singular styles as well as the desire to engage with nature as a community. Visit First Tracks to learn about the birth of snowboarding, experience ski culture on film and lose yourself in the inspiring designs of several local snow sports companies.Lakewood Heritage CenterLakewood.org/Exhibits

Originally called Golden Road because it connected miners from the east with the riches of the West, Colfax Avenue was named for Schuyler Colfax, Indiana congressman, Speaker of the House of Representatives and vice president under Ulysses S. Grant. The avenue, part of the transcontinental U.S. Highway 40, stretches 26.5 miles through Aurora, Denver, Lakewood and Golden, offering travelers a glimpse back in time and a peek at the future. The rising trend of automobile travel in the 1950s ushered in decades of neon lights and attractions on Colfax. Hotels, motels, fine dining and dancing establishments sprang up along the thoroughfare, lending a main street feel in the towns it traversed.

It was the completion of Interstate 70 that began the slow decline of Colfax, shuttering businesses and ushering in a multiple-decade reputation for being a gritty place riddled with crime. In recent years, both West and East Colfax have enjoyed a resurgence in activity, with community activists working to revive the avenue without the loss of its quirky reputation. West Colfax in Lakewood is now home to a thriving art community, housing 40West Arts District, Lakewood Arts Council, The Edge Theatre and Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design.
