Grab your tutu and tap shoes,

the Lakewood dance studio is moving!

OPENING JANUARY 2014!

C ontinuing its long history of youth and adult dance classes, Lakewood Heritage, Culture & the Arts is excited to host dance students in the new studio at Lakewood Cultural Center, opening January 2014. Arts Programming Curator Lorene Joos had this to say about the new space: “We’re

excited to welcome the new studio to the Cultural Center in our continuing efforts to elevate the dance experience for our students, and connecting that experience to a venue that allows them to experience the full possibility of a dance career is a real plus. Additionally, we’re happy LCC provides a space that is more comfortable for parents who wait during class, offering them the opportunity to view the art galleries or en-joy a cup of coffee and free Wi-Fi.”  Lakewood Cultural Center has world-class dance companies performing on its stage and with the proximity to the new studio, we hope to inspire student dancers and encourage a passion for the arts.

The thrice-yearly Heritage, Culture & the Arts Classes brochure has undergone an exciting redesign! The new look and feel, designed and produced by Kim Palmer of Lakewood’s Community Resources Department, took inspiration from the best art museum and school brochures in the U.S. When asked about the motivation behind her yearlong project, Kim said, “It had been 10 years since our last redesign, so we wanted to create something with a fresh and modern look that would appeal to new artists in the area, as well as provide an accurate visual representation of our class offerings.”

New and exciting classes have been added to the already strong schedule of offerings such as Kumihimo Braid Making, Raku Firing and Drawing Hands workshop. Pick up a copy of the new Classes brochure at Lakewood Cultural Center, Lakewood Heritage Center or Washington Heights Arts Center, and begin your artistic journey today!

Have the new classes brochure mailed to your home by emailing HCA @Lakewood.org

What do train models, video game memorabilia and antique cars have in common? These items, along with many other ordinary or quirky items, become collectables. Through this nostalgic display, Lakewood Heritage Center has set out to discover not only what people accumulate but why they save.

Visit Lakewood Heritage Center from February 21 to August 30 to view these collections and learn how you can begin a collection of your own.

Lakewood Heritage CenterCollectors Then & Now

Describe your collection in a few sentences:The world’s largest collection of video game memorabilia. A collection featuring mostly Nintendo but also several other company’s characters and products.

How long have you been collecting?About 13 years. Has your collection been on display before? The whole collection has only ever been on display in my house, but a portion of the collection was on loan to the Aurora History Museum for a short time in its history of gaming exhibit. What was the first item in your collection?A “Mario holding Mushroom” mini figurine from Applause. What is your most prized item?So difficult to answer. I’d have to say the collection itself as a whole at this point. Notables include several prototype figures, two Mario bronze “Oscars,” a Super Mario Bros. 3 box signed by Shigeru Miyamoto (creator), and a 4-foot tall Mario.

Are there any particular items you’re still on the hunt for?Always. I’m still attempting to complete a few sets here and there. The one that gnaws at me is one figure from the Super Mario Land finger puppet set. There are also a few Zelda items that I’ll probably never have due to its wild popularity, driving the price out of my range.

Collector Spotlight: John ManionJohn Manion is a retired Army infantry officer who has traveled, photographed and modeled railroads most of his life. Since being diagnosed with diabetes because of his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam, John has become an avid long-distance walker. The high school student who used to cross Washington Park twice daily to get to South High School in the 1960s is now an adult who walks more than 10 miles a day multiple days a week. His biggest accomplishment was this past June when he covered more than a marathon’s distance, 27.5 miles, in a single day.

In addition to long-distance walking, John is a model railroad collector, preferring equipment of the Denver & Rio Grande Western, as he and his family have lived in Denver since 1952.

He is at work modeling all of the diesels of the D&RGW from 1941 to 1990, only lacking a couple (which he plans to custom fabricate) for which models have not been made. The first item in

his collection is a brass model of D&RGW No. 50, a narrow gauge diesel now at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Many of John’s models have been displayed at train shows in Colorado and Utah, as he is the exhibit coordinator for the Rio Grande Modeling & Historical Society. He has also written a series of articles on the history and modeling of D&RGW diesels to be published in the quarterly magazine, The Prospector. With over 300 railroad

books and 50 years of collecting experience and knowledge, John hasn’t come across a question he couldn’t answer about D&RGW diesels.

BRAVO: How would you describe your shows to someone who hasn’t yet seen you live?

GGGrandd D: Our show is very dynamic! Although a big part of our show is songs, we also have step dancing along with fi ddle music. All our songs and instrumentals revolve around the Southwestern Acadian culture so it’s very unique; we try to bring the crowd on a journey of discovery into our world.

BRAVO: Does one person do the majority of the songwriting, or is it a collaboration?

GGGrandd D: Daniel (LeBlanc) and I (Briand Melanson) have always come up with the instrumentals, and we collaborate with a songwriter from our town, Michel Thibault, who has been working with us since the band’s start in 1998.

BRAVO: What are the common themes or topics in your music?

GGGrandd D: We touch a variety of topics and themes revolving around the Acadian culture. We’ll sing songs about our history and the struggles the Acadians had to go through to survive and then we’ll sing a song about the town gossipers (we have a lot of those...haha!), and then a love song, then an Acadian song sung in a rap style.

BRAVO: What artist/band do you all currently love?

GGGrandd D: Our tastes differ a bit. We like other maritime bands like Great Big Sea and Rankin Family. Some of us are into bluegrass, like Allison Krauss, Mark O’Connor and Chris Thile. We like the new stuff that’s coming out on Top 40 too, and, of course, classic bands like Led Zeppelin, The Band and Queen.

BRAVO: What do you fi nd most challenging about live performances?

GGGrandd D: The traveling can be challenging and tiring at times and setting up the stage. The best part is defi nitely those 90 minutes on stage!

BRAVO: What is the most unusual venue you have played?

GGGrandd D: We played a correctional center in Vermont!

BRAVO: What feedback do you most often hear about your music?

GGGrandd D: We hear that we really energize people. People tend to feed off our stage energy, which in return energizes us more!

The City of Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts (HCA) Division is committed to providing arts and culture resources to the surrounding area, as well as celebrating

our history as a community. In recent years, HCA staff has taken on several initiatives to keep the facilities and events as sustainable as possible for enjoyment by future generations.

Preserving our past through greening our future

The Estes Motel

Historic Preservation and the Green Building Movement - A

Partnership for the Future Over the last 20 years the green building movement has increasingly played a larger role in the reuse, adaptation and rehabilitation of historic buildings. Environmental sustainability is now as important for the renovation of historic buildings as it is for new construction. Further, sustainability is now at the forefront of thinking when architects and designers are in the planning process of giving new life to an older structure. In projects all over the state of Colorado, preservationists are demonstrating how green building is compatible with the practices of historic preservation.

Last year, residents were involved in creating the City’s first Historic Preservation Plan. Lakewood’s plan for historic preservation also includes a number of goals related to sustainability. For instance, Lakewood seeks to promote adaptive reuse of historic properties, highlight preservation projects for their sustainable benefits and promote economic sustainability through historic preservation. Such policies are further strengthened by a number of specific action plans related to green preservation practices such as a call for the integration of sustainability principles into all new preservation documents and for a streamlining of the review process

for energy efficient retrofits of locally designated historic properties. A Historic Preservation Commission was recently established consisting of five members appointed by the Lakewood City Council. The commission meets monthly as needed and is responsible for drafting bylaws, operating policies and other rules of procedure, preparing an annual report for the City Council and attending yearly educational sessions surrounding historic preservation. The commission is responsible for conducting hearings on applications for landmark designation and making recommendations to City Council. The commission also conducts alteration certificate review and applications for the relocation of designated structures.

It’s looking “greener” in Lakewood! The staff and volunteers at the Lakewood Heritage Center turn their food, coffee and other organic waste into compost for use in the sustainable garden.

The gardens at the Lakewood Heritage Center are all organic and pesticide free.

The volunteers and staff at this year’s Cider Days festival diverted 760 pounds of recyclables away from the landfill. That’s the equivalent of 26,483 water bottles!

Motion detectors were installed in all of the Lakewood Heritage Center galleries, greatly reducing the electricity used in those spaces. That’s why some of the galleries are dark when you first walk in!

LED lights were installed in the 20th Century Emporium to replace the old incandescents.

All of the backstage areas at Lakewood Cultural Center operate on motion sensor lights, and all dressing rooms are oufitted with CFL light bulbs. Lakewood Cultural Center has been using compostable coffee cups for five years.

Lakewood Cultural Center offers single-stream recycling receptacles during all performances, meetings and events.

5 pounds firm baking apples (approx. 8 cups)

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

3 tablespoons salted butter

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

½ cup brown sugar

½ cup white sugar4 tablespoons flour

2 ¼ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

½ teaspoon vanilla

Dash of saltDouble pie crust (choice of recipe)

Peel, core and slice apples into ½ inch slices

and toss in lemon juice. Put 1 ½ tablespoons

each salted and unsalted butter in a frying

pan with half of the apples and the brown

sugar, cook until syrupy, pour onto sheet to

cool. Cook the other half of the apples with

the rest of the butters and the white sugar

until syrupy. Pour the last batch of apples on

a sheet to cool. Then place all of the apples in

a large bowl and sprinkle with flour, pumpkin

pie spice, vanilla and a dash of salt, stir gently.

Pour apples into bottom of pie crust then

place second crust on top and seal. If crust

is not a cut out or lattice design, cut 5 or 6

slits in the top to release steam while cooking.

Refrigerate the pie for 30 minutes or until firm.

Place on rack in the lower third of the oven

and preheat to 350 degrees. Place pie on a

baking sheet and bake for 60 to 70 minutes.

You may wrap the edges of your pie with foil

to prevent over baking. After pie is baked,

transfer to a wire rack and let cool for

about an hour before serving.

Carmon Slater: A Retrospective“The real, but seemingly abstract relationship between the macroscopic and microscopic world is a constant force in my work. I am concerned about the interrelationships of all organisms in their environment and the importance of each within the context of that environment. In grappling with these issues in my work, I utilize both old and new artistic techniques, approaching with a contemporary twist. There is an integration of texture, color, pattern, form and line quality, which creates visual language and metaphor.” - Artist StatementJanuary 24 – March 30Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, January 24

Spirit of Lakewood GalleryLakewood Heritage Center’s permanent gallery highlights significant events throughout the 20th century, starting with May Bonfils-Stanton’s ownership of farmland, which later became city municipal buildings as well as the Villa Italia and Belmar shopping centers. The local artifacts immerse visitors in a time when people drove Ford Model T’s, used switchboards to call friends, and first started watching color TV. Permanent Ongoing Installation

Lakewood Looks Back Belmar Mansion was built by May Bonfils Berryman in 1937 at the intersection of what is now Wadsworth Boulevard and Ohio Avenue in Lakewood. Costing $1 million to construct at the height of the Great Depression, the house was modeled after the Petit Trianon, Marie Antoinette’s country house near Versailles, France. May named the estate “Belmar” after her mother’s name, Belle and her Catholic namesake, Mary. One of the collaborators on the design of Villa Italia, Charles Stanton, May’s second husband and an architect, helped manage their hobby farm of Suffolk sheep and Black Angus cattle.

When May Bonfils Stanton passed away in 1962, Belmar was willed to the Catholic Archdiocese, with the stipulation that it be torn down if it could not be used. Despite objections from the community, the mansion was demolished in 1970. The main wrought iron gates, marble boathouse, and several outbuildings remain. The five farm outbuildings are part of what is now the Lakewood Heritage Center and were recently placed on the State Historic Register.
